I’m thinking of ordering some things from parts express.
Free shipping over $100.
Considering CPA-15 passive crossover to try with the 3833GG in future MLTL.
ZM said try for 12AWG on low pass inductor.
Only place that had them I could find was Solen…but out of stock.
So was thinking of just getting the Dayton Air Core 14 AWG.
https://www.parts-express.com/Dayto...AWG-Perfect-Layer-Inductor-257-324?quantity=1
They have them in stock as well as some similar Erse 14 AWG .70 mH for the high pass section (off by .01mH from schematic).
https://www.parts-express.com/0.70mH-14-AWG-Perfect-Layer-Inductor-266-335?quantity=1
I was also going to grab the Dayton Poly 250V caps in 6.8uF and 20uF.
https://www.parts-express.com/Dayto...-Precision-Audio-Capacitor-027-238?quantity=1
Lastly the resistors on the high pass.
They have some Jantzen 10 Watt wirewound in the 2.2 Ohm value.
https://www.parts-express.com/Jantz...dio-Grade-Superes-Resistor-255-946?quantity=1
They have a similar 10 Watt Dayton wirewound for the 5.6 Ohm value.
https://www.parts-express.com/Dayto...ion-1-Audio-Grade-Resistor-006-5.6?quantity=1
Looks like it might even be made by the same company.
Is the 10 Watt rating appropriate for the high pass section?
Any issue with the slight .01mH value discrepancy on the high pass inductor?
Any feelings that the components are inferior quality or just a poor value?

Well?
I have never, ever listened to them old oldschool Tannoys.
But strictly physics guessing: Let them Tannoys 12 or 15 inch low x-max play down to: Say 300 to 200 hertz. They will be more than chill with that. Even with 6 db/oct.
So?
Below that? Give them Absolutely no less than Twin 15” higher to really high efficiency BASS drivers: per channel.
Now?
Yeah??? The good sounding, powerful, musical bacon really starts to sizzle?🙂🤚
It might? 😇

chrome - fine tuning of CPA xover - take a pair of decent proper 8R L-pad attenuators; set tweet level to your liking, measure Lpad, replace with fixed resistors
Jey - see my blog - Tann 15 (any in fact) is OB Star
as cherry on top back firing tweet; denuding Tann's compression driver is tricky job

Yeah, ok.
Open baffle: big, open, weakly! nice and flawlessly natural juicily nice.
Bass reflex: Big, strong. Impactful. Juicy. Not as juicy as open baffle, but more muscular.
Closed box: Only use it with ”active” setup. Beautiful. Juicy. Fat. To Dry (if you want). Controlled deluxe.

Andy, you have my undivided admiration for this restoration, really great!

Its not a question of if Andy does a good job with the old stuff.
He clearly does a extremely good job.
It is a question of what you in physical fact need to rock a real, actual boat. What you need to Move some substantial amount of air.
Yea, well. That is: If you really, really want to musically go to some sort of resemblance of high fidelity.
As we all understand. A regular bookshelf speaker is obviously not even very far from close.

Just gruntwork, all MZM spirit over this whole drekAndy, you have my undivided admiration for this restoration, really great!![]()

But thanks alot! Appreciated.
nothing at all
but for answer, shoot a question
no way Jose
difference being both efficiency and sensitivity
now, what you're going to like more - sissy bookshelf or proper big one, that's certainly your business
edit: disclaimer - I like them all; sucker for speakers of all sizes and types

I like it. Trying to take a big juicy bite of my left big toe?
Yeah! Go for it 🙂🤚
But i am not at this moment absolutely certain of what your statement/critique is?
But since i am not here to ”win” a debate about personal taste. (A impossible to ”win” debate.) I will give you a clear discission bait, just for good old fun:
A small speaker, by its limited physical size, is thereby a inferior sort of ”high fidelity”.
Thats not a opinion. Its a undisputable fact.
Or is it? 🙂🤚

On topic of Tannoy…
The first stop for me with 3149 is open baffle with a 15” Acoustic Elegance Dipole woofer below as I’ve said. Just ironing out aesthetics to soothe my OCD.
No need for additional woofers. The AE Dipole will be filtered and driven by a Hypex FA502. Which by itself could drown the poor 3149 in bass up to its pepperpot 😉
My interest in MLTL is that grumpy old men get grumpier and older.
Some times they don’t want to have to fiddle with things to death and maybe just try building a single new amp (like SissySIT or LuDef) and give it a taste while comparing easily to other amps they have with same speaker.
Don’t get me wrong…if I really like the 3149 on open baffle A LOT…I may just decide to put the 3833gg in some baffles with (2) 18” AE per side 😈

@JeyDee
speakers are fun
I like them all, small and big, efficient and not, sensitive and not
I don't care about high fidelity; that's certainly easy to say when I have enough things qualified as that, but good and fun speakers are not only ones declared as HiFi by today's standards
now, with age, I'm finding that talking about specific subject is of greater benefit and lasting longer than trying to paint in widest strokes
anyhow, to answer your specific question...... or was it a claim?
high quality small speaker is having its specific purpose and context of use
high quality big speaker is having its specific purpose and context of use
there is a small area where you can (and even must) use both of them, but out of there - one wins or the other
example 1 - any sort of size limited production repro-studio room (radio, DJ)
example 2 - any sort of recording studio room
example 3 - larger living room
example 4 - bedroom
1 covered with small (monitor) speakers
2 covered with small and large (yup, needing both)
3 covered with large ones
4 covered with small ones

Andy’s innuendo has him spending a lot of time cleaning up sticky fluids after “filling gaps” 😂
Hi guys,
i'm also in the proces of building tannoys. Got the 3836 (3833) drivers from the cpa-15.
My plans changed a bit along the way. (bigger box/smaller box/bigger box original box.....)
Got all the parts and wood/mdf for a dmt clone. And want to start the build coming weeks.
But I keep hearing positive words about the MLTL.....
Could i get the drawings for these boxes? Maybe i should just make the extra space for it?

if you send me a PM, you can get plans for 3833 MLTL
