Hmm... Could I use a 1K pot in the shunt hookup before a unity gain buffer? I know 1K is a little low, but I have a few 1K pots of very high quality lying around (I also had 2 20Ks, but used those for my passive preamp) and was wondering if I could use them for the volume adjustment for my active xover.
Hello,
I built my own and it kicks. I gave up on this design long ago. But I regret that now. So much waste of time/money trying really hard to find rotary switches.
I did some calculations on my own. And compared them to the data shown at GoldPoint website.
http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/ti20/ReportShunt.doc
It's in Word, I hope you guys don't have agenda with MS.
For me, my amp is really high gain. ... 11. So I had to increase the shunt resistor bigger than 10K. I am using 100K now.
I am supposed to be hearing distortion at high freq according to GoldPoint, but I am hearing none. ...
Oh yeah, this design works far better with low resistance pot, right? I get really nice curb with 10K shunt by 10K pot. I wish I had 10K pot, ... mine is Nobel 50K.

Hallo Mr. HarryHaller,
I'v send you an e-mail before asking if you could tell us where you bought the white cable in your Preamp.
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2608&perpage=15&highlight=passive&pagenumber=3
I also asked if it is possible to explain or to show us the schematic of you battery bias preamp.
I hope you'll be able to see this thread. And I hope to hear something regarding this preamp schematic and white cable.
Ones again thanks for your help.

Mr. Harry Haller is currently Sinbinned and he'll be out in a few weeks.
I have no idea what cable it is.

What happend to the battery not-so-passive preamp design?
The battery part could be a nice feature... A passive pre with blue leds

Hi,
I've just finished my Passive Preamp. It uses a dual ganged Alps pot and input select rotary switch. It uses bare wires through out etc etc.
I'll try to post some pics tonight...It sounds fantastic!
Thanks everyone!!!

I have just finished mine too!
I used a Dact 20K attenuator, and wanted to go one
further, and add a buffer.
As I did not have a BUF03, but a pair of EL2001 lying around, I used these. Sounds great!
But they give off a few mV DC....
Maybe I have to add caps? (Was not the intention!).

Final one. Here are the guts. An Alps 100k dual gang pot and rotary switch. The resistors are 1% metal films. The wires are...wait for it...home made:
I got IDE flat cables and took off one wire from the ribbon. I took off the insulation and seperated it into its 7 seperate wires. I then braided three at a time. Don't know why - but it sure as hell impressed my friends! 😉

Thanks Audiofanatic. It does sound amazing - mind you - anything would have sounded better than my old integrated amp with the amp stages bypassed!

Edit:
Just gramatical! 😉

Hi,
Looks very nice (and complicated!). I have to admit that I can't quite identify all the parts...but it does look impressive!
