Sony vFET Amplifier Part 2

Where did you see this? (I'm not complaining, since I'm actually going this year. 🙂 )

Cheers,
Dennis

Hi Dennis

You are lucky Diyer 😀

BurningAmp : The annual audio DIY event at Fort Mason, San Francisco CA for audiophiles who make their own equipment, components for amps, speakers, and parts.

Hi Antoinel
Not original data sheet from Sony
power dissipation is around 100 watts.
One of the ways is try ask Mr Rothacher
at How To Contact Me | Audiohobby.com
first hand vfet data from laboratory bench
of diyers friendly famous oncle Mike garantie.

Kind regards 🙂

Thank you soundhappy for your advice to contact Oncle Rothacher, and the tabulated data which show the desired Absolute Maximum Ratings.

Soundhappy:

Is this REAL? I've held off from building the SE due to insufficient power. If this kit is really available, I will line up for it. Will the vFETs be E- or F-rank? Will they be matched? Any idea on pricing?

Thanks!

Update

Had more fun with the amps today.

I would recommend a higher voltage transformer say 22vac. If you have say 33vdc rails it gives you the option of adjusting the voltage on each side of the outputs to match the harmonic spectrum of each amp. This could also be done with parts matching but since parts are scares it gives a similar ability to match.

I was looking at the harmonic spectrum of each amp and one had more second harmonic than the other. So I adjusted the voltage of the output section to match them and it was a nice improvement.

Soundhappy - thank you, very intriguing. I guess it's 40W into 4 Ohm using 2 VFET pairs per channel.

Botte - thinking through the PSU, I am planning to use a 1kVA Variac to power both channels running the 4 bridge rectifiers feeding 2 cap banks. This gives me the slow smooth power up and rail voltage adjustability. Any thoughts on this approach?

Thanks, gents, can't wait 'til the kits arrive.

Very Excite!

Very excited about this! Many thanks to Nelson, 6l6 and team for providing this opportunity. Looking forward to buying a kit.

Nelson, I saw and heard your commemorative 40th Anniversary VFet amp at RMAF, it was quite amazing and makes a really cool story. I mean how many people can say they built something out of history and gave it to Sony!. Very classy move sir.

Cheers

We have enjoyed a happy relationship with the people at Sony, and when
I came into possession of a stock of Sony VFETs, I decided that one good
use for them was to create the 40th anniversary amplifiers. At one point I
was asked why we would want to do this, and the answer was:

Because we can.
