Hi all,
the trafos for Germany finally arrived here.
When unpacking the very first one, I noticed that the potting material was cracked in a 2x4 cm area between the center mounting hole and the purple/purple and blue/grey secondaries. Small parts of the potting material are missing, too. 🙁
I then checked the other three trafos, they are ok.
Still, on all of them the trafo windings shine through the potting in this very region and also stand out of it a bit. Therefore, some elastic sheet (rubber etc.) is needed underneath when mounting them to a chassis.
The trafos were rather well packed, so I doubt the cracking issue has anything to do with shipping.
Did anyone else experience cracked pottings?

Sorry to hear about that Michael🙁
You can see a small small bit of the grey sleeve wire underneath mine but it is only slight and is all well insulated.
The packaging seemed to be excellent with plenty of bubblewrap and luckily mine arrived fine.
I've also had a lot of bad experience with certain things being transit damaged lately😡

Transit damage?
Hi,
I've had a look at 2 of the 3 trafos here and there is no cracking of the potting material. There is slight chafing on some of the secondaries, but nothing too bad. I am intending to send the best two to Edgar and Rob, and just wrap a bit of insulating tape around mine to be sure - you can't really see if the sleeve is breached, but I am more than happy to run with this.
Michael, are you able to accept the trafo in this condition, or would you like me to raise the issue with Antrim?
I am pleased that the trafo is performing well. If there is a subsequent order, I will recommend that a second label listing the order that the secondaries exit the case is included as well as the electrical labelling. I'll also recommend that the colour code for the reclocker circuit is altered - but I suppose YMMV with whichever polarity you use, so you could just mark one line and try them out.
Leo, has the sound changed at all?
Cheers
Jon

Hi Jon,
Yes, I'd certainly say the sound is different compared to my multiple ones, there seems to be more bottom end with the Antrim and the sound seems slightly more solid but the dac is now on a piece of wood instead of the case as well.
Changing the polarity does make a very noticeable difference for the Reclocker, I tried it several times, its really strange to be honest.
I wonder if changing the polarity for the other parts of circuit makes a difference

Re: Transit damage?
Hi all,
Same with me.
I wouldn't want to hand out this damaged trafo to Blitz, curva or my Berlin friend, who gets the third one.
This means, I would have to keep this one for myself.
Do I want to do so? No.
Antrim was chosen as manufacturer of the trafos because they promised us very good quality
for a rather high, but reasonable price
- and not acceptable quality for a bargain price.
Therefore, I would really want to send this trafo back.
Let us email for details.

Michi, I just wanted to say I have no time for finishing the DAC now and the way I see it it will take me another month to find some free time. Please consider the damaged trafo as mine and send it back in my name. For the money I won't take a damaged one, sorry.
Returns........
Fair enough, Michi.
I have emailed Antrim, and will let you know how we will take this forward.
Please bear with me for the time being.

Update..........
Hi,
Antrim rang me first thing this morning. They are very disappointed that this damage has occurred. They have stated that it would cost an absolute fortune to do a one-off replacement and that they had reservations about sending Calimero's parcel vial the post office today and not by their usual couriers (v. expensive). We are going to make an insurance claim against Parcel Force, 🙄 I will send Michi the 14th trafo that I had put aside for Rob Shellard. I have discussed packing methods with Antrim and they will mark Calimero's box as fragile. I am willing to take the risk with Parcel Force again as I didn't want to have them shipped to me and then on to NL as the cost goes up and there is twice the chance of damage in transit.
So there we are: in sum, spare to Michi at the weekend, Calimero's in the post today.
I'll be posting Edgar's today and will make sure it is well-packaged!!
Cheers

Jon,
appreciate your efforts put into this GroupBuy very very much.
I am convinced that you and Antrim do everything in your reach to make sure the trafo's reach there destination without damage. The fact that despite your preventive actions, a trafo did damage, should not IMO result into financial implication for you. We should wait what your claim against Parcel Force will result in.
However ahead of that result I want to raise the question:
'How to solve situations like this that problems with delivery of the ordered stuff, result in unexpected costs.'
I take the view that I am aware of those risks and taken into account the organizer of the Buy has no intention to profit from it, all members that take part of of the Group Buy carry those risks and therefor there financial implications. That implies in this case I consider it faire that (possible) extra (delivery) costs made for the replacement of the trafo, are devided over the members.
I wonder what the standpoint is of other members in this buy.
Henk

Hi Henk,
Thanks for your thoughts. This is one of the drawbacks to running a Group Buy. However, it does allow us the advantages of bulk purchase or cost-effective custom items.
As the claim against Parcel Force goes through, I will retain the financial risk. I accepted that risk at the beginning of the GB and hopefully PF will reimburse me all costs.
If it goes wrong, and I am out of pocket, then I would not expect a bale-out as I did not state that as a condition of the GB. Howerver, if this does happen, then any help will be much appreciated!! 😉
As we stand at the moment, this is a glitch. Antrim are very keen to help resolve the situation and are following up the claim.
Henk, your parcel is en-route. I am just going to post Edgar and Michael's now. Please check for damage when you take delivery This will help us to claim for any damage done.
Michi, I have inspected the 2 trafos I have here - you will be receiving the bestr of the two. There are minor chafing on a couple of the secondaries, but nothing major. The potting is level, no wires showing and no cracks.
Fingers crossed we get this sorted out.
All the best
Jon

Update.........
Edgar and Michi - I have just posted your parcels.
The Post Office would not accept them unless I gave and alternative address or return by surface if delivery could not be completed.
Can you ask your neighbours to take delivery of the parcel if you are not in?
Cheers

Hi Jon,
no reason to worry. If I'm not in and no neighbour is available, parcels will be held at the nearest post office for seven days. That's the big advantage of Deutsche Post against all parcel services...
Many thanks for all your efforts to sort this out!

curva,
the replacement trafo from Jon has not yet arrived. 🙁
Initially, it was my plan to wait for it and compare all trafos then.
On the other hand, I now have three trafos available
which are in good condition and fully usable.
I'll send you one of them to put an end to your wait...
Payment instructions are on their way by email.

Hi Curva,
That is the way I read the label.
Can someone please confirm this - I haven't done any mains powered projects yet, and so don't feel I have the experience to give advice here....
Cheers
Jon
PS, Parts order is in with Mouser - slowly going through the rest of the items. 🙂
