Adding to my belief that everything we say here is being recorded, for no reason at all Youtube recommended several videos on Apollo mission computers yesterday.
It turns out in 1969 they used 15(14)bit numbers with simple sign/magnitude but the guidance software had provision for double and triple resolution numbers which would be (?) 44bits plus sign or around 13 decimal digits resolution.
