New Markaudio MA200 8" Driver

After deciding to build some FHXL with Alpair 11MS after finishing a pair of FH mk3, these MA 200-M have stopped me in my tracks.
Is a Sibelius clone for this driver a good option.

After posting a thread about this driver and the great response received I have decided to build the larger than FLXL, the Jain version, which might still be a bit smaller than optimum but I am in a limited space so have to keep it down to size a bit. There is a much longer and wider horn mouth so should play quite low and can be closer to the wall than some designs, which I really need.

With an overall height of approx 1000mm (600+300+ 5(19) + feet ), I’m guessing that’s to get the driver’s acoustic centre at roughly 750mm / 30” from floor? As a nominal BR, the location might be less critical than in a 1/4 wave action “line”, but that’s just a wild asst guess. Note that in the Syncerus, the driver centre is roughly 930mm.
That, and Scott tends not to do things just for shizen giggles - at least not publicly - and he will likely correct any egregious errors and assumptions made here.

As indicated above: yes, it does go in the Joan enclosure -just. I can't comment about anybody else's designs though.

Thanks, just had a look at them. This DCR plan looks interesting, is there a reason why the driver is placed so low in the cabinet.
It's to optimise the location on the longitudinal without requiring extra damping and to position the driver at roughly 30in from the floor; it's intended mostly for smaller spaces.

How would a MA200-8 driver in a Joan FHXL compare to Alpair 11MS in a FHXL.

Thanks for the clarification, looking to make a new floorstander after the Fugel-Horn mk3, which was great by the way but with a bit more body to the sound.
Not great at speaker design, so just trying to get a feel for the sound balance of a certain box/driver combination. Thanks.

I picked the Joan for several reasons but maybe even the most important I just really like how it looks and will fit nicely in our mostly scandiavian remodel plans. The other plans shown here might even be better for performance, hope not so, and I could of built most anything even from my own design but with all the great plans on this sight and others from members here that are far more advanced than I am I just went with the one I like the best🙂

and just after @TerribleTanker said that, I come in with a wild idea.

The BIBs I built with the TB W8 1772's in them work wonderfully, they have been veneered with mahogany and coated with shellac. They. are. superb.

but I cought the building-bug and just want to build something else, maybe I can give them to a friend later on.

I was thinking of a smaller BIB with a higher WAF. What about an inverted BIB that's only ~1,2m tall? Then it wouldn't be much bigger than a normal TQWT with the added benefit of having a big throat/horn aimed at the floor.
Obviously I would lose some low-down power that comes with a longer transmissionline, but that's accepted since the new MA 200 seems to be more than capable of going low, so maybe not much extension is needed at all? (Plus there's always room-gain, too).

Is my idea sound or is it 💩 ?

For larger drivers — the ones Scott suggest "just fit" —Joan is a small box. A SET typically has a high Rout which effectively pushes the Qts up which is compensated for by designing a larger box.

Since Joan works for both A12p and A12pw, i suspect A12pw woukd be a “just fits” and A12p has greater latitude so woud be fine but will need more damping and maybe furtherout from the wall.

Note: same comment applies to most any loudspeaker
