Likely they are expecting you to use digital through HDMI or display port. What motherboard are you running?
Could a HDMI port be an option?
HDMI is composite video/audio. They sell "extractors" to derive spdif/toslink.
To integrate this into a DAC would be problematic 😱 (lot of chips).
Better to just buy an external converter from china.
Jeff , my MB is a ASUS M5A97 R2.0 , not "new - new" , but 2013. Even
the older core duo MB you gave me ... also toslink.
Only my daughters old P945 intel is coax SPDIF ... my wifes old HP athlon
refurbished ... also spdif.
So , 2010 onward is toslink ....
OS
Toslink can be converted to coax 😀
Same thing .. Toslink is just optical SPDIF. Cheap 10$ converters from china
for this , as well.
OS
Sounds good, lets see what you guys come up with.
So far i read,
PitchFork feature set.
1) spdif receiver
2) stereo dac
3) stereo analog source selector
4) stereo volume control
5) stereo headphone, line amp
6) Control/display
7) power supply
All in one box/size?
What music source do you mostly listen too?
USB Input ? (Switched via spdif or I2S )
You might vary well be buying from Asia. i just looked a Mouser for Toslink rx, only one available is torx1952(F) running only at 5V = stupid and your wm8804(5)/cs8416 is 3.3V.Same thing .. Toslink is just optical SPDIF. Cheap 10$ converters from china

I can not believe today, Toshiba still has their lock on this i/f and lousy availability.
USB input for control or as a audio codec?USB Input ? (Switched via spdif or I2S )
I do not think the designers want a usb codec feature.
Uno has a usb link used as a virtual rs232 serial port, so that would be one of your ext control means.
but if they do here is one route to take,
I used a pcm2902b usb codec and FT232RL for control on my portable unit,
Both worked as advertized, but i did not have a dedicated DAC. I used the pcm2902b int dac. It sounds okay. But I am sure it would sound way better to use the pcm2902b spdif out and feed it into a spdif rx channel to the ext DAC.
I have read there is a way to run DSD over USB. I do not know many details and I only own 1 SACD.
I had a thought to make a Cirrus preamp, using CirrusLogic parts in all major blocks.
wm8805,cs4398,cs3318
What music sources do everyone listen to in %? For me it is,
1) FM radio 95% of the time
2) PC linked to pcm2902b, 3%
3) CD/SACD player 2%

USB to I2S or to SPdif. PCM2706, CM108 (SPDIF, I2S) - 48Khz/16bit max. Or CM6631A, Xmos, for 192Khz/24bit.
1. PC linked to CM6631A 50%
2. SDCard (Wav File) DIY Sdcard wave player 50%

And your music sources are in %, CD, SACD, other high res digital format? Although 192k/24b is the best, how many sources actually use/distribute it? replacing a lib of hundreds of CD's is a crazy thought.
Having to load all your CD's onto disks/files, is time consuming enough, then having to queue them up for play = more time consumption? This is why I listen to FM radio so much. I have a few commercial free FM stations = lucky me. I do not have unlimited internal BW, so music streaming (Jango) is out for me.
CM6631A is an interesting part. I will have to get an account to look at the data sheet.
One other thing I had on the portable was a Rohm BU9458 USB codec. It is great for a party, you can load your tunes up on one USB stick and tunes for hours. Same issue, used its internal DAC, but an external DAC would improve the sound quality too.

I've got a little more designing done for the DAC board.
There's bi-coloured indicator LEDs to keep OS amused.
WM8805 Spidf in with selector jumpers for everything I could think of.
I've got a selectable auto mute function on the DAC with an external connection for a possible muting relay for the output of the preamp if needed. I think it will be fine just muting the DAC itself though.
I haven't added any provisions for directly connecting USB to the input of the DAC. Any USB audio around my house is usually crappy mp3s from somebody's phone so they could be fed in either analogue through a preamp in or via Spdif. I can add a proper USB input if anyone wants to run HDAudio files. Let me know if there's any interest.
Rsavas please let me know if there is anything that should be added to the DAC or WM8805 or anything else on it for advanced control. I'm not sure if you would want to select any options on the DAC via software or just decide in advance and set the jumpers.

I was surprised how little there is to choose from too. I think these are the right connectors. GP1FAV31RK0F SHARP Fiber Optic Receivers | 13M5056 | Newark element14 Canada
Good find with the Sharp part. See how much Toshiba is asking for their parts 10x = nuts.
PCM1794A(U1) pins 15,16 need to be reversed or nets swapped.
C10/11 shown as R's?
Ferrite beads in series with analog supply pins. How long are the wires to the PS?
Bulk Decoupling? of all supplies.
No R/c on pcm1794a reset pin?
This not a complete design review but a first pass.
It is possible to optionally use the wm8805 i/o pins (s/w mode) as the control of the pcm1794a. This will take the burden off the mcu. I always like to have access to h/w reset, if i/o pins are available.
o/p:
hold pcm17984a in reset and configure wm8805 pins for pcm1794a config, then release reset followed by mute on pcm1794a

jwilhelm,
I would like to see a usb solution that can take a usb input from a phone, desktop or any other source such as a memory stick. That would be a great addition.

For a memory stick it would need some sort of brain to read it. Phone or PC is easier. I'm not sure it's worth too much effort to play MP3 files though. It seems counter-productive to take the time to build a device to make things sound better, then play that garbage on it. 😀
Good catch on the reversed power nets.Good find with the Sharp part.

The WM8805 IOs are going to pin 2 on the jumpers. That extra feed to the reset makes it look confusing.
I think Os is still working on the supply designs. I'll let him decide what is needed for bulk capacitance. I'm trying to design mine so this is first in line on a backplane from the supplies. It would be a only a few inches away with a Mu-Metal divider.
The USB device I used, Rohm BU9458 can play loss-less WMA files but not wave on this rev.For a memory stick it would need some sort of brain to read it. Phone or PC is easier. Jeff can you tell the diff between 320kps .mp3, .wav, lossless .wma files? If you can tell the diff, i do not know how you can do it 🙂
JW,
These days storage space is cheap and anybody can store Wave or Flak files on their phones or other portable device. I think MP3 low rez will disappear like cassette tapes.

I hear clicks and harshness in any mp3 file I've ever listened to. My hearing is damaged so I hear differently than most people though. I'm kind of like a dog when hearing high frequencies.
