OT - Yup! Been thinking about using the Apex Jr Cerwin Vega 6" drivers to replace a pair bad woofers in a pair of DCM TF-250's.🙂
Are we talking about this driver? Seems like it may work - let me model it, what is the Sd?

Hi Y'all,
I like MMJ's suggestion from Post #976, that could turn into a real T-TQWT tuning w/ the driver @ 1/3 of the duct length, and the terminus going into the Karlson front chamber. A Karlson for bjorno. I hope X doesn't run out of foam core board or time. 🙂
Regards,

although not cheap at $65, a Dayton PA310 might be ok for a project (I've got Kappa12 and PYM1298 Eminence stuff)
Dayton Audio PA310-8 12" Pro Woofer

Cheap drivers that perform well make me happy =D
XRK,
Yessir , that is the one 🙂
I am estimating SD at around 130cm sq ...
I have four of these .... They sound loud for their size, great clarity in the midrange and upper midrange , very strong out to at least 5k ...
Steve figures they handle about 50w rms ...
Initially i ordered four of these drivers and when the box arrived at my door i of course very enthusiastically tore the box open like a kid on christmas morning but was saddened to find that one of the drivers had it's frame bent during shipping, so i let Steve know about the damage and he sent another out immediately because he is awesome like that! 🙂
I ended up tearing apart the driver with bent frame so i could measure the top plate thickness and length of voice coil ... It turns out these little $6 drivers have between 3.5mm and 3.75mm of one-way xmax! (assuming the suspension will allow the cone to travel that far) ... Not bad for the price😀..
It uses an aluminum voicecoil former, if they had used a non-conductive material for the voicecoil former the QMS could have been higher but i am not complaining , i really like the way that these perform ...
I have two of these left that aren't being used for anything at the moment .... If you guys want me to put these on the DATS to verify T/S parameters just let me know, hopefully if there are any surprises they would be pleasant surprises .. 😉

XRK ,
Full range(or at least the natural high end capability of the driver) would be excellent 🙂
If it turns out that it does have some amount of ripple & dip in response between the 3rd and 5th harmonics when measured then i had an idea for an XKi offset modification ... I don't imagine the mod would be terribly effective unless the cab was tuned higher since the stub section needs to be in the vicinity of one third of the FB's quarter wavelength, but maybe some stuffing in the stub section would help if it is a little short in relation to FB ...
I think some 100hz tuned XKi boxes as tops for a Mini-Pa system would be super cool !
Xrk , how would one of the XKi boxes simulate tuned to 95hz with the fantastic $6 surplus Cerwin Vega 6" driver from ApexJr.com? 😀

Please get measured TS via DATS and I will design a 100Hz XKi.

Ok , Sure thing!
I should have those measurements by tomorrow 🙂

Dayton Audio PA310-8 12" Pro Woofer
Freddi ,
That driver simulates well in some of these cabinet designs that we have been exploring in this discussion ... Fancy 6th and 8th order BP variants etc .... Brian Steele can tell you that they are great in Tapped Horns ...
The Pa310 is only limited by it's humble XMAX rating, it is really too bad that Dayton couldn't have squeezed a few more millimeters of clean cone travel out of this driver ... Nevertheless still a decent price/performance value.. 🙂
That Dayton is a nice driver and with the right 6th order bandpass tuning, you can really control the cone motion to make your modest 5mm xmax "last longer" 🙂
Those parameters are very good and with 97dB sensitivity you don't need as much stroke. I will see what I can gin up with these.

$65 these days even made in China is pretty good for a decent 12" speaker. I wonder how its midrange compares to Kappa12A? 5mm might work pretty well - I need more K-variants !!😀 X - -is an 0.8 scale K15 the best kicker for Kappa12a? - or can it be tuned further for the same cutoff?
12pe32 is probably the most sensitive 12 in my pile - the slit vent K12 would develop horrendous harmonic distortion if driven around fb with pure sine - thankfully music of the kind I like has a lot of transient behavior. A single vent would fix things vs the narrow slits.
if PA310 has decent mids in a K, then I'd run a tube on top (look at my audiophile copper clad wire - lol)
Pyle'a pym`1298 was just about the same as a Kappa12

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

come up with a cabinet for Kappa12 or PA310 and I "might" get one built by thejessman instead of the little Beta8cx project.
Pa310 response in related designs
Freddi ,
Here is the simmed response of a Pa310 in a 60 liter Offset-Ml-Transflex, which is very easy to convert into a Karlflex 😀 A scaled up & offset XKI would also have very similar response with potentially better output on the very high end (as in up around 1k or higher) since the driver would have it's cone facing forward (better for approaching full range) ... For bass cabinets i would stick with the motor-out method ...
This graph is with barely over 100 watts ... Decent efficiency for such a small cabinet and great bandwidth .. Good deal for a 60 dollar driver ...

looks like a Karlflex with forward facing PA312 is worth a build in XKi. I've got Kappa 12a which might shine with perhaps a 50Hz corner XKi - ? Kappa12a would give up some on the low end but probably 2dB hotter in the mids over PA310 (???)

Yes, that would be my assumption too, less bass capability but strong mids and highs.... Some of the Eminence drivers have that interesting upper midrange shout somewhere between 1k and 4k, which could actually be useful in this case ..... I know BFM takes advantage of that upper midrange bump in response to help him get better output up high from his midhorns like the DR line or OT line by attempting to push past the cutoff with the driver's extra output up in that region ... Deltas and Kappa/Kappalite are some drivers that have that particular feature ...🙂

As promised CV VM6 measurements via DATS
Here are the screenshots of the measurements I just took with Dayton's DATS unit. As you can see these figures are extremely close to what Steve has listed on his website .... These Cerwin Vega VM6 drivers from ApexJr are fully legitimate!
😀
Mine were shipped zip tied together face-to-face .... Light paper cone, inverted & treated cloth surround, bucking magnet and main magnet enclosed in a metal cup (shielded i suppose they call it), good construction , glue looks clean and precise ...

nice ! (beautiful cat too) - are those cloth surrounds?
Thank you ! and yes, he is beautiful, but we try not to tell him that too often or it goes to his head .... He is already such an ego-warped monster as it is 😛
The surrounds are definitely treated cloth 🙂

Ok as soon as I get some time I will model it as an XKi tuned for 100Hz.
Yes, beautiful cat. Mine would try to squeeze into the DATs box as a bed even though he wouldn't fit.
JUST LOOK AT MY PARTS!
Here are some pictures of the Cerwin Vega $6 VM-6 driver that i tore apart ...
It was sacrificed in the name of SCIENCE! 😀
The frame was bent so badly that you can see it actually even caused the voicecoil former to crumple just a bit when i tried to free up the cone by hand ...
In these different pictures you can see the slit in the aluminum former (it is a 1" diameter vc), you can see the pole piece and the gap in another pic, you can see the nice thick top plate, and also the bucking magnet ...
The windings on the voicecoil look like copper or maybe CCAW?
