Noir, a two transistor headphone amp: class-A, single ended, 150mA bias

I have a tube preamp and love the sound out of it would like to control volume via the preamp rather than Noir, would it be okay if I bypass the volume control on the Noir PCB?

The volume control on the Noir is at the input so seems like redundant in my use case scenario. but I am not that technical hence the question.

last and least question on sound, are the highs by any chance too energetic or fatiguing? I do prefer a bit smoother highs.

Yes, you can bypass the pot and connect your preamp to the input on the pcb. (or just leave the Noir's pot on maximum)

The sound will change for the better or worse when you connect your preamp but you could experiment with different input caps (C22/72) and also try removing C27/77.

Thx, my headphones are dynamic 24 to 250 ohm, 98 to 103DB sensitivity and I presfer listening at low volume. There is 5DB gain, I could be wrong but may be it's a bit more than I ever need, is there a way to reduce the gain on the amp to unity or the circuit is not designed for that sort of adjustment?

Got my kit from diyAudio store and parts from Mouser. A couple of questions....

1. What is the value of Resistor R30 and R80? The PCB silk screen says 300 and the mouser 603-MFR-25FBF52-100R measures at 100 Ohms 1/4 watt, 1% Yageo metal film resistor.

2. What material can be used for the MOSFET screw isolation when connecting the heatsink? I have looked at Llowe and HD to no avail.

Thank you in advance.

Ron

I think the BoM maybe hasn't been updated:

For the insulators, any TO-220 insulating pad kit should work.

Can use the ceramic, mica or even silicon, but it's up to you and your wallet as to how much thermal performance you want out of them.

Mouser has plenty of option: Thermal Pads

Hi everyone!
I did find a different solid aluminium knurled volume knob for the Alps potentiometer that looks like a knob from an expensive lab instrument. It has a dimple in the skirt so you can see where it's at. It fits perfectly on the shaft diameter-wise, except that you have to shorten it possibly 5-8 mm to sit closer to the front panel. See page 32 of the build instructions. So, take out your Dremel and shorten that shaft. I think it fits very well with the black front panel. I like it!
If you want one too, I bought it from Amazon: uxcell 25mm CNC Aluminium Alloy Potentiometer Control Knob Cap 6mm Hole.
They sell them in different sizes, and uxcell calls them "universal top hat knobs".
Cheers,
Walter

Curious has anyone run this amplifier with planar magnetic headphones? I have a pair of audeze lcd-x that i need a new amp for

My last amp was the schiit lyr 3. At 32 ohm it was something crazy like 6 watts. These headphones need 1-2 in my experience. Kinda power hungry
