Re: A Picture Of The Sachiko I Had Built
Tom,
Before their debut make sure you get at least a 100 hours on the drivers... get em cookin' 🙂

Dave that's already been taken care of. At my request Jeff Carder of CarderSound previously installed the FE206Es in another pair of Madison speakers he had while he was building my pair so I believe they'll be pre-broken in! Although I don't know precisely how many hours they have of them ---{I'll be writing Jeff as soon as I finish this post}--- I fiqure they must have quite a few hours on them by now as I ordered these in mid-April.
I want to be clear that Jeff wasn't slow building these! We had two different issues that came up. #1) we had to wait to get nice Rosewood pieces of veneer and #2) Jeff had a personal situation that came up. Jeff informed me of the situation and I fully understood his desire to resolve it. So I voluntarily offered to wait until he did so just to make things easier for him! Plus who wants to have the person building your speakers rush or have his mind on other issues?
Jeff's a great guy and I highly recommend him as a source of having these built "IF" like me, the person cannot build these speakers for themselves.

Hello gychang! They are being delivered tomorrow and as I stated in an earlier posts I'll be having about 8 people over my home in a small joint SETriodes Forum/ Central Florida Audio Society meeting to audtion the Madisons as they make their Florida debut!
I'll post an update on their sound as soon as I have a handle on what it is...

Hi everyone
As a newbie to this forum, I now realise I should have been here a year ago when I bought my Wilmslow Labyrinths
- totally the wrong cabinet/material for the 206e as I have since found out.
I now favour building the Sachiko or Chang (Curvey or otherwise) and order the phase plugs from Dave.
Alan, I see you used B&Q for your ply, I would appreciate any advice you can impart on your experience as I am in your neck of the woods.

I used Great Western Rd B&Q. Their ply was good and free of voids. Each sheet had a varying number of processed areas on the surface presumably where there were knots or flaws.
I got B&Q to do the long cuts - "reasonably accurate", then piled the stuff into the car and did the rest at home. If I was doing it again I would probably pay a joiner to do more accurate cuts for me.
I made the 3-sheet version of Sachiko with the angled deflectors (I was not sold on the "stepped" deflectors, and the interiors were painted black anyway). nb There is a version 2 of the plans with a revised angle for these.
You can see my build process at Sachiko Build Album
Happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability - I'm also new to this game ...
Dear planet10,
I had built the early Harvey-10 using Fostex FE126E.
The throat size I am using at the exit of the compression chamber is 1" wide which is splitting into two 3/4" wide channel:
As I recently find that in the newer version in:
http://homepage.mac.com/tlinespeakers/FH/download/Harvey-1v1-map.pdf
The exit of the compression chamber shold be 3/8" wide splitting into two 1/2" wide. Do you think it is a good idea to reduce my 1" gap in to the 3/8" gap.
Should I do anythink to reduce the two 3/4" outlet into 1/8" (still thinking how can I do so)
Thanks and best regards

Scott is the one to really answer that question, but i think you'll be OK. The mods were primarily to make the one cabinet handle more drivers (ie CSS FR125SR)

An Update
As I've stated previously I received a pair of CarderSound Madisons aka Sachiko last Saturday 6/7/08. At that time I was asked to comment on the sound by gychang and I replied I'd post an update on their sound as soon as I have a handle on what it is.
The initial delivery was attended by Jeff Carder himself and 8 other members of either SETriodes Group, Central Florida Audio Society or Space Coast Audio Society. Unfortunately those who attended didn't hear the Madisons at their best. There's a couple of reasons for this:
#1) After everyone left on Saturday I was exhausted and listened only briefly. There was something about the soundstage and imaging that bothered me but, I was too tired to try and resolve the issue. On Sunday I had a very good friend from the Central Florida Audio Society visit. As we listened I noticed the "problems" with the soundstage & imaging was it had a hole-in-the-middle effect. That lead to my discovering these cabinets are VERY room sensitive. In my room to get optimum performance from them they need to be approx 22" from my rear wall, 3ft from my side walls & approx. 8ft apart. This setup greatly increased the center fill and expanded the soundstage to beyond both speakers. I then placed ---{actually Mike did because I'm disabled}--- them completely straight ahead and toed them in very slowly until at a toe-in of only about 1" maybe 2" at most, the best results in soundstaging & imaging were produced. The final change was to lean them ever so slightly forward ---{I haven't tried leaning them back yet but I will}--- and BAM! Everything just gelled.
#2) After Mike left I noticed from continued listening there was a shhhhhh sound emanating from both speakers. It turns out my Mazada "chrome-plates" 6189 tubes had become quite noisey ---{I suppose after 5 years that's to be expected}--- so I pulled out that pair and installed a pair of my spare NIB/NOS Mazdas and everything just got clearer and quieter.
All I can say is this. I've never, ever been happier with my system. These speakers, like my Mastersound Reference 845, are a final purchase for me. The Mastersound Reference with the CarderSound Madisons has brought my system to a level where I just cannot stop listening to it. It's just so harmonically, tonally and dynamically right that everything else now sounds wrong to me. My wife even come in sat next to me later that night after Mike left and we actually started singing to each other while listening to the music. It's honestly that emotionally involving.
For me going to this single full range speaker design is for speakers what going to an SET amp was for amplifiers. Both of these components are just so damn right in how they replicate music, that one has to be heard it to understand what's wrong with everything else! The trouble is that once you've heard it you have to have it! As for me I just cannot stop smiling! IMO CarderSound speakers are highly recommended. Scott you're my audio savior. My system is at level I've never heard anywhere else before and I couldn't imagine ever going back to what it was. Combining the Mastersound with the Madisons is sonically like taking the best, most realistic photograph you've ever seen and having it transformed it into a hologram.

Re: An Update
You better not listen to a set of FE206eN in those then 😀

Dave I have a pair of Fostex FE206ES-Rs that are NIB. Are you stating the FE206EN is even better than those are? Or is it just better than the FE206E? What do the FE206EN cost for a pair?

Re: Re: Re: An Update
I've not had the opportunity to go head to head with the 206eSR, but i'm hoping the 206eN is better -- it will have to be to justify the required retail price -- it will have a bit of an edge in your cabs as they were designed for 206. It is certainly better than the 206.
Retail price is as yet undertermined but will be north of $400/pr. Currently we are shipping special order/beta units. Contact me privately about price for those. I am doing up Jeff's 1st pair of those as we speak. He has already had 126eN and a pair of 166eN should be landing on his door shortly.

Re: An Update
Believe me when I say, hearing something like this makes my day. I'm delighted you like them -Jeff's craftsmanship is superb too. I hope they continue to give you pleasure for a long time to come -trying to help each other is why we're all here, & I'm just glad if I can help out in my small way.

As I continue to estatically enjoy my system with the Madisons I have a developed a couple of questions:
1) Do these require any type of baffle step correct?
2) Do you think that placing the acoustic lens that JBL used in their Hartsfield speaker in front of the FE206e would be a good idea? The reason I ask this is although it's not well known the Hartsfield was originally also offered as a "starter" system in the early years that could later be upgraded to the full-blown Hartsfield everyone knows. This starter Hartsfield system used a single 8" D208 speaker operating in full range. The speaker was mounted immediately behind the "Koustical Lens" and JBL used a duct to back load the driver into the bass horn section. Here's a link to where it explains about JBL's Hartsfield speaker using the lens with a single full range 8 in driver. http://www.audioheritage.org/html/profiles/jbl/hartsfield.htm
So as JBL themself has used this lens in front of a 8" single full range driver with some success. I was wondering if that might not be a viable option with the Madisons? I fiqure I can try it and if I don't like the results I could always sell the lens! Still I'm curious what you guys think about this option?

No, and God knows are the answers, respectively. Not having ever looked into these JBL lenses, and knowing almost nothing about them, I haven't the faintest idea, although from a quick gander, I have my doubts.
Somebody built (an apparent) Curvy Chang cab for the July 12 2008 Dayton DIY event. I don't recognize the driver but could it be a phase-plugged Pioneer B-20?)
