They were what most would consider ‘common folk’
Some of the best food I’ve ever had was plain ol comfort dishes.....must be the excess of butter!

Yes .... Back with my Grandma and Grandpa we had lots of butter
( because we had cows ) .... And lots of eggs ( since we had chickens )
Custard was a favorite : )

Yum! Butter, lard, deep fried - they all have their charm...

Bigos -- good stuff.
krautfleckerl — I think it's more of traditional austrohungarian dish. 😉
THANK YOU!! We'll be cooking it at my house, tonight!
I like the term 'peasant food'. Some of my favourite dishes fall into that category. In the past it was popular dish of the poor people, very popular in Croatia too.
That's an interesting take, as through the ages and in many cultures butter is extravagant. To be brought out only when guests were expected. Other fats yes, as fat was an important part of the diet. Now it's so available we even store it on our bodies. 😉Some of the best food I’ve ever had was plain ol comfort dishes.....must be the excess of butter!
So, the fermented red grapes were a one time experiment I think. They're no longer sweet, they're not very tangy, they're not salty and the texture is as though they have rotted.
Um-num!
They make a nice addition to things but cannot be served on their own.

The green beans and Shanghai bok choy on OTOH are exactly what the doctor ordered. Albeit a wee salty so I like to wrap them in something like a romaine leaf to balance it out.
Fat is where it’s at!
Until you know the pleasures of a....leaf lard crust apple pie, chewing the fat from a nice grilled ribeye, several sticks of butter in a pot of mashed potatoes, Brussel sprouts sautéed in bacon grease, I could go on and on but I’m getting fat just thinking about it!

I was with you all the way until... brussel sprouts. I know some people love them. I just can't do it!
Bok Choy otoh, mmmm!

I wonder if Brussel Sprouts are the most contentious issue in the Known Universe? 😀
Way beyond String Theory versus the Standard Model of Physics?
Kids won't eat them. Adults force them down in the Knowledge of better things to come.
Frankly, in Midwinter or December, what else you gonna eat that is Healthy or Green? 😕

Pass the bowl over
*Brussels sprouts, obviously. 😉
Thank you Daniel for reminding the exalted members, the name of the city is Brussels, not Brussel.
I'm here for the community, Cal. 🙂
It's easy to remember when you think, "I do want multiple Brussels sprouts, lets make sure everything is plural"
*Obviously that's not the origin

My dislike may stem from when I lived, decades ago, on the San Mateo coast where they grow hundreds of acres of "sprouts" every year. The stench from the stalks left to rot in the fields after harvest was stomach turning and lasted for a month or more. Well, that and the fact that what I was forced to eat as a kid was horrible.
In 1980 on my way out to Cali, I passed by some cabbage fields in upstate NY left to seed - what a stench, only surpassed by a mile-wide stockyard I drove past in Nebraska.
I thoroughly enjoy Brussels sprouts, this year I am planting my own. They're just starting to come up in the windowsill behind the aquarium.
Edit:
BTW, we call them "Rosenkål" which directly translated is somewhere in the vicinity of "Rose-cabbage".
A much nicer name IMO.

The art of preparing Brysselkål as they are called over here (Swedzzerland - think cuckoo clocks and Volvos) is to treat them like an chunk of that Wagyu Kobe Steak. It's about not over- or undercooking as one way will make the sprouts to taste bitter and the other just produce ammunition for your musket.
I have tried to cook them just a little, then cut them i halves and finish them in a frying pan with amounts of butter.
