The use of force

With a proper 2nd order crossover, the original piezo super horn wasn’t all that bad. It took a few more parts to properly implement than just one L and one C. But those Fosters are some 7 to 10 dB louder at a given drive voltage. And they are limited to 10 watts of average power. Still enough to rip you a new eardrum.

I was going to say that. They are advertised as not needing a crossover, but they can be tamed with the right crossover. First step is to use a parallel resistor to flatten the impedance curve.

When tamed they sound crisp and dynamic, not loud and screechy.

IMO, pitbulls, you can have them....
Friends of mine, a nice modern couple with kids, owned a pitbull from puppy.
Always trained it and gave it the best to keep it happy.
But one afternoon, the mom went out to get the baby's bottle out of the kitchen, and the beast tore the baby from it's crib in the living room.
No warning.
Baby survived the mauling.
Pitbull was put down.

That is a hard one for the "it's the owner not the dog" club. I have read the same a few times here. Could this be a kind of jealousy to the "new thing that gets all attention"?

Anyway, one should never leave a baby unattended with any animal around that is being able to access it.

I would have liked to see Florida before it became the retirement destination of the whole country.

I've been to Florida a few times. Miami is beautiful if you have $$$.

Even being from Chicago, Miami was odd to me. There is extreme juxtaposition of big wealth and crime ridden poverty. My hotel in a western suburb was very upscale and posh......I'm talking broad daylight 10AM and they're selling dope at the stoplight.

I’m not sure I’d consider Florida anymore. Tampa was enough to sour me on it.

I grew up south west of Miami within walking distance of the University of Miami. The are was "rural" according to my birth certificate, and indeed uncrowded and a mix of small 2 bedroom wooden houses and mega mansions intermixed. "Civilization" came and we wound up in big city sprawl and the crime that came with it.

I was robbed at gunpoint within a mile of my house at age 17, and things didn't get better after that. I got a job at Motorola at 20 and moved 30 miles north west of Miami.

The Motorola plant where I worked was surrounded by cows on 3 sides in 1972. All the cattle are now gone and all available land has been developed. The tri-county area now has about 7 million people, and that's just the ones that were counted. There are lots of undocumented people.

At age 25 I bought a house in a middle class neighborhood on the edge of the Everglades where I stayed for 37 years. Things got quite ugly in the last 10 years. When the state run homeowners insurance company pulled an illegal move jacking my rates to $4300 per year because I had good credit, while neighbors in the same house with the same coverage but less than stellar credit paid about $2000, I cancelled my coverage completely and vowed to leave the state before hurricane season in 2014. I was a little late, but got out by July.

Would I ever go back to Florida? I still find nice places to visit, but If I had to live there I would probably go for the "redneck coast." It probably wouldn't be much different than here except for the crowding, prices, and.....hurricanes.....and insurance to cover hurricanes.

Advents were somewhat revolutionary when I started to get into audio.

I remember the Advents I heard sounded pleasant but kind of muffled. Balanced sound but lacking dynamics. They wouldn't play loud either. They were in stark contrast to the speakers I was building, which were big (zero WAF factor) with really big sound.

These speakers are better than that I'm thinking. Are they better than the popular early Advents?

Bach then it was go loud or go home in my book. Still is. 😀

When I worked part time in audio salons back in the 70's, I learned and was keen to speakers and their various "voicing" properties.
Like humans, and all living things, each one has a certain voice.
And, like us humans, we all have our own preferences.

Same goes for speaker systems.

That said, yes, to some people the Advent "sound" wasn't their "flavor".
Advent even promoted the way their speakers sounded. - neutral, not accenuating any part of the spectrum.
It was part of the "East Coast Sound", as opposed to the West Coast "in your face" brassy midrange sound signature. (JBL, Cerwins, etc)

The Japanese systems were similarly a kind of brassy too.
That "loud" effect turned some people's heads, so they chose it.
It was more bold and "alive" and attractive to them, rockers loved it, naturally.

But for me, it gave me headaches, I grew weary, fatiqued, from listening to many of those showroom speaker systems.
I wanted something more "accurate", more neutral, balanced.
The Dynaco's, KLH's, Boston Acoustics, and Advents were more my speed.
I owned them all, I was lucky to be working in a store that let me take a pair home for a few weeks each.
I settled on the Advents, the originals, and was happy as a pig in slop.
Long gone now, the newer Maestro's are permanent, similar performance, with a bit more "bite" due to the midrange.
And intelligent use of tone controls/equalizer suits my ears in the living room.

According to the mother, she only left for maybe 30 seconds when she heard the baby scream.
And the dog was laying on its pooch bed at the time.
Sneaky dog....... dead dog now.

Back to OP : now I´ll show why I called your wounds dangerous yet called you "lucky" (they didn´t carry on attacking you) and why I insist on stoppping dogs NOW! within seconds with 100% certainty, 99% is not enough.

Be warned, graphic images of a thief caught inside an elderly Lady´s property by two Pittbulls:

Cheesy robotic voice but images are real, both fuzzy video surveillance and Hospital room pictures.

This is not a random "internet video" but 9 ó clock TV news.

Pitbulls Comen Pierna Ladron (IMAGENES FUERTES) - YouTube

The "official" news report (no graphic images, only to show it´s "real news" and not some Internet foolery or sick prank.
Dos pitbulls le comieron las piernas a un ladron - YouTube

The State Attorney stating they will NOT sacrifice/put down those dogs, "because they were doing their job", meaning 3 AM, INSIDE an old defenceless lady´s house.
No sacrificaran a los pitbulls que atacaron a ladron - YouTube

Sadly the (female) Judge is accusing the old Lady of "grievous wounds damage" against the (presumed) thief and accused him only of "trespassing" (which is relatively minor) because "she has no proof he was actually trying to rob anybody" .

Yea, sure, jumping a fence at 3 AM in a sparsely populated area.
He claims he was playing football (what Americans call soccer) and he jumped the fence "to get his ball back"

Only problems being he seems to play alone (nobody else in the street or anywhere close), in pitch darkness (notice the almost unwatchable videos) and no ball was found anywhere.

But of course the Judge must show her politically correct attitude or else.

Oh well, brave new world.

I came home to a thief in my house. I made it a point to scare the crap our of him. I roughed him up pretty good. When I had him cowering in the corner I called the cops. He tried to say I used excessive force and the cops asked me what happened. I said he came at me when I walked in the house and it was case closed. The cops knew exactly what happened; you could tell by the smirks on their faces. There wasn't a mark on me and his eyes were swollen shut and his nose was over by his eye. I was not charged.

I don't wish for the guy in the article to have the flesh ripped off his legs. I don't wish for a burglar to be shot dead. But hey, if you break into someone's house, or try to steal their car or bike, then you shouldn't be surprised when you get shot or chomped on by dogs.

Here in Illinois it's nice and legal to kill an intruder in your house. There was even a case where a guy waited for the burglar to break in and then shot him dead. He was arrested but 7 days later the DA dropped the case when they realized they'd never be able to assemble a jury that would convict the homeowner.

Another incident that's more recent (20 years ago) happened at my present house. I saw guys casing my house. Every day for 2 weeks these 2 guys watched me leave for work. Then one day they showed up in a pickup truck and I knew it was showtime. There they were, sitting right across the street in a purple pickup truck (not very smart), waiting for me to leave for work.

So I called work and said I was going to be late. I put on my khakis and button down shirt and pulled out of the garage just like every work day. I parked around the corner, and went down my neighbor's gangway to the alley. I went down the alley to my garage and there they were, two guys with crowbars trying to get into my garage. The even had their purple pickup truck parked in my driveway. Well I must have looked pretty scary, because they both ran to their truck, and drove off at 50-60 mph in a residential area, running stop signs and ducking around a railroad crossing. I called the cops but they never caught them. I never saw those guys again, and in the last 20 years been zero funny stuff going on around my property (except for people picking my flowers, which is another rant).

Should have had someone park right behind them in front of the driveway and block them in. That would have assisted in apprehension.

As long as you’re not up against the likes of Max Cady - but most of them just aren’t that smart.

That's the truth.

There's more to the story. The guy's truck had been stolen out of his driveway the day before while he was at work. The guy stayed home the next day and waited in the house. Sure enough, the burglar pulled up in his driveway driving his truck. He was going to load the guys truck up with the loot! The guy had left a front window conspicuously open 😀 and the burglar climbed right in the window, where he met lead.

If that isn't a stupid burglar, then I don't know what stupid is.

The normal procedure is just to ignore it - as most people consider retaliation to be excessive especially if no actual harm has been done. There’s one husky on the course that has been chasing me at close range off and on for at least the last 5 years but never once attempted to bite or block my path. Another big black overweight dog half a mile up the same road acted more menacing, but was really too old and slow to be a problem. And it was downhill away from his owners place. There was a pack of SEVEN of them on part of the course I no longer use that have knocked me off the bike in the middle of traffic a couple times. A couple of them have gotten clobbered by my fist a few times too and wouldn’t come out without their buddies anymore. But the little Nissan Altima that I got pieces of from the crash site back in February forced me off that route onto this one. There weren’t any dogs out that day or I would likely not be here. She claimed the sun was in her eyes (which it probably was). If the dogs had forced me into the middle of the road that day the impact with the car would have been much worse. Just two broken ribs (from impact with the car) and collar bone (from impact with the ground) and a shattered rear wheel. Bike frame is titanium of course, one of the reasons I still have it after 23 years. Everything else has died. I didn’t need to get a tetanus shot after the bite because I JUST HAD ONE.

In the Uk the matter would be reported to the police and dog would probably be put down.
Well, it WAS reported to the Police, instantly the Court was informed, and a Judge both accused the dog owner and ordered the dogs put down.
Not sure what difference you see with UK.

If any, neighbours made a petition with 1800 signatures , the City Security Chief backed it, and then the dogs were spared, but only because of a "Popular/Citizen" intervention.
Not sure that would have worked in UK.

Hindsight now, but I would have blocked their truck in, called the cops, and have a weapon handy.

I frikk-en hate people that steal from others.
It wouldn't bother me is they hanged crooks for stealing.
Like in the old days.
