The Boominator - another stab at the ultimate party machine

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
Hi.
My two LIFEPO4 12V20Ah starting to short out and i had to jack them out of booinator signature as they made alot of smoke and swollen.
I need new and therefore I will ask about c-amp. Can I use it in signature? And what about Voltage? I really like all features like auto on/off and dsp. If I can use c- amp, do I need BMS?

If you're using any kind of lithium chemistry, you'll want a premade pack that has a BMS which does indvidual cell protection/balancing, like this one:

Custom LFP 12.8v 6.6Ah Module w/ PCB & 6" 18Awg Open Wires (CU-MM169 PID# 5632)

The cAMP does overall charge/discharge protection, which is adequate for lead acid batteries, but can't protect individual cells in a lithium battery. Personally I use lead acid batteries, they're heavier but it's hard to beat them dollars per amp hour.

Well, then this balancer pcb I'd seen in your gallery wasn't connected all the time? (Or while charging)?
No it shorted out first time i use it because it was wrong wired from produser.
I put in a New one after a while but it didnt last long.
I had no problem until i lent it to some friends and i think they run batteries all flatt.
Ijust figured out that C-AMP is only two channel so maybe i can use two of them?
If not i just get some New batteries and use amp9.

Sounds odd to me. Something is really wrong with these boards, as they should also protect the pack from being run flat. Was is always the balance bleed resistor that failed?

I'm thinking of building 2 standard stereo speakers but using the boominator drivers as they seem to be well liked and are cheap. For use in a camper van but with the option of taking them outside and perhaps adding a sub.

Would ported be the way to go? What sort of response should I be looking for, I can't seem to find the info on the boominator volume and port tuning.

Hi

Has anyone tried using 18650 rechargeable batteries? At 3.7v, three or four in series should give a good voltage. You could then parallel the packs to increase amp hours.

The best non-fake ones appear to be LG MJ1 @ 3500mAh. Three packs in parallel would give circa 10Ah.

They are not cheap, but certainly lightweight.

I did start some tests in winISD, but am using a mac at the moment, will have to go back and then post some results.

I would recommend the yellow zippy compact batteries from hobbyking, I use them for model airplanes and also small boomboxes and they are good value.

A fully charged 4S lithium battery ranges from 12v (flat) to 16.8V (fully charged). 3S gives you 9V to 12.6V. Bit wider then LiFePO4 and SLA but definitely still usable. And I'm amazed how cheap the things are these days - 18650s do cost a bit of money, but Hobbyking pouch packs are very cheap.

Only real catch with lithium batteries is they require cell management/protection, to maintain cell balance and to prevent the battery (or individual cells within it) from overdischarging or being charged in an overdischarged condition... things which can lead to fire. You'll want to buy a protection PCB to go with the battery you build.

They also don't work well below 0C, if you plan on using your system in the winter.

Hey Guys!

As you may have seen in my previous posts we are building a boominator. Our main role model is the one of LUTKEVELD!

Click on the Link to see three clips of our first real outdoor sound test. There are some problems with the sound itself:
- There is an ugly scratchy sound (at medium volume)
- The Bass is lacking massively. Hip Hop Songs sound pretty dope but electrical bass parts (such as of some songs of "Eskimo Callboy") are not even played by the boominator.

The construction as well as the parts are all from accusafe.nl. We are using the Maxamp20.
ONLY THING DIFFERENT TO THE ORIGINAL SKETCHUP MODEL: We shortened each "hole board" (the boards between the speakers) by 2.5 cm to increase the space for the electronical installations in the middle of the boominator.

Can someone of you guys give us some advice how to tune the sound to more bass and to more "clearness" (without scratchy noises) ???

Is this amp recommended for a cleaner sound? 🙁
