I have a Diablo 300 at the moment which works exactly that way and stays in class A when driving sensitive speakers like the Wilson and the Amati.

This i very much doubt. The Diablo is excellent, clear and fast but not sufficiently biased to maintain class A in the low impedances Wilson present at certain frequencies. Remember that a 5W class A bias sufficient for 8ohm speakers only provides 2.5W into 4 and 1.25W into 2ohms.

I though it was class A biased at least for the first 15-20W. Nobody really knows, Gryphon doesn't give away any info on that but the fact that it uses 200W of power without any signal suggests that it is highly biased. I wonder if there is an easy way to determine what class it is in.

Not sure but when I had a Mcintosh amp for a short time, the blue meters very rarely went past even the 1W mark. Of course they are not accurate and they don't take the impedance dips into account and they just show the peaks but at least they gave me a rough idea.

You can measure the power consumption when applying a sine wave to the input and connecting an appropriate load at output. The moment the consumption exceeds 200W is when it leaves class A.

It is also easy to obtain a ballpark figure from the published specs. It is quite sufficient that we know the rated power @8ohms and the idle power consumption.

300W/8ohms suggests rails in the region of 80v. 100W dissipation at idle per channel means 600mA of idle current, or 5.8W class A rms into 8ohms. Correspondingly half that into 4 and still half into 2, or something like 1.5 - 2W in the regions where the Wilsons dip.

I use beautiful looking and heavy Pioneer M-22 Class A amp with my W/P 5.1. Female vocals and bass is very nice reproduced

Was anyone able to find the ScanSpeak 18w/4545-01 and can anyone confirm if it is a modified by Wilson version? One of my Wilson WP6 drivers died the other day and that's the number I found under the Wilson sticker. I believe Wilson sells them but for about $400 apiece.
 
Whereas you could have them repaired for $40 a piece. You are probably located Stateside, but here in the Netherlands one of the more professional repair oufits, having close contacts with Scan Speak (+Dynaudio, Vifa and Seas), did many a WA woofer repair for 1/10 (or less) of the WA offering. Welcome to the bussiness model of WA. If you have the basket+magnet assembly, any cone, voicecoil, surround or spider can be replaced for some hands full of bucks by a competent repair outfit. Many of those are Dr. Kurt Muller components.

You can't get 18W/4545-01 anywhere, only at Wilson Audio, it was especially made for Wilson. But you can feed in 18W/4545-00 it sounds awesome direct out of the box. With burning-in in about 50-100 hours it will sing even better. Here you can hear my brand new installed 18W/4545-00. They sound very very nice in WATT 5.1. I got them brand new (NOS)couple a days ago, paid under €400,- for two!! Very hard to get it this days, cos' it's discontinued at Scan Speak.

The Voice Coil lead(s) has corroded underneath the glue that runs down the cone through the spider to the coil. It's a common issue related to all of these skan speak models.
Whatever you do DO NOT damage / destroy or throw away these drivers they are irreplaceable and can be repaired relatively easily by someone with patience and dexterity.
