The "Elsinore Project" Thread

At the beginning I was discouraged. Now I am elated as to how great they are sounding.

And I am relieved. 🙂

I don't think there is much doubt that I wear my heart on my sleeve when it comes to this... Joe, take a deep breath... again. lol
The sound is unique in a lot of great ways. It is not artificial...

Thank you. And zero artificial brightness that I object to in so many speakers.

Hi all and @Joe Rasmussen in particulary,

I’m in the middle of buiding my ULD Elsinores, and have a question.
Because of the unavailability outside the UK of the Miflex capacitors, i am using Duelind for the tweeter, it is the tinned copperfoil version.
Would the sound benefit of a bypass cap on this section? Amd if so, can someone point me to the best value and type of bypass?

Corne:

Those with far more experience than me may have better advice to offer, but I'd suggest starting with Cornell Dubilier 940C 0.01uF or 0.022 uf capacitors (the higher the voltage rating the better) to start. They're inexpensive and an excellent value. If you liked the effect you could always replace them with something more exotic.

Tony Gee loved them (https://www.humblehomemadehifi.com/Cap.html) and his reviews might also provide insight into alternatives.

Regards,
Scott

So you can still buy them? The drop-down menu selecting country to ship to, has some very odd exceptions. The US is there, but England is missing and so is Norway and others too - definitely not Australia. Why? And do they have actual stock and the right 1.8uF value?

You mean Duelund, right. Not some similar Chinese knock-off brand with similar name? Just kidding. 😊

If this is the Duelund 1.8uF tinned copper cap that I heard and was fitted to a locally Sydney made Elsinores, then they will work very nicely. A little bit brighter tonally than Miflex and they had a slightly different charm about them. Very good indeed and some might even prefer it over the Miflex 1.8uF.

HiFiCollective usually has a pretty complete set of the Miflex caps for sale, albeit at a premium price. It’s possible that Miflex’s distributorship agreement with HiFiCollective prohibits Miflex from selling in the UK. Is there a Miflex distributor in Australia? It so happens that the North American distributors for Miflex don’t seem to carry a broad selection. As someone who has had some experience negotiating distributorship agreements (amongst others), this situation suggests manufacturer-to-end user sales prohibitions based on distributor stock requirements.

Or maybe not.

Struggling with the price of the Miflex Caps, I asked the Hifi Collective if they would match the sale that Parts Connexion was having on their Miflex caps, or if they had any coupons or sales going on (this was about a month ago) to which they responded... "No".

So with that I mention that Parts Connexion is sometimes a little flexible if you send them an email. So I would give that a shot. However, it won't be for the Miflex as I believe they are closing those out. It would be for Duelunds. Which isn't such a bad thing 🙂
