Re: The new deal did fail

No, the New Deal worked very well indeed.

The new deal had nothing to do with the post war recovery. <p>Roosevelt put the economy into a recession within the depression by raising taxes in 1937. Too bad Milton Friedman was in short pants at the time, it was bad monetary management, compounded with a zealous anti-inflation fear which kept the economy depressed for a decade

Sorry, Jack, the facts contradict your conclusions. Even if we accept your analysis of the effect of taxes in 1937, the fact is that Roosevelt took unemployment from it's height of 24.9%-his first year in office-down to 14.7% four year later. That is an incredible 13% a year reduction in unemployment. Yes, uemployment went back up in 1938, but for the next two years it again decreased 14% a year. After that, the WWII years commenced.

Fact is, even including the jump in 1938, Roosevelt had unemployment decreasing at a wonderful 8% a year-even including that jump in 1938.

Moreover, this was accomplished during the Dust Bowl years of the 1930's when drought ravaged the entire Southwest. Those states were in an economic freefall. Can you imagine what Roosevelt could have done if a whole region of the country was not in the midst of the worst environmental disaster in the history of the United States of America?

Sorry Jack, the facts indicate that Roosevelt's program was working very well indeed. Deal with it-or should I say, New Deal with it. 😀 😀 😀

The folowing chart shows US unemployment levels from 1929 through 1943.

Think more before posting. This is nonsense.

And a german nation stated to exist about 150years before now. There is no cultural homogen history of germans until now. Yoe want to provocate without sense --> a case for sinbin, or you are a little short of brain --- > go, read and learn.

war is always good for rich people, leaders, politicians, criminals and so on. If you talk about peoples, germans or what nation ever, they are alway victims of war. Right now US citicens are victims of Bushs war too - look what happens to freedom and cilvil rights in USA right now.

Go and get yourshelf a little education - read a little Berthold Brecht for a beginning.

Forget when the german nation officially decided to call itself Germany, it was your ancestors who ahnilated a whole roman legion in what I believe is now called the black forest. Wasn't it the 13th legion, and no the goths were not the agressor. Provocate without sense... how about history, which is what I was refering to.

You know I have agreed with some of the things you have said about my country and my president. I have read through some of your other posts and see that you also realize you hold no moral high card. So you call me stupid and tell me to get a little education yet isn't that what your telling me my problem is in the first place. Then, shouldn't I go get a lot of education? Then perhaps I would agree with everything you say and we could rub each others back.
None of this is rocket science and you don't need a college degree to figure any of it out. I am not your enemy, never have been. I have not personally attacked you despite what you think. Get ahold of your emotions

OK, i don´t want to diskuss this war think now - i hope my position is clear when i say i belive more in Brecht than in Bush, Powell and Rumsfeld.

Germans. I don´t know if you ever learned a bit german. Germans call themshelfs nowadays "Deutsche" and the country "Deutschland" since ´45 or so "Bundesrepublik Deutschland" Bund means bundeled, united out of some "Länder" lands. For some it is still more important to be "Bayer" (i belive you know Bayern), Niedersachsen, Hessen , whatever. This has not much relation to germans - these germans who fight with Rom etc are "Germanen" and a lot US amerikans seddlers from europe, and people in the countrys around germany are "Germanen" in this sense too. Also Germanen existed in a lot different variations that days (Teutonen, Hermionen, Friesen, Kimbern, Sueben, Alemannen, Gotonen (goth) NOT Klingonen! and who know Niebelungen) . But there is not much connection with Germanen and borders of countrys today. Nobody here makes a connection between the Name of the country and those antique ancestors. The "modern" Germany was made by forcing a huge lot of very small kingdoms etc. toghether in "Deutscher Bund" , a time of wars and intrigues followed which of the larger kingdoms domminates the others. The dominating was Prussia under something like a nation was defined much larger than a french or britissh nation still existed. People felt still more to be bayrisch or fränkisch.... A kind of national state germany was under Preussen in the scond half of 19th century. It was forced to be a unity by the dominating power of Berlin. But differences in history and identification between Friesen and Niedersachen who feel more belonging to Angelsachen (british) and on the other side Schwaben(i don´t understand the language of older people in Schwaben) or Bayern (who still want to be an independent state, have other political parties and feel different because they historical were opposite to Prussia....) are large.

Also Germanen assimilated in antique rome and you can be sure in italy also Germanen are ancestors of todays people.

So no simplification about germans who are bloodhungry aggressive barbarians. It is not right and so the word propaganda is right. Only for people like Rumsfeld whos family is from germany this may be a good desciption.

Please excuse english isn´t my first language - as you see right here im very involved to practise using it. I´m not able to understand in every detail if i´m attacted and how serios to take it. I don´t want to be anyones enemy, even yours not. ok?

Although I have never read Brecht, I would be more inclined to trust him than I would bush, powell, or rumsfeld. I do not care for any of this present administration and will devote my efforts to not re-electing them when the time comes. No more simplification of the German people and I will admit to going to far. That would in fact be propaganda.

It is very easy to misunderstand when you can not read facial expressions and have to go on substance alone. Your english is coming along fine and it would take a lot more than a disagreement to make me your enemy.

🙂 Thank you for the Lesson on Germany.

I would like to ask every US citizen in this forum what YOU are doing about this? What actions are YOU taking PERSONALLY to reduce the causes of terrorism to yourselves ane the rest of us? How many of you have got off your laurels and written to your elected reps and demanded a change?

I WANT TO KNOW!

They don't even eat with knife and fork...

Culture, is it?

Yuk...Norma...gimme that Burger.

Ciao,😡

Well, let me tell you about what I did over the weekend.

After a trip to the store where I purchased forks, spoons and knives I headed off to China Town in Los Angeles. I walked the streets and entered as many restaurants as possible. My plan was simple, I actually stole the idea from the gun buy back programs I've heard about. I offered a set of flatware, a measure of culture to fdegrove (A.k.a. Frank), for a set of chopsticks. I explained that cultured people use flatware and if you don't use flatware you're a barbarian who cannot support peace. I'm sad to say that none chose culture and peace.

Undaunted, I went to Olvera Street. For those of you who don't know, Olvera Street is considered the birthplace of Los Angeles filled with Mexican stores and restaurants. I was getting hungry so I stopped in for a few carne asada tacos. Being that I wanted to leave my barbarian past behind, I used a set of flatware to eat them. I received quite a few stares but I didn't mind. I knew what I was doing supported peace. Those tacos were mighty tasty and I was energized for some conversion. I relentlessly offered flatware to people that were eating their tacos, taquitos, and flautas with their hands but not one would accept the offer. The whole barbarian/flatware spiel didn't seem to work either. In the name of peace I refused to give up.

I headed west towards Beverly Hills. Surely there were barbarians on the cusp of becoming cultured on the West Side. I went to little Ethiopia on South Fairfax. An enormous variety of wots (what others might call stew) were served with injera, a flat sourdough flavored "pancake". Surely I would have a convert here! Try and try as I may, they all remain barbarians eating with their hands. I couldn't even give away the flatware. It seemed as if no one there was willing to make a simple sacrifice in the name of peace. I had officially given up! On my way out of a restaurant I threw my bag of flatware away in a trash can, a non-recycle trash can.

As I left Little Ethiopia I saw the following on a restaurant wall, "It is said that people who eat from the same plate will never betray one another." I like that saying and I'm going to see if the company I work for can incorporate it via our Cultural Diversity Committee. Funny term for a committee, 'Cultural Diversity'. Hmm... 'diversity'... maybe I can eat food without a fork and knife and still be cultured after all? In-n-Out here I come!!!

Try Bombay Kitchen on Santa Monica. One properly eats their food with the hand. You can explain to the people there that Europeans, who were still painting themselves blue and worshipping rocks when India had an advanced civilization, consider that to be a mark of the Barbarian.

Better still, walk the streets of Brussels, making sure to correct anyone you see eating pommes frites au mayonnaise with their fingers. Give 'em Frank's name and home phone number if they object.

Sy - it's frites et moules

oh man, now you are getting me into the mood of going back to Antwerp for the summer, frites, moules, Duvel & mayonnaise with a little P.P. Rubens. Beats this armpit of a location in NJ.

I think the Arabs would be happier if they ate pork and got drunk once in a while instead of watching camels hump in the desert (yes, that is what they do for entertainment in Kuwait.)

Well, I have a general distrust of those cultures that don't drink. Living in Salt Lake City did that to me. And entertainment in the developing world is often... diverse. During my short time in China, I found out (experimentally) that in the hinterlands, you could hock one on the ground, squat, and watch it slowly run. Within 5 minutes, you'd have a crowd around you, joining you in this meditative pursuit.

But the walk-around food I've had in Benelux is world-class, unlike their native cuisine. Beer, ditto, the best in the world.
