retrofit lighting
Anyone know if it would be possible to retrofit some sort of lighting from this CENTURY in one of these? I got a Kodak Carousel 800 which uses the DEK 500 watt bulb..about a 50 hour lifespan.

i want to get onto doing this project as ive already disassembled my lcd, i just need to track down a slide projector. if anyone in toronto has one or knows where to get one, let me know 😉
secondly, i do have the screen and the fresnal lens from a 53" widescreen RPTV, well, the fresnal was mounted so it was inbetween these two other plastic pieces. what would these items be useful for? sorry for the questions, but i havent gone much into DIY projection before.

did you take them out of the RPTV or got them separately? I'm curious to know how a RPTV setup is like... where the fresnel is and the screen and stuff.
tetutigre ,
I know that my RPTV has a gigantic fresnel lens, and a gigantic lenticular sheet (diffuser?), and I think just a peice of matte white plastic....The lenticular part is in the front. If youre curious about the optics and stuff, I can "inform" 🙂 you about that too...lol
icusdude,
You wouldnt happen to have any lenses / lcds / projection screens/ other projection stuff for sale or trade would you? Im in Vaughan, and would love to do local pickups, seeing how I cant order online...
The 53" screen, if it has all its peices can be used with your lcd projector to make an RPTV.

they were out of a panasonic 53" widescreen rptv. i believe one of the layers had a MINOR mark on them which was barely noticeable, but panasonic sent out the repair guys to swap out the screen for a new one. so i was able to keep what they took out, which are fine and in good condition.
im just curious what the fresnal/screens could be used for?

I noticed the screenpad has been discontinued and I cant find a store that carries it for less than $20. Ebay price is around $50 without the ~$20 shipping.
Anywhere I can buy them cheap?

screenpads
I picked up 3 Screenpads today for $25 each from eB games at a local mall.
They were up on a shelf.
Is everyone taking off the front anti-glare stuff?
I'm working to mount two of these in club lights so they do digital projection. I will post tons of pictures if it works. I will probably only get a 1" circle from the screen, so all of the animations will have to be specific to the placement...
Lamp is a 400 watt MSR MH. It travels from the bulb + reflector thru a IR filter, then thru a wheel that has 11 dicro color filters + open, then thru a wheel that has 5 openings that spins to strobe the light, then thru a wheel that has 11 patterns + white, then thru an IRIS, then to the lens. I will remove the IRIS and use the motor that drives it to move the LCD in and out of the light path. The mechanical part of moving the LCD is looking to be a major pain.

Picked up my Screenpad today at BestBuy here in Edmonton for only $29.99cdn 😀
I tested it with it's own backlight hooked to my dvd player inside of my 46" rptv with a delta 78 lens... and well... WOW i'm amazed it actually made a pic about 30" diagonal on the screen that was waychable.
I'm gonna have to tweak the lens positioning and lcd positioning to get the full 46" and also use a custom backlight.
I was thinking of using a car headlight bulb (without the lens, just the bulb) from canadian tire ($4.95) and a soup ladel from Superstore to start tinkering.
I'll take some pics after xmas for ya guys!
Happy DIYing and Merry Xmas!

ive definately made some progress lately. i have the projector all stripped, and ran some very basic testing. i slid the lcd into the slot in the top since now there is room, and tried it out upsidedown and unmounted. i was able to focus a fairly good image with manageable screendoor.
in the next day or two i am going to put together some sort of mounting mechanism for the lcd so i can get to finishing this up. i cant wait to try something out projected correctly.
this is truly an excellent project for its low cost, and relatively few major problems. ill be sure to post some pics 😀

Good to see a fellow Edmontonian here.😉 This was the first projector i tried out, just to see if i could get one to work. Finished it off a week or so ago. I'm building one out of a PS1 screen (the sony one) now, as the pic of the 2.5" screen is pretty blocky. Should have some results of the PS1 after Xmas. This forum is great, keep up all the great info.🙂

theres a nice price for the bulbs many of these slide projectors use. if yours uses that type, that is quite a bit cheaper than you would pay at most places.
if anyone else has any cheap sources for bulbs, post them!

if you want to do better you should build a custom case with custom lighting or retrofit another light source. becasue the light source has very low running hours
LED flashlight for a light source?
I see a lot of people are trying this out (I plan to try it some time soon), and it's pretty freakin cool. I really like it, and the results.
I was really curious about something, though:
With the small size of the screen and nature of the optics in slide projectors (not much light lost from the source), it seems like an LED light source might be feasible in some situations with these projectors. It looks like it also might be easy to just insert an LCD flashlight in place of the projector light source. Has anyone/could anyone try doing this and see if it works? I wouldn't expect it to be the best, but with one of those bright compact LED torches and a dark room on a white screen, I could imagine a picture showing up.
If this works, a fully portable battery operated projector would totally be possible.
Any takers? Or do I need to wait until I make mine to try it?

i've got a stripped 2.5" hip gear screen here that is already wired up for audio and video via rca cables.

Here are my results after a few days with a Myron and Davis 7" LCD(1440x234res) This is 100" diagnal screen with a 175 watt halide. I used 2 page mags and a Kwik Kopy projector lens. The edges are a little dark but i think that's from the tube the lens sits in.(5" long) I'll post some pics of the inside after i'm all done building.🙂 Let me know what you guys think.
