The Weather

Hi George,
They're billing it as a potentially major storm here, two feet or more of snow, at 2 inches an hour (5cm/hr) and 70mph (112kph) winds in the coastal zone of MA which is where I live.. lol

Despite the hype this is not all that unusual around here, 2011 was a spectacularly snowy winter here and even last year was no joy.. lol The media likes to make a very big deal out of it.

The snow blower is all set to go and as long as the power remains on (likely) I plan mostly to play in the cellar man cave.. lol

Hope all is OK down your way, I expect it will get here sometime tomorrow afternoon.

The local TV convinced the whole town to go to the grocery stores at once, and many people did....but nothing like the "hurricane panics" we had in Florida where the grocery stores and gas stations could be emptied in a matter of hours. The rain and snow has started here and is expected to continue until tomorrow evening, leaving 6 inches behind. Shouldn't be too big of a deal since we got almost 4 inches on Friday, but today's rain washed most of it away. We will just stay home tomorrow.

I went out to the new house yesterday to make sure that the electrician had did as I asked. He was there Friday to finish the wiring......Yes my new basement lab has 10 Killowatts of power available! A dedicated 240 volt 30 amp line and a dedicated 120 volt 30 amp line, just for equipment. This is in addition to the basement's standard 20 amp outlet circuit and 20 amp lighting circuit. I also have 30 amps of 120 volts for my wood shop in an old modular home.....big tube amps, no problem.

The weather is the weather as they say, not much we can do about it.. 😀

Hoping that there is a bit of hype with this forecast and the storm will not be as bad as the pundits expect it to be.

I plan to sit back and watch the fun and clean up afterwards.. I've no compelling need to go anywhere tomorrow through Wednesday at least.

Seattle had 63dg F this past Sunday - 15 above historical average, and Victoria has had only 8 days this month with lows at or below freezing - haven't had to scrape frost in the morning since before Christmas

Now, record setting or not, the east coast is certainly getting beat up real good

Here are some choice pictures from my neighborhood. We got a lot of snow, a fair amount of drifting and to be fair in one or two of the pictures of my yard the snow blower added a coupled of inches.

There was virtually no snow on the ground yesterday afternoon at 4:00PM to put it in perspective.

In total we got about 2 feet.

My wife took these pictures this afternoon just after the snow fall ended.

We got 4 inches from round one last week.

Round two started off Saturday with a day of light rain washing it all away, so the ground was green. The snow started falling early Monday morning and finally stopped this afternoon. Total accumulation here, about 5 or 6 inches, maybe 7 or 8 out where the new house is being built. There was almost no wind yesterday afternoon and all day today and the snow fall rate was light, so I actually ran a lap around the jogging track (1.1 miles) in our neighborhood in sweatpants and a t-shirt. There were a couple of other die-hards out there too, but they were more heavily dressed, and moving a lot slower. Now that the snow is gone....the COLD comes. Right now it's 15 degrees, with tonight's expected to be near zero.

Round three is expected Thursday or Friday.

Maybe unrelated, but all the gas stations raised their prices 20 cents overnight last night.

Wish I lived in your neighborhood.

Dale

Thank You Dale!

We've been here 11 years and the house is a work in progress. We're about equidistant from two subway stops and the beach. Lots of restaurants, and hair salons around here, two super markets within easy walking distance of the house. Lots of greenery (except our lawn!) in summer, and it's very quiet except for the distant rumble of the subway trains which run above ground here. Lots of reserves, parks and the beach within an easy walk. Land of Dunkin' Donuts, 3 within walking distance of the house.. LOL

But how far is it to a REAL hardware store (NOT Home Depot!), and can you buy electronic parts on a Saturday afternoon?

Dale

We actually have a bonafide hardware store a few miles away, and a small, but often disappointing one a five minute walk away.. lol

There is "You Do It Electronics" In Needham which on Saturday is about a 25 minute ride from the house, but it's not too great. Most of my parts come from Digi-Key, Mouser and a number of other places.. LOL

When I lived in Cambridge years and years (and years) ago, it was Solid State Sales, walking distance to my campus. There was also Poly=Paks and BnF Enterprises for mail order. This was very, very pre-internet and pre-personal computer (unless you were a weirdo with a teletype or a PDP-8 in your dorm room - there were a couple of those).

Yeah, bought my first uA709 from Poly-Paks. Think it cost nearly half a day's take-home pay from a typical student job.

Did you forget John Meshna? And for speakers, McGee Radio? (At 1901 McGee St, no less.)

(In the mid 70's I lived in suburban Kansas City. On Saturday mornings, McGee's sales room was crammed with folks buying speakers and surplus electronics.)

Dale

I always salivated over the Meshna catalogs (such as they were), but I never bought anything from him.
Mc Gee Radio is duly noted, but I was trying to keep it reasonably local (Mc Gee was all the way out in Mo, and Poly-paks and BnF were at least in Lynnfield and Peabody, respectively). There were also a few Olson stores around Cambridge that had interesting stuff now and then.

3⁰ F today.

With TRW and Eaton in Cleveland, we had many electronic distributors -- Pioneer Electronics on 55th Street had everything but was expensive. They also carried ham radio equipment. WinterRadio on Lorain was less expensive and the Jesuit physicist had an expense account there!

We also had Olson and Lafayette, close to Bernie's Ham Shack. There was an electronics surplus place in Parma called "Jefftronix" which still had ART-13's.

Later, Heathkit had store on Chagrin Rd. in Beachwood, but it only lasted a few years.
Anyone remember Burstein Applebee?

And Gould(Brush), Allen Bradley, Reliance, Picker Xray, Keithley and Victoreen to add to the list.

Before that they were on Prospect Ave.(now the Innerbelt freeway). They also had a good hi-fi department. I bought a Thorens TD124 and a SME tonearm there.

I remember the one on W25th near Detroit and their store in Parma.

There was the real Electronic Surplus - Electrical, Electronics & Electromechanical Supplies near Olson's and Lafayette, it opened in 1946 and is still open.

Heathkit also had a store in Parma. I don't remember a brick & mortar Burstein Applebee.
