I was holding 66 in the house till it hit 20F outside and the emergency heat strip kicked in. Pellet stove going and it was 61F in the house when I woke up and -2F outside (-17C). Wind Chill was supposed to have been -15F (-26C) last night.
Dog jumped back in my bed when I told him I was leaving for work.
Car did not warm up in the 9 mile drive to work.

It's time to go to work, 5:45am and it's going to be a foggy day with a high of 7ºC, up from the 4º right now.
It's currently 2 F (-16 C) here and got down to -5 F (-20.5 C) last night. Wind chill in downtown Boston was -22 F (-30 C) this morning as my wife proceeded to work.
It is very quiet here today, a very few very well bundled up people on the streets heading to the subway station as I drove Amy to the station this morning.
Apparently no school in most communities here today because of the concerns about exposure.
This is unusually cold for around here, we had some similarly cold weather about 4 years ago, but I don't believe it made it quite this low in my area.
The car lives in the garage, has synthetic lubricants and cranked much slower than usual. Started fine. Some of my neighbors apparently experienced frozen fuel lines. (I'm very careful to buy my gas at high volume stations, and restrict myself mostly to two specific Sunoco stations that I have a long history with.)

It got to -5 here overnight as well. It was -4 when I left for the gym at 6:45. My car lives outside in the cold. I'm sure that the 2 year old Walmart battery was shivering this morning when I turned the key, but it started.....slowly. I use only synthetic oil.
It is about a 7 minute trip to the gym, during which time I saw one other car. Usually there are dozens, plus school busses and kids....Schools, and many government buildings were closed today here as well. The temp gauge was still buried below the "C" when I got there with no heat from the vents. The gym attendant said that I was the first customer of the day. They open at 5AM for people on their way to work. There were no other customers while I was there.
It was -3 when I got home at 8 AM. It is +5 now at 2 PM. A strong wind from the north west makes it rather nasty outside.
Despite the extreme cold the 10 year old heat pump managed to hold the house at 66 degrees throughout the night.
It looks like we are in for a repeat with more snow tonight and tomorrow, and more below zero weather tomorrow night.
And my old friends in Florida are complaining about 57 degrees!

I drove to the nearby subway station to pick up my wife, normally she would walk the short distance home, but I didn't want her to because of the cold. In the 10 minutes I waited at the station the car thermometer registered a 3 F degree drop in air temperature - even more here at home.
After checking out the divorce thread, your post is a cool waft of fresh air.

Thank you soldersmoker! I've been following that thread to some extent so I know exactly what you are talking about. 😀
While we only had 1 inch of snow in December (average is 12 inches) the temperature roller-coaster continues.
Dec. 24 hi 59°F Christmas Eve records -10°F & 65°F
Dec. 31 low 14°F New Years Eve
Jan. 3 hi 54°F
Jan. 4 hi 57°F
Jan. 7 low 7°F
Jan. 8 low -3°F
Now with very high winds and very low temperatures the Lake Erie snow belts are getting lots of snow.

The wind's gusting around 90mph here, thought the roof was coming off a few minutes ago, lights flickering but still on (so far). Winter in Scotland is not for the faint hearted but at least I'm not working outside in the dark with ice, snow and temps around -16 C like I was this time 3 years ago.

In choosing a spot on this Earth to spend time, there's always a downside from mother nature..... 😉
Temperature now about -9 С, but wind very strong, icing of roads, roofs and trees.A temperature was -20 С yesterday morning.

Yup, I often wish we had evolved from a creature that hibernates during winter 😀
excuse me for asking, but where in Scotland ? I live on the northernmost point of an island sticking out in the Arctic waters. We don't og below -10C very often, but humidity is very high, and often Winds, too, so it can get quite blistering around here too....

There's a fascinating book "The Discovery of France" -- humans did hibernate (of a sort), even in the middle ages, sustaining themselves on the occasional beer.
Light snow here in NJ, temps just broker over 20F.
Happy to report it warmed up sometime between midnight and this morning, it's now 26 F (-3.3 C) here. The cold snap is over, it will warm to the positively balmy 30 F (-1.1 C) by the end of the day.
I wouldn't mind a little hibernation right now with a sustaining bit o' beer, however I suspect the wife might take a dim view of the idea.. lol
I don't know if it has made it to the Boston area yet, another round of storms came here overnight that caused near white out conditions this morning but only 20 degree temps, but another round of below zero temps are expected overnight here. The storm blew down from Lake Erie and looks to be nearing Boston now (9:45 AM Friday).

No prob, I live in North Argyll on the west (wet) coast, winter temperature here is usually mild compared to the east coast because of the moderating effect of the gulf stream but most days that just means more dam rain 😡
Sometimes it goes wrong though and we get arctic temperatures like 3 years ago.
I have a friend who lived on Smola Island for a few years, the fishing industry here is caput so he went to Norway for the Cod fishing. He married an English woman from Devon quite recently so I don't think he'll be back 😀
