The Best DAC is no DAC

Why not replicate what Hazard started out with before moving to TVCs; differential outputs from the flipflop into Lundahl 1527XL transformers?

I preffer to experiment with cheaper parts at first before getting the expensive ones i will be using in the final build. the bay is filled with different used audio transformers, some go for very cheap.

on a different note, just for the heck of it, i tried streaming DSD through Foobar to my JLsound board.. not much luck. it seems Foobar needs a number of plugins to play DSD and i havent figured how it all works just yet.

Hi tank,
I'm building ray's board too, I've received them this week.
As some has mentioned before; look into HQPlayer (signalyst.com) with an NAA(network renderer).
That way you can keep using windows on your living room pc and you can upsample your pcm files to 8xDSD(if your pc has enough power. I.e. a i7 7700k or 6700k) and play DSD files.

Well, the Lundahl 1527 datasheet will tell you what you're looking for in your transformers.

There are a few guides online for setting up Foobar for DSD, like this one;

Any good 600ohm:600ohm line transformer will get you there. Edcor is well regarding for cheap but good transformers. EBay is the other option of course.

Ok, last night i figured out how to upsample pcm to DSD on foobar. Now time to read up on Naa.. the idea of placing a Raspberry Pi sounds like a very elegant solution.

So let me get this straight. the idea with the Naa is to "free" the computer from the upsample duty and have the Pie do it?

once the boards are here (and built) i will pick up the HQplayer trial version and see how it works for me as well.

thats it, you convinced me 🙂

No, neither a BBB or a RPi have anywhere near enough processing power to do such upsampling. You do the upsampling on your powerful PC and then stream the resulting DSD to the NAA. There are Linux images for both the RPi and BBB on the Signalyst website though I've not used them myself;

https://www.signalyst.eu/bins/naa/images/

I believe these images are for an NAA into which you plug a USB board, like the JLSounds.

OK. So the role of the naa is to just push the DSD data into the JLsound board? i see why it is relevant when using windows - you use linux on the naa and then you can go native DSD (which you cant on windows), but if i use linux in the main (upsampling computer) whats the advantage of the naa?

Again, im sorry if im asking basic questions, but my knowledge on the subject is very limited.

Hammond 140QEX

Nickel core appear a good feature but
Primary inductance is not that high: 10.6 H

Is this enough to reproduce low frequency?
IIRC, F3 = R/(2*pi*L).

So if output impedance of flip flip is 50 ohm then f3 is less than 1Hz.

So what is the output impedance of the flip flop? Not sure, but when I was experimenting with high pass filters I used that value for simulations, which seemed to match OK with what I actually heard. But then again, don't trust my ears. I was out jamming the other night with my band and my ears were ringing!
