TDA1541A Availability
Hi,
There are opportunities to get 1541As here on the forum. For instance, I got some standard 1541As to use while getting my DAC up and running. When I am happy that my workmanship isn't going to blow anything, I'll change the standard 1541A for an S2 I have stashed.
You could PM Elib (on these forums) - plenty of us have got 1541As from him, including your fellow Canadians, and I was very pleased with the transaction.

I haven't built mine yet - once I have my trafo sorted, I'll turn to component selection.
There is a WIKI for component part numbers etc. I will be putting my info on there when I go through the process - there's already a whole load of info that you might find useful.

The S2 I was referring to is a grade of 1541A. They came in standard, R1, S1 and S2 versions IIRC. I believe the S2 were a later re-run for a high end CD player - was it the Marantz CD7?

I found the difference between the TDA1541A,S1 and S2 very interesting.
The S2 clearly sounded the best in my set-up, especially the bass
BTW your correct, the cd7 uses 2 x TDA1541S2's

I've got to give that a bit of thought over the coming months......
So much audio, so little time!!! 😀

Update............
Hi All,
here is a quick update:
As you know, I made some minor changes to the trafo spec regarding the secondaries' positioning.
I had an email conversation with Pedja on the subject, and we discussed thus:

I phoned Antrim's technical designer and had a chat about the secondaries. They have been able to produce for us secondaries that exit every 20 degrees or so from the 3 o'clock position - the primaries are at the 12 o'clock position.
In effect, our trafo replicates the original that Pedja specified. The not so good news is that, as all the windings are separate and none can be bi-filar, the cost has risen again slightly to 41.15 (plus delivery plus VAT). I hope that no-one is inconvenienced by this small rise - I gave the go-ahead knowing that you all want to get a quality trafo that will install with ease.
Delivery details etc will be confirmed when Antrim call nearer to job completion.
In the meantime, pse will you PM me your real name and delivery address so I can draft a plan for Antrim. I will not disclose your details to anyone bar Antrim.
More info as it comes.....

The best quality has a price.
John,
I have no knowledge nor experience about the what winding techniques makes the best trafo. With all confidence I trust the trafo solution you described is the 'sound-wise' the best, and given that the price is no problem (for me). If it was I should have been building another DAC or no DAC at all.
Thanks very much for all your time spend on this project, which gives me the opportunity to get a trafo optimised for Pedja's DAC.

Updates........
Hi,
Nothing heard yet. The lead time was 4 weeks or so. I make it around the end of the month for news.
Steady yourself! 😉
I'm enjoying my TX102 based pre - I can't wait to get this DAC up and running either!! 😀
Cheers

Update.............
Hi All,
Some good news and some not so good news.
The trafos are all wound. However, they have had an ordering oversight on the encapsulation cases.
The 6 cases they have will have the trafos potted into then this weekend and will be ready for shipping midweek.
Here is the situation:

Hi Jon,
Hope you are well. I am sorry to say that we have encountered a small problem here. We only have 6 encapsulated shells left. More are currently on order and should be with us within the next three weeks. Now I have no problem in getting the ball rolling and sending the first six out next week but if you prefer me to wait and ship them all together I can do that too.
I am really sorry about this. I hope it does not cause you to much inconvenience .. Your transformers are made they just need to be encapsulated. Please let me know how you would like to proceed, even give me a ring and we can sort something out.

As I see it, we should get the 6 shipped ASAP and deal with the rest later. I am happy to wait as I haven't built my DAC yet. What are your thoughts - Do we agree among ourselves who gets the first shipment, or do we agree to send out the Germany order (for instance)?
I assume that option X would be to take the trafos un-potted. I personally would prefer to await arrival of a potted version.
Finally, sorry to you all for this small glitch. If we are happy to choose a way forward over the weekend, I'll get the delivery arrange next week.
Cheers

Thanks for the the offer Jon,
but four trannies should be enough for Blitz, curva and me
- this is the exact amount that we ordered...
I still need quite a few parts, so I won't be able to post results of the entire DAC
with the new transformer soon - but I'll certainly post pictures of the transformer itself.
One more suggestion: Since the delay because of the missing shells is Antrim's own fault,
they might be willing to pay for shipping of the first batch themselfes,
at least in part...
They could ship the other two trannies directly to Jon, for example...
