I got a bulb...
I got a 400w MH bulb for 30USD- 4000K - 20,000hour life- i got the smallest casing they had, and it's universal pos. not a bad deal. they also had the really small MH bulbs with dual end connectors- they even had the same color temp- 4000k, but 150W max. they could fit into my palm, but they don't emit near enough light, and are 60USD/ bulb- they would work perfectly for embedding them into the acryllic resin though.
here's info on my bulb- http://www.astralux.net/html/pdf/us/hlve/HVLE_400_A_A350-401760_US.pdf
i have yet to get a ballst for it which is 60USD

Re: I got a bulb...
Your bulbs sound great! where did you buy them from, do they have a website? my current DYS setup is small too its about the size of my thumb bt WAY too hot those reduced MH's would be perfect for my setup.Do you need a special ballast for them?
**EDIT** i've found some reduced jacket MH bulbs but i do not know its size or naything else about it http://www.1000bulbs.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=296
Thanks

wait, i didn't get the smallest bulbs, i got the reduced jacket one, which is still quite large. Its dimensions are 8.8cm diameter, and a 21.1cm length- the small ones were about 4.5" in length with a diameter of about 1/3"-1/2"- The store, Bulbs Unlimited (no website, sorry), had only 150w max in that format, so you would need 3 of them, and they're about 60 bucks a piece, compared to my larger bulb at 30. plus, u'd need three ballast for each bulb- it'd still take up some space. I am happy with it though- i saw the comparison with the standard size Mh 400w bulb they had, and it was much larger. I did get the ballast today, 60 bucks, and a ceramic socket good for 400w-1500w max, which was under 5 bucks. i just need to get the damn wiring done . if it sucks, i might consider getting a couple of those smaller ones.
I found some of that clear resin i could use for a light guide, but it is somewhat expensive, and i saw a much cheaper price on the net. anyway, keep y'all posted...

your setup sounds good if its as small as i think it is then i could fit it in my OHP 😀
goodluck with your project and feel free to keep updating

How about a square bank of these
http://www.bulbs.com/products/product_detail.asp?page=products&inventory=8235
completely filling the bottom of a gutted OHP?
A fresnel or similar could be placed above to straighten the light. The OHP's fresnel could take care of the rest.

If it were to come to that, how about a bank of these:

mounted right up against the LCD panel?

What is your gut reaction?
Go out on a limb....trust your instinct if it isn't going to cost you the rent.

2 good 2 be true?
i really dont like creating new threads so i will post this here since its pretty much dead any ways. as usual i'v been doing research on lights ( as stated in the very 1st post 🙂 ) and i've come across an amAziNG site http://www.lampman.co.uk/javastuf/bindex.htm
thanks to ALCHEMIST. if this site is legit and IF they ship to US then this will solve ALOT of problems! (mainly LIGHT problems)
they have 250 HQI bulbs whichs are basically the same price as DIYlabs BUT they claim to have 250 watt ballast for....17.40!!! BUT this is in UK currency..i dont know what that translates in USD. if this works then that would cut the cost by MORE than half!
ALCHEMIST said he paid 50( UK pounds) but he has 150 watt hqi. its still a great deal...i "MAY' even go 150 watts....im not sure what im getting yet.... any ways please tell me what do u think about this site?

http://www.lampman.co.uk/javastuf/bindex.htm
the 150w one it puts out between 10000-14000 lm's and its very small, great for a parabloic reflector design and eficient

hey ace, thanks for the reply. double huh....well its still a good deal 🙂 lol IF the ballast is really 17$
great choice, if u choose it let me know how it works ok.
yeah i seen your post on commercial projectors there some good points there...maybe u can retrofit one ...one day 😉 lol

yeah thats it but they are abit hot, in one page i read that u need a sealed enclosure to suport 1200c of temp lol but then u can get others that are protected from shatering and they can go in a open light box so we will see, i personal think they are great cos they are atleast 1000lm brighter than a standard type mh and so much smaller, would be good for an ohp retro fit as u say and i supose if u bought one with a reflector u are set, aparently there are a wide range of feflector for these lights so the possibility could be endles

have you seen this site? http://members.cox.net/rolm/update/ (u probably have since its VERY popular with the retrofitting crowd)
th 150 watt HQI would be good but im afraid it will be less powerful than my current setup which is 17,000 lm (halogen) and the site doesnt give too much info on color rating and life and etc.
u said they're hot? well i dont think its hotter than my halogen ( i hope not lol)
yes my ohp has a relfector its the EXACT same OHP as in the website i posted above.

yeah they are hot but its the glass of the bulb thats hot not the light, the light should be about half of the temp from a halogen, that bulb in that site is too big for the reflector, i would go a single ended like the one im looking at, i did see on some site that there are high pres murcury that are at 4000k temp colour, now alot have said they are too blue or pink, but did they check to see the colour temp of the bulb? lol anyway i did see a 250w single ended bulb that put out about 20 000lm from memory so ill have alook now for ya
