Hey navin,vivek

I just checked out the P Audio site that was listed. The drivers there are all professional drivers and i was surprised to find that most of the woofers listed have an Fs above 50hz for reasonable sized drivers...also Xmax looks pretty low...

am i missing something...???

ajju

Most PA drivers have high Fs and low Xmax. Tarun and I have been toying with the specs of Selenium drivers. They are quite expensive, not sure whether they would be cost effective for home use.

I would still go with the Peerless if available locally. Bolton has reasonable Fs and Xmax to order! (I recently got 6mm Xmax on 6.5inch driver), but the Qts is poor. Box size will be too large. Only suitable with electronic EQ.

Hi Ashok, thought you will get intouch when you passed through Delhi.

OT:

1st, for Ashok (Corbato): You have a virus in your mail. Please disinfect your pc immediately! I get at least two or three email per day from your id with spammed addresses. I have now blocked your id and will deblock it once you tell me you're clean.

2nd, what is the status on these drivers? I am getting interested myself, and though my apartment in Mumbai is really small I am still interested in DIY HT, even though it will barely accomodate my stereo setup. But I don't mind hedging some money toward a nice set of 2-way minimonitors plus one large sub, later adding a decoder and DIY amps.

Those in Mumbai, do touch base offline, let's have a little session at someone's place for good music. Been not listening for about 1 month now, I'm getting withdrawal symptoms till my stuff arrives.

I am still in the analysis-paralysis stage for this system. I have a working 5.2 AV system and a working stereo system. So I have to find a reason to build too.

My AV amp is a Marantz SR7000. The Stereo pre and power amps are home brew.

I just finished the front speakers of my AV system. They are all black 44" towers with curved sides, a 6" 2 way on top and a 8" woofer at the base. I think I went a bit overboard on the box. it weighs 60kg per side. took 4 people to lift. atleast i know my 18 month old wont be able to topple it.

what inspires me...my mom has declared my stereo system as ugly and my wife wants to dynamite my AV speakers (and kill all my "audio-freak" friends)...so i am looking to build something that has very high WAF and I can live with (from a audio point of view).

I am looking at fullranges (TB, Jordan, and even Fostex if I can find them), conventional 2-3 way speakers, and even ribbons. thinking of using a bipole TL if I use fullranges, dipoles if I use large woofers so the box has limited depth and hence bulk.

the multiple 6" system was a compromise tower. but I have already nixed the idea due to low WAF.

any other ideas?

I got in touch with the local distributor for Torvin, who used to sell Peerless drivers. They have now stopped selling them now. However, the man suggested that I try a woofer called AG from Kolkata. He was not sure about the name but said he had heard their woofers were good. Any info on that?

I reached very late that night. Almost mid-night. There was no point calling you up so late. Went straight to IGI. Spent the remaining 3 hours ogling at the females there. While coming back I took TG. How's the JLH shaping up?

Sangram,

It saddens me to see that talent is moving away from east India. I do wish you success though.

Those virus spiked emails purportedly emanating from me have been a major issue. I've suffered a lot of damage. Almost all my contact had blocked my ID. Can't blame them. It took a lot of effort to diagnose the problem. I had my home and office PC formatted. But the spamming persisted.

The problem was finally traced to my old laptop that was traded for a new one just before I left on a week long visit. The dealer who took back the old laptop forwarded it to a depot in Cal. Somehow, it was infected with Klez virus. Those nice folks in the depot were apparently having a good time with the laptop; whenever they would connect it to their LAN it would send a fist full of junk email as per my address book.

Things are now fine. Please unblock my email ID. I apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Navin

Thanks for the group buy initiative. Please let me know if I could be of assistance in any possible way. Sangram maybe aware of AG drivers.

Indian diy speaker builders

I am quite surprised at the amount of interest in the diy speaker that i see now.
I hav'nt been in touch with the indian scene for the last four years.
One of the greatest drawbacks was getting the TS parameters of any loudspeaks,
Here we have an amazing amount of drivers to choose from.
This year my bookshelf speaker that i submitted in the budget catagory got the second prize in the atlanta DIY contest.
They sounded as good as speakers costing more than twice the prize.
I am certain if we had only access to better drivers in india we can meke great speakers.
These were the bookshelf i made.

not being able to store all my systems i keep the stereo system at my mom's apt, the AV at my wife's apt, another stereo setup i have lent/donated to my BIL (wifes bro).

Navin, I am puzzled. Your wife got to keep the AV !!! , I am sure you are not separated, (I know how much the speaker builder's wives have to suffer) or do you have more than one wife, one with each new speaker project....Why didn't I think of it earlier.

Ashok,

I love your hobbies other than audio. Sensible way of spending time after midnight or anytime of the day.

Have you traded your mobile too, I have been trying to call you for the last couple of days, a lady keeps on saying you have turned it off. what are you up to, or what have you turned on instead.

I am determined to complete printing and etching the JHL headphone amp PCB this weekend. Lets see if I can keep to it.

AAI has outsourced its ground job to Cambata. The beauties are now outstanding. You think I'll trade that to discussing shop with a guy about etching a JLH pcb? :smash:

Several times this past week I needed to travel to areas that have a patchy mobile network. So you had to endure the "Reliance Aunty" as we call her. 😀

WRT to Navin's thin WAF issues, you certainly picture a rosy scenario for him 😉 Just hope that he thinks that way too.

Hi guys
Sorry for dropping out for a couple of days.

Ashok: I've unblocked your id. I think. AG rings a bell. I can ask someone to check (are you sure it's not AKG?).

That baazee woofer is a Delhi-made car woofer (depends on cabin gain, so not very good sensitivity + dubious quality of parts). Not worth it IMO.

remember my wife runs one castle, my mom the other. i dont think of either apt as my own.

I also have a 3rd system (officially gifted to my wife bro). we alternate weekends between my inlaws and my mom so this way i get to listen to music at all 3 locations.

however if i had had the resources I would have contemplated executing the multiple wife - multiple apt/stereo theory.
this way you can have your single driver - SE amp system at one place, your planar system at another, etc..oops i am dreaming again.

I get the picture. One happy family bonded by the love for speaker building.

Where are you parking the 60kgs ones, I hope not on top of your mother-in-laws tows.

Angshu

the 60 kg curved box speakers require a few months (at the speed at which i get things done) of tuning. they are part of the AV system in my wife's living room. she wants to throw themout but they are too heavy for her too.

The finsih is also quite bad. I am going to look at 2 options for them. the first being making the 8" woofer open back and reducing the damping material used and the second involves tampering with the electrical Q. the mid and HF unit are well integrated via a series XO. I can see some room for imporvement there 2.

some day i will post pics. between jobs, the kid, and spending weekends at the grands time is tight.

BTW I managed to sneak into the AV max show in B'bay early sat morn (like 10am)

There was a nice Manger + 8" SS unit. the talk of the show was the Dynaudio C2 but it was too large for the room. I would have loved to hear the Dali's (the use the XT midbass from SS) but they were not set up before i left (noon). Seems to me if it is NYC, SFO, Neu Isenberg, I rarely get more than 120 mins free. AAARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still I should be grateful..... maybe...

the surprise to me was the finish of some of the electronics from Sonodyne et. al. though I am not sure fo the sound. Due to pressure of time I did not get to visit the Sonodyne room. I hear Anindya was demoing some newer models there. anyone got to the AVmax show and hear this?

Next fix will be the show on Nov 6-9. nov 6 is my only open date. hope it stays that way.

Today, I connected the subwoofer out from my Denon AV receiver to my diy amp and an old bolton woofer salvaged from a Sonodyne speaker system. And surprisingly, after checking the connections a million times, the test tone could be heard but not the signal. This was the case in both the 5 channel stereo and Pro Logic mode.
I called up the ProFx showroom. The technician kept saying that an active sub needs to have high gain and that my amp may not have it. How far is that true?
