So i impulse bought a sub. What would you do with it?

my woofer has a measured qes of .71 and works excellent in a tapped horn because vas;sd ratio is so low. qts will only cause the middling frequencies to go down and the fb to go up and it will also lose overall sensitivity. i have checked this repeatedly. now, using a smaller woofer like an 8, your vas needs to be larger, like 10-15L this i dont have an answer for. i guess because they are so small that they basically have no efficacy.

Anything will excite a resonace in a vented box. But then flop around in it (high damping factor) when not feeling that pressure?

I hate the way this sounds except when in resonace. There is no thump. It’s all thud.

high q could make gd a few ms longer. all i can tell you is my woofer with .71 qes placed inches from my back and x'd @80hz sounds exceptional to my ears, ESPECIALLY in the kick drum region. My wife even said so and she rarely appreciates my acoustic endevors. i sometimes hear a slight discontinuity between bass and subbass frequencies depending on the track, but this compromised hasnt bothered me because overall it is quite musical. i have yet to hear the painful ringing at x3 fb youve lamented about.

Reactions: Booger weldz
maybe some of the Paraflex designs are a lot worse because there’s a phase discontinuity mixed in between group delay and a lingering (long decay ) pipe resonace in the good notes of a bass guitar or similar?

A strange turd is floating in the punch bowl?

It was likely a multiple of the cabin resonace and made the sunroof go nuts
I would suggest removing the variables. Vehicles are giant metal cans of various thin and undampened materials making contact. Of course it makes noise. Of all the discerning ears whove listened to tapped horns i have yet to hear anyone have as much of a problem with their sound. If youre the only one, it might be something besides the design itself.

It’s a folded transmission line with another ‘resonator’ at the end of it that just further excites the three-quarter resonace? It’s just making things sound strange. This isn’t my opinion, it’s just reality and well understood ?

If you want to pretend it sounds good because it’s loud I won’t disagree. I think it’s as interesting as you do no doubt. But it’s still weird.

The people with discerning ears don’t bother with these designs. They already understand that they sound strange. You and I are ‘mad scientists’ and still interested for whatever reason I suppose?😀

Soooo, unfortunately i tried to build the largest box i could fit in my truck and it wont fit 😆. I could probably make it fit but im not that ambitious. i really love it in my ht. Wayy overkill. i have to turn it down 12db just to get it close to the rest of my system and its still boosted but its perfect. Nothing wrong with headroom! Ill see about getting some measurements but i am not doing groundplane. Sorry. Im sick of moving this thing. I can do some mouth measurements and room if anyone is interested. But thats the best i can do!

I love the sound of it. Its very impactful, digs deep, and loads the room with bass. There is a significant amount of group delay so i wouldnt consider it an sq woofer, but i have no problem being critical of my projects. Personally i think it sounds very good and the only time i notice GD, when not being critical, is during certain chords of bass. For movies and bass heavy music this thing is an absolute monster and i think it sounds great on heavy metal. I am a big fan of meshuggah but i often feel like the kick was never mixed with enough impact in their music. This cab is definately tuned to bring out the kick with a spike @74hz. Concert level impact is no problem. I would love to see how this compares to ricci's cabs like othorn and gjallarhorn since i had considered making those. Othorn is 3cf larger and less extension and gjallarhorn is 6-7cf larger with better extension. I imagine othorn has more output capability and less GD. Othorn is more complex to build. this cab works for any subwoofer with a displacement of about 1800-4000cm3, a vas between 40-90L, and a Qts of .3-.7.
Side note, even though i modeled this using bp8s in hornresp i consider this a bp7s because there is no chamber volume for vc2.
