Test LP group buy

Interesting that they say their stamper is good for 300,000 pressings . As I understand it, the old process started to lose quality after far less - the degradation at quantities exceeding 1000 said to be easily noticeable. That's a huge difference in numbers. Is it believable?

Metallurgy? I know some people who have been able to compare pressing along the life of the stamper and say the difference from beginning to end is marked.

But with a run of 200 pressings or so that a test LP would get? Can't think it would make much difference. Perhaps that something we could also test. 😉

What have they changed to make it so?

Right now, no idea other than the possibility that I'm wrong.: ) The 300,000 figure was given in reference to their molds, which at first I took to mean stampers as they never use both words together in the same place, but reading again and finding they also talk about nickel plating lacquers etc. I think that mold only refers to the steam heated disc shaped fixture of their own design that then carries a typical stamper.

I doubt we’ll get farther than halfway through 1 stamper.

I think our “interest check” signup is under 200.

If we totaled 500 copies in two separate runs / GBs id be impressed.

If the diyaudio store wants to carry it, they can address that in further editions, or just get another stamper..... most likely there will be desired changes / things learned / tweaking after the first.

My vote would be to make an “at your own risk” sample of a run of 100, and then address any imperfections in a second run. It will give us a clear idea of what to improve and it’s not just conjecture / pussyfooting.

The more I’ve explored this topic the likelihood of a first try near-optimal result which will please all participants is almost nil.

Also, Third Man Records just invested a ton of dough in their pressing plant. I think we could find a sympathetic ear in Jack White. Anyone here know him?

I'm just waiting until we have an actual run. I'm in and would also go for the first run as well.

I'd like the common test signals as well. I really don't want to have a series of LPs to find a few signals. Let's make one that does the job. If there are tracks I don't need, that's perfectly fine.

I used to run a robotic CD duplicator. What a piece of work that was! Always problems, always breakdowns and errors. I applaud anyone who can get an automated replicator like this working.

I had a Tascam that was flawless.

Literally not one tossed disc.

I've been taking some measurements off of the Dr. Feickert Adjust+ LP and noticed it is as off center (and the center hole has lots of play) as any LP I have ever seen. I have no literature for it, is this intentional? I have not tried using the play to get it centered but I have a hard time imagining this is the intent.

It's so bad the 1kHz test tone causing sympathetic buzz in the cart body has easily audible modulation as it rotates. This does not bode well for demanding a tight spec on this.
