Only the 140-15D has the foam.
I suppose its possible to take them off but the trick they perform is improving vertical dispertion. Its a very simply idea but the higher the frequency being producted by the ribbon, the more concecentrated towards the center it is. This is done by the crude looking open cell foam. You'll also notice the taper on the foam - the thicker the foam gets the more HF content is blocked and so because of this taper the attenuation of frequencies is progressive towards the extremes of the ribbon.
Its there for a reason and is one of the selling points of the design, I wouldn't remove it despite being an aesthetics *****. 😀
I have foam that looks very similar, obtained from Earl Geddes. It's in my Unity horns and results in a depth of at least 30cm from the tweeter to the mouth. Attenuation of the higher frequencies (18-20kHZ), looks to be a 3-4dB. So I don't think attenuation is what's at play here. More likely, it acts as a prism to disperse the high frequencies, especially at the top and bottom edges of the ribbon, where defraction would be an issue.

I think you might well become disgusted with your ring tweeter then (in comparison to the RAAL). 😉

Yup.. I remember the pic *SOMEWHERE* in this thread. 😀 You actually used wood veneer for that one if I recall correctly.

Yes, that's exactly what I was getting at. Aleksandar calls it an acoustic lens.

I was hinting that it was a magnetosata vs. a dome tweeter in the KEF/Vistaton comparison. The mid/bass driver materials were also polar opposites - titianium vs. poly.
The differences between the two was stark. Not least the fact that I've never heard such great bass from a 4" driver before or since then.

..it looks like it behaves as both a "lossy" compression chamber for the lower freq. response and a vertical waveguide.
Chances are though that without the "pleats" of a normal true ribbon, most of the excursion (and lower freq. response) is at the center of the ribbon (more so than normal) - which in effect means the compression chamber isn't so "compressed" (..that and the fact that it is made from a lossy material).

Ah..now I get the: 😉 ..
Sixth time I've mentioned this now:
I've had a new cordless Microsoft keyboard for about a month now and I've got to say its absolute rank naffness.
I just read back a part of the thread and realised that there's a ton of missing letters. Its true that I don't know how to spell and form proper sentences because I spent most of school day behind the bike sheds smoking pot(true) but that proportion of mistakes is obscene and clearly keyboard related 🙄

Isn't a magnetostat another word for true ribbon ie. the Vistaton MHT 12 was a true ribbon?

Nope - its a planar.. and while it has a very low mass it also has high dampening via physical boundry connections at all edges of the diaphram. (..typically cleaner overall decay but later in time, more like a dome with lower mass and greatly restricted vertical dispersion.)
A true ribbon sounds different.

So is my noobness to ribbons apparent at all?

I have a logitec (works fine), but still have the problem and didn't smoke the ganja.
😱
..see, things could be worse. 😀

That's good because I swear down that I didn't have this twitching of the eye 10 years ago. 😀

No.. Its a *VERY* common mistake.. and you can blame it on the marketing dept.s of all these Co.s.
The only true ribbon that has edge dampening at all sides (obviously not front and back) is a (oops) *WOVEN* pleated ribbon. (..the pleated nature here is due soley to the basket weave appearance, in this sense it isn't "pleated" like normal true ribbons.) Apogee Acoustics used these, and I believe the ProAc "Future" loudspeakers used some from Veravox (which was I believe still a "re-badging" oem chinese driver).
Because of the additional dampening they sound something in-between a planar and a normal true ribbon.

Uh Oh.. So just how *many* drinks do you have to buy the ladies?
😀

Prof. Vatchev from Bulgaria is the maker of the ribbons with silicone dampening on edges. The same product was ( I believe it still is) sold in Germany as "Expolinear", in Italy and US ( at E-Speakers) as ATD "Le ribbon".
Frankly I didn't know it was also "Veravox".

Ah.. thats it ATD. Mon Graci!
I think though that there was a connection between Vervox and ATD.. but again, my memory isn't exactly "bit perfect". 😀

Buy them drinks? I'll have to try that one 🙂
Its usually a case of looking how late it, accessing the empty space next to me and then me buying myself enough drinks to take home anything. 😀
I'm a pretty selfish person, not with money or the likes but you could say a bit unrelenting in how I work, my schedules and just general give and take. I think if I ever hope to have a long term relationship I'll have to ditch my somewhat adolescent attitudes. I'm 27 and I'd say the average women I 'meet' would be very early 20's which says a lot regarding the meeting of suitable minds. Women tend to outgrow me in other words 😀
Bit like Doctor Phil this or the Jeremy Kyle show.

OK, a little misunderstanding. I say, your'e right, as I completely share the opinion of the importance of everything you've said about LF, but I was talking about other kind of realism, and tried to explain what things are important for what I'm talking about( the best I could in my cripled English)!. Of course that nobody wants the speaker where LF isn't doing exactly what you've just said, but I belive that we are well beyond that basic descriptions. I don't know if I can explain it shortly in English, but I'll try: Have the LF working as you've described, but you will still not get that my definition or the word <realism> because of it. All this wil ADD to what I had in mind, but It wouldnt be achieved by it, nor it will be lost without it. You're not a rookie and I'm not a rookie, so when I speak about the things I do, I assumed that everything you've said is understood between us as basic, and tried to lift the discussion about what I appreciate in sound, to a higher level, that disregards things that you already achieved. Huh...I really hope that I was clear now. This English is hard work...
As we agreed, I guess, on this...what are the other things you don't agree with? This other part is important.
Romeo, you missed this post. Any comments?

I didn't miss it 😉
I was just looking for points to disagree with you on in order to make it look like I know something about this hobby.
