Hey guys, I've just read this entire thread and have decided to go for it. I have an LCD already stripped and ready. I just need to know what kind of optics to use. I need fairly cheap lenses, but I dunno what kinds or where to order them. I'm going to fab. my own box for it, but I can't decide what light source to use (cheaply). Any help with those issues will be much appreciated.
i went to futureshop yesterday in town, and found the very last hipgear controller that they had there. and it was $19.95 CAD. so i bought it. i succesfully stripped it down, and removed any unnecassary items (ie. speakers, speaker inputs, backlight...etc.) all i have now is the panel, the two controller boards, and soldered on power cable and video in. will post pics when i can guys.!! im lookin for a slide projector to complete the project!! going to look for one today!
!!!!! SO HAPPY !!!!!
I went to my grandparents place today and guess what i found?! A kodak 760H Carrosel slide projector!!! Im going to test it out tonight!!! Im super excited!! Will post pics asap.

excellent thread!
What should I look for when buying a slide projector? I would like to minimize the curvature at the edges of the image.
Thanks,
J

gotta hang up here. bulb is dead!! going to have to find a new one. but happy to say that i got rid of all the internal slide parts. there is tons of room for the lcd and boards. i tested out the projection just using the backlight behind the lens after the peice of round glass, and projected a faint image onto my ceiling, and have to say even with the backlight as the light engine and the lcd just hanging in place, its going to be a fun journey to get it complete! Im about 2hrs from when i bought the lcd, stripped it, got the slide projector, stripped it, and tested, all edges are super clear, and there is no rounding of the projected image. now only a couple more hours of work, and a new bulb.! will post pics when i can. Total cost so far: ~$22.00CAD.
**UPDATE**
Got my lcd placed inside the slide projector no problem, along with all the boards. I shone a 60w 120v light through it and projected a 8" image with clear sides and straight focus. All i need now is that bulb! i think its time to go down to home depot and take a look at what they have. pretty sure that they will have a 120v 300w halogen there. Will update.

I'm going to try this, too, with a cheap (but still custom) enclosure - I'm actually thinking about using a metal tool box. For the display, there's a ton of 3" and 4" Lilliput monitors on ebay right now for between $10 - $20. I'm thinking these might provide a better image than the game controller LCDs. As a light source, you can get 100W~150W automotive halogen (replacement headlamp) bulbs for < $10.kletus said:I just need to know what kind of optics to use. I, too, need some advice on the lens. I'm also wondering about the fact that there's been no mention of any fresnel lenses in this project... is that because it's already built into the slide projectors' lens systems? Or were they skipped to keep the costs way down? If the latter, would it improve the image to incorporate a fresnel lens?
Thanks in advance, guys - great topic, great forum!
How's this?
Would this be a good lens for my toolbox/headlight projector? LOL
I'm betting this lens is overkill (looks like a REALLY nice lens) but, the price is right. Can anyone confirm that this should work?

Neglected to mention the screen also comes with an audio video cable for connecting to PS2 or DVD players similar to this one pictured. I looked all over for Hip screen pad's and the only place I could find one was on Walmart's website for $39.82 usd and they have been out of stock forever. Future shop in Canada had them for $27.99 but will not ship to the US. If anyone knows where I can buy another one especially for $17.00 like blueknyt did, please let me know where to get one, I would like to buy one for my son. The one I am selling I got on EBAY and am selling for what I have invested in it.
