Working backwards
Hi,
I decided to build a pair of NP F2 amplifiers for use with some non-existant full-range speakers. So then I bought a pair of Alpair 10 FR speakers. Finally I started looking round for a cabinet design.
I have looked at the Jaguar design which seems to be the simplest to start with, but I have been reading the Saburo vs DTB thread and I was wondering if there was anything similar for the Alpair 10s?

To be honest I do not know. I have built OBs, LinkwitzOrions, Gedlee Abbeys and others. If I was to say that I have always loved a lot about horns (I did have Lowther Acousta's at one time) and heard various corner horns (Tannoys and Klipsch) but the one speaker that sticks in my mind is the Klipsch La Scala which I loved - so what I have been after is something with that life - but without the attendant cabinet resonances.Scottmoose said:Not at present. Exactly what is it you're wanting to achieve, sonically?
I am not too bothered about the frequency extremes and I have always prefered a slight lack of bass to bass boom and slightly dull top end to tizz.
The mid-band has to be excellent and the depth of image (both ways) is wanted.
Music - just about anything (I have found my tastes expanding as the front end keeps on improving) - rock, classical, jazz etc.
Volume - I do occasionally like to listen to music fairly loudly (room is 5 meters by 3 meters) - but I prefer dynamics to overall loudness.
So - it should be simple to satisfy those criteria!!

Your description of improvements sounds very similar to personal reviews i have seen from customers with FE206eN (and FE206eSReN). The phase plugs that are part of this treatment also deal with the resonance inside the whizzer cone. Mike might want to try some -- expert woodworker he should be able to whip some up easily..
I expect there are a whole bunch of potential receipes that go a long way to sorting the issaues inherent in the stock drivers -- from all accounts Steve Deckard's is another.
Soaking in or sitting on top both have pluses and minuses and balancing them is part of the art of treating a cone.

Hello Dave!
I'm not too surprised that the improvements of Mike's treatment are very similar to personal reviews you've seen from customers with FE206eN and FE206eSReN, because amongst other things his treament also specifically addresses the problems that the EnABL process was created to address.
IIRC and I may be mistaken, I believe Mike has mixed feelings about using phase plugs. If I remember what he told me and again I may be mistaken, I believe Mike's contention is the greater evil of a whizzer lies in the reflections that keep bouncing back and forth between the front of the cone and the rear of the whizzer. Perhaps he feels whatever he does to ameliorate this problem also addresses the resonance inside the whizzer cone?
I honestly don't know what Mike's thoughts are on this issue and would suggest anyone who'd like to know Mike's true thoughts on this should email him and ask him specifically what his thoughs are on this matter.
I'm quite sure you're correct Dave that there are a whole bunch of potential receipes that go a long way to sorting the issues inherent in the stock drivers. I'm also sure each treatment has their own unique set of pluses and minuses. I hope someday we can get together and compare a driver with Mike's treatment to an EnABL treated driver. I've heard that Steve Deckard's has a treatment but, until 2 days ago didn't know anyone who used or owned his speakers. However a member of the SETriodes forum on Yahoo just received a pair of Decware HDT speakers so I'll be hearing about the sonic qualities of Steve's speakers soon!
I know that Mike believes that treatments that sit on top of a cone are inferior to those that soak in. He tried to explain why but, it got technical and I lost interest with the explination. Personally I think you and Mike should exchange emails. Dave I believe you'd find his POVs interesting even if you don't agree with everything he says or believes. Perhaps you two could even work out either a temporary or permanent exchange of a pair of EnABL FE206E for pair of his treated FE206E? That way you could both make direct comparisons of the two treatments in your own cabinets, while using audio components your intimately familair with, in rooms whose sonic effects you know well! Who knows maybe the best treatment is a combination of the two different treatments?

Dave,
I'm curious as to why the "Harvey, Iris, and Bruce" plans were removed in your latest update?to the Spawn Family Plans page?

I meant to add a note: A significant update to the Spawns plan pages was uploaded day before yesterday.
Superceded designs that some might still feel appealing (and a couple that might be useful but have never really reached completion) were moved to an archive page. Designs that we were not happy with removed, and a whack of new Mark Audio designs consilidated in one place (some but not all have been scattered thru the forums)
Next we need to tackle the Spawn intro page, and then try to nail down Frugal-Horn Mk II.

Thanx for the QC, the link in the navigation panel works, the one at the bottom suffered from my "allstar" typing skills, i have fixed it.

WOW! A lifetime of exciting designs. Windermere^2 just looks incredible. Dang, I was almost caught up on my projects, and now this.
P.S. Glad that Harvey is still available.

whew, that seemed like a cute idea at the time, but do you have any idea how hard it was to actually type?
BTW, for those who haven't had the privilege to work with Dave, that's really how he thinks 😉

BVR question
What is the audible difference between a short tapered vent and a long tapered vent ? Les Hudson

What is the audible difference between a short tapered vent and a long tapered vent ? Les Hudson
that would probably depend on the length, aspect ratio and flare angle of the vent
specifics
I should have been more specific. Within the Spawn of Frugle family there are BVRs with short tapered ports and ones with long tapered ports. What is the difference.

Just like a bass reflex will have different size ports based on driver Fs, Qts, Vas, and the length/cross section and tuning of the box, so do the BVRs.

Mr. Geek,
Those of us that aren't close to him (the "Auslanders") just refer to him as Mr. Ten. The use of first names violates the formality, that those of us with a proper upbringing must insist upon.
Just a gentle reminder.

Dear sir: methinks this is where your otherwise flawless logic fails the reality test.
Fortunately for us all, "mrD" , a familiarity which my symbiot designation permits, has a robust sense of humor
