Hi Chris,,,
Seems I'm taking a long route to revive this Sansui,, but I have lots of time to play with it... The little tuner is feeding the Sui now, and it sounds great... I traced B+ out of the AM/FM switch and Its not getting to the AM board,, If I'm IDing them right...
Looking for a service manual now...

Hey! Nothing wrong with that.
I think you're on the right track. I have seen wires broken near the solder connection but it still hangs onto the PCB or switch. Trust nothing! lol!

HA, thanks,,, You have the right guy for "trusting nothing" !!!!
I can also see swapping tuner FM/MPX and lamp driver into Sansui,,, but that would be cheating!!
These boards look like same material and Ge transistors as the Sui,,, Tuner is a Realistic/Rat Shack,, so its also made in Japan,,, maybe Sui???? IDK

I always liked that industrial look Pioneer, Allied and RS used back then.
Nice little tuner John. I like that it has an output level control.

Its really nice,,, I wonder who actually made it? It even has some of those 2SC458 transistors that hiss like teh sui had.... they dont bother me tho,,, kinda like record noise from the old days!!!
Back then I don't know. Allied maybe? I guess Fostek could have been producing equipment for RS that early on.
Yep,,, someone just said it could have been Pioneer that made it,, as they made stuff for RS around then,,, I was in the service, so I dont know!!! Its from 68-71 according to Radiomuseum,,, so its same time as the Sansui...
Right on! It lives!!
RS bought from OEMs, and ther ewas always speculation as to who made what. I've worked on a lot of it over the years, some better than others.

Just wait till those C458’s start producing thunder instead of just hiss. It might launch a woofer cone across the room. They get bad enough and they produce massive DC shifts along with the zener diode quantities of white noise. That would make it like a warped LP.Its really nice,,, I wonder who actually made it? HA...still waiting for my 800s 458s to start hissing, I got it new in 69, and recapped it a dozen years ago.,

Yep,,, switches were dirty, probably from sitting for a long time... and 4 outta 7 lamps were out also, but I had them.... I'll have to replenish my supply now, tho!!! I read RS had different makers of gear, guessing it was who would make it cheapest at the time,,, Sears did the same thing,, but the first 3 digits of the Sears model number IDs the builder,,,, Kinda easy to see who made what,,
The 2SC458 is known, well known, to become noisy, then even fail. If it is in a location followed by high gain you're in for trouble.
I would simply replace them before they get you. Luckily there are plenty of love noise NPN transistors available. This is kind of like not changing your oil in your car. It will seem to run fine for ages - until it doesn't. I'm a practicing technician and have always replaced these things when I see them. Not because of what is on the web, I learned before there was a web.

Who made what was very random with RS. Don't bother trying to figure it out. Mind you, similar circuits in the same time era may be close or even exact, so no harm in finding those on a case by case basis.
Makes sense,, but this isn't going to be used much here, I refinished the Walnut case also,,, I'll just pass it on to someone that wants to play with it,,, I did replace the 458s in the 400,tho,,,The 2SC458 is known, well known, to become noisy, then even fail. Update,, I got the 458s and a bunch of out of value caps replaced in the Realistic tuner,,, It is quiet,, pulls in and locks stations great,, separation is excellent,,, and its cute as a kitten!!!!
Just getting back to the Sansui after a few months absence,,, starting with the service manual recommendations which include most of the lytic caps in the FM, MPX and Pre amp/amp ckts... I can't get good reading in place so I've been removing them to test,,,, Most are pretty far out of value so far so replaced them, but there are a lot more to test/replace... Starting with caps I have on hand first. and can then make a list of what's needed as I go,,, schem values aren't always correct!

Hi knockbill,
I'm happy to hear your tuner is working well again.
Great, and you're right. Service manuals often have incorrect values.
Yes, out of circuit testing is the only vald way to check these parts. You never know what is in parallel. If you pull it, replace it. Check to get an idea what the rest might be like. But seldom on good brands do you need to change a lot of coupling caps and things like that. Some brands - yeah, change them all.

The tuner is running great,, it sounds good with the Sansui also,,, may have to scab it in!!!
I just checked/replaced 3 more caps (Elnas) on the Sui MPX board,,, all tested way over value so far,,, This will take a while as I imagined, and I dont have all the values here,,, got about 10 more on this board...
I'm still hoping to get to a shorted one that lets the Stereo work, so I know I'm not wasting my time!!!
