Speaker design project for Pyromusicals

OK I have gotten the go ahead to make tapped horns, but I need to try and use the speakers we have. Could someone sim a Kappa Pro-15A in a SS15 box for me so I can see how good it mite be? thanks Andy

I thought you sold the omega 18's to buy 3015lf's? The kappa 15a is NOT a sub and should never be considered for sub use. Buy the 3015lf's or if you are set on something other than neo-magnet, buy the 4015lf. I repeat -- do not use the kappa 15a's in a sub.

On tops, just a standard 15+2 with your psd driver, just make sure you get a 90degree wide horn to cover the spread you want. The medium or small vented box options from eminence gets you what you want I believe.

Kappa's aren't bad, they just aren't subs. They also are not that interesting of a top driver to go to a lot of trouble designing a custom top. Just put them in a ported cabinet suggested by eminence, and be happy.

The kappa's run out of xmax at only 50watts (20v) That's why they are not subs.
I would REALLY encourage you to download hornresp and start doing the sims for yourself.. it's worth it to learn it.

Hi 4pyros,

For what it's worth, this is what I get:

The 3015LF will take Eg=56 V before reaching Xmax in the passband. The Kappa Pro-15A reaches Xmax @ Eg=12.6V.

Regards,

Thanks for the double check oliver.... For some reason I thought I remembered 4pyro's had the stamped steel kappa 15a's, not the kappa pros. (I went back and reread the first post in this thread.... duh... should have done that before posting)

4pyro's, the link I sent you for eminence cabinets was for the 15a's, not the pro 15a's.... when you are ready to build tops, please check into the correct suggested cabinets.

You are correct the kappa pro's are even more of a dedicated mid-bass, vs the cheaper 15a, and take even less power before hitting xmax (3.2mm) in a sub app -- and have the response you posted.

Thanks for correcting my faulty memory.

Hello mates,

I forget that I promised to send sim.. so to keep my word it is here.

But however booth CB's are larger than SS15 and will consume more plywood.

Respect to mr. jbell for great idea and realization of single sheet bass project!! This makes simple and excellent solution especially if speaker builder is on tight budget as value/performance ratio combined with plywood sheet usage is close to 100%

Best wishes,
Stipe

Gentelman; I have spent the last few weeks speccing and ordering all the pieces parts that will make up this sound system. I now have the 3015LF and its almost time to make saw dust but.........................

I still like the idea of having the speaker on the bottom of the box like in Anders THAM15 but no one has been able to tell me if it is good or bad compared to hanging the speaker from the top like in Jims SS15. Any thoughts on this. I would just like the bottom of the box to be as strong as posible for touring. Thay may get thrown around a bit from time to time.
Any thoughts on this? Andy

Put a metal grill on the front. Once done, the botom is as strong as if there were another piece of ply on front, like in anders cabinet.

You can always use 3/4" if you would like on the bottom panel.

Thanks Jim; I am sure that would work fine but it still does not satisfy my curiosity. I hate not knowing things and it will keep me up at night untill I know witch is better top or bottom mounting for the speaker in a tapped horn. Andy

Top or bottom doesn't matter... I've done both.

What DOES matter, is in the folding process, what parallel surfaces do you have, and what standing resonances at what frequency are you creating? Are they helpful or hurtful?

One of the keys in my mind to the SS15's success in terms of tone, is that there are almost no parallel surfaces to create destructive resonances. There is also the little matter of why the 40-60hz response differs from hornresp -- but I guess that'll just be a mystery for now...

Just so you know I have no prejudice top vs bottom -- Here's a bottom cabinet that I did... the ss15 kicks it's butt, in a smaller cabinet too, and at 1/3rd the weight.
