The Weather

I think we hit the “winter” low point the past two weeks, and now we are on the upswing. Was 15C and beautiful here yesterday, and 13C today. I better get at some of the yard/garden work and exterior house work before it starts getting much warmer.

I started the day with -13C and 4 inches of snow on the 1800 square foot driveway. I used the leaf blower to redistribute a lot of it before the sun came out and turned it all into a giant slushie. After about an hour with the cheapie single stage snow thrower I had moved a bunch more. After a break for lunch, I had to resort to the good old shovel. Now I have a clear driveway, and it has warmed up to -11C but the wind is now relentless. No more outside time today.......if I can help it.

He was probably still in flip flops!
Not today. I have been seen shoveling snow in flip flops almost every year. The cheapie single stage snow thrower is like a giant vacuum cleaner with a chute where the bag goes and a beater bar that has a big flap made out of the same material that tires are made from, with a three HP gasoline engine to spin it. It only works on hard surfaces like concrete or asphalt. The big drawback is that any ice on the surface under the snow will be fractured and thrown in all directions including under the back edge right at your feet. I learned that heavy boots are needed to run that thing. The first picture was taken before I learned that. It likes to throw rocks and large ice chunks too. You must always keep the chute pointed away from cars and windows.....and most people. The wind can deliver a face full of snow once it has been tossed into the air too.

@George -- you must remember to NOT wear shorts in this type of weather!
My usual around the house garment is still just a pair of shorts. Once winter comes that changes to a pair of jeans. The outdoor temp, wind speed and precipitation governs what additional clothing is needed outdoors. Depending on my activity level, jeans and flip flops on a calm yet cold day are all that are needed. I have shoveled my entire driveway in jeans and flip flops several times in the 10 years we have lived here. There have also been days like today where a lot more clothing is needed.

Sounds like a good plan! What kind of stuff are you going for in the vegetable garden?
Still hoping for winter here...
For the first crop, I will likely try as many different things as I can, to see what does well in our soil and growing conditions. I’d like to target things that are typically more expensive to buy (potatoes, squash, most fruits) or more difficult to find (beets, parsnips, turnips). I planted a lemon tree, a kiwi tree, a mulberry bush and a chestnut tree last fall, and I have two pear trees and a fig tree that need to be planted ASAP. We have a yuzu tree and a couple of plum trees on the property already. I will rent a roto-tiller soon and prepare the main vegetable plot, which is about 8m x 20m, with room to expand.

Hope you get the winter you are wishing for! I used to enjoy winter very much, but I don’t miss it.

Damn, Damn ,Damn. I have not set up proper dusk extraction in the indoor winter shop as far as routing goes. So I had to go to the carport / outside shop to route. Only a very few passes on the router table so why not.

For safety's sake I could not wear gloves during tool usage.
I got really lucky that there is no wind. I wonder if I did this as an expression of machismo or stupidity.

The finest seat, blue Dow SM, printing facing down of course.
It's cold here too, polar vortex for all. Something Canada does well at. Good for making ice, just maybe Lake Simcoe will freeze over this year for white/trout, hut op's, fishing finatics. We buy the haddock at Sobey grocers instead 🙂 but it's not as fresh as perch from the lake. The ferry to georgina island is still plugging through. We'll see if I have to bring the beer/water in from the mud room.
The new carrier 40kBTU propane furnace is holding up, on our 3rd fill up of the 420l tank we have, 10Sept= 360l, 10Dec=238l, 17jan=270l.
That's $262.57CDN for 270l, almost a $1/l for us sad sack carbon tax folks. called for prop., they were here in less than two hours on a Friday afternoon. Now that's service. Last year it was like $1300 to fill the oil tank. looks like carbon taxes are now becoming out of fashion 🙂 time will tell
