So were there some other points that I could not measure until 3886 and 318 were removed ? I have 2 new LM318 but only 1 LM3886.
In this moment I can't think about any.
Be careful while soldering.
Now I'm going to sleep, more tomorrow. 😉
Didn't used the Chip Quik desoldering alloy? 😱
With it it's easy to desolder SMD chips without doing any damage...
Slightly OT but this is the first time I've heard of the Chip Quik. Could this also be used to remove all components (regulators, transistors etc) without damaging them or does the iron have to be so hot (while using the Chip Quip) that this might damage the component?
Thanks
I've had great results using solder wick on through hole parts. I usually draw the wick slowly across the spot on the solder side once the metal melts. Some operations require a coating of liquid flux on the braid. When almost all the solder is soaked up, much less heat is required for the final removal. Sometimes the parts just fall out.

The iron temperature is the same you would use for normal soldering/desoldering.
The secret is that the alloy has a very low melting point so it remains fluid much longer than normal soldering alloy.
Grounding, Noise, Safety, Etc
Things are kind of quiet right now. As we all will be building our FE into a system, I am trying to learn more about grounding, noise, etc.
A while ago, there was a lively discussion about this subject with contributions by KSTR, Soongsc, and Andrew T. Someone mentioned papers by Bill Whitlock. I found this one online and it was very useful to my understanding.

Does anyone have any other good information sources on the subject?

Very interesting read, Jac. 🙂
Yes, things will be calm until boards are shipped (manifacturer should ship them July the second, so they should be in my hands 2-4 days after).
Other interesting readings (probably already linked) are:

It is spooky how quiet this thread has been lately! Anyway I posted in Bobs JC-2 thread that I had received my kit and my lighter note kit. The lighter note project has begun and I am making good progress on the enclosure. The face plate is almost finished and will incorporate some of the design elements of my 4780 integrated build. I will be making this a single input and triple output device for versatility. It will be simple but I have high hopes.
My package from Uriah also included some other interesting devices, a pair of LDR resistor replacers! I know Bob has used these before with success and I am excited to figure out how to incorporate these into this build. Thanks Uriah!!
Here is a pic of the front panel so far( I am actually further along, I just haven't taken a pic)

Those RRs are excellent for use with the BrianGT and the XY designs. But they have only been used successfully for R1 on those kits, as far as I know. Please check with Dario before trying to use them with the FE boards.
Sounds like a good excuse to order a pair of BGTs to me. 😀

Yeah im not sure if they would be appropriate anywhere in this complex of a circuit, but worth some discussion. I have not had enough time lately to sit down and do some research. Maybe this week😕

Maybe it's because no one has boards in his hands? 😉

I fear there is no place where to try them in the FE... all signal resistors apart shunts are SMD....

I envy your metal craft ability! 🙂
Some little news... it seems that 200R Caddocks are again available form Mouser.
Hey, It's Friday evening - shouldn't you be somewhere dancing the Salsa?
No, I usually do it Saturday and Sunday. 😉
But in summer in Milan, since 1990, there is a Latin American Festival and best evenings are Monday and Tuesday.
Looks like fun. Around here most of the events have "Hard Rock" attached to the them. (Not my cup of tea). Last week we had the River Roar and next comes the Pig Gig. Great spot for Berbequed Rib lovers. They used to bring in acts like Ray Charles and Wayne Newton, but now it's mostly screaming guitars and thumping bass I can hear in my house, a full twenty-five blocks away.
Still can't determine when one song ends and the next one starts.😡
There is a jazz festival (Tito Puente, Jr Orchestra) in a few weeks and I need to attend to re-calibrate my ears to a live performance for FE RC testing.🙂

It is and it's a full two months event 🙂
Dancing, concerts and latin american restaurants.

Hi Dario, in regard to the SMD parts, will there be a group buy for that? It is quite hard to obtain the SMDs in my place.

There's no a parts GB but I can buy SMD parts for you. PM me.
A new rig for volume control gizmo using Bare Alps 27 10K pot. As a side reverence, I went back to the Parasound site and discoverd they are using a 50K Alps for volume. Any ideas?
Also, finally trimmed most of the long leads on resistors and caps. I was getting some distortion that could have come from vibrations on the leads. I should mention that the use of sockets requires some mods to several parts. Most of the Caddocks need their leads filed to fit the sockets (Dario's tip) and the Amtrans have very small leads that should be bent a bit to ensure good contact.
Another little brain storm (or maybe brain fart) is a nominating process for a uniform set of music selections for all FE builders to reference. Maybe two each of Rock, Jazz, Classical, Country, Salsa/Brizilian, Vocal and Misc. I don't think there would be any copy-write problems to placing them in an online directory with the express purpose stated clearly. It can't be all that much different that streaming stuff on YouTube, and this would not be open to the public. I can create and share a directory by invitation only on a BoxNet account I use. If the selections were edited to just the significant segments of a piece (there are several excellent free software tools) , the size and any possible liabilities can be contained. This is of course assuming everyone has the equipment to play digital files. If not a computer - most smart phones have the ability to play some form of uncompressed music.
What Say The Population?

Hi Bob,
a shared space on a file server is a splendid idea and is legally trouble-free when it is protected from public access. I would propose that anybody willing to do so may be able to upload a song snippet or a short compilation of song snippets, in .WAV or .FLAC format. This will avoid the (likely) endless discussion about which songs to choose and agree on. 🙂

10k Alps Blue RK27 is a known-good standard for a passive "preamp". Personally I tend to like the 10k TKD CP2500 better but it also is significantly more expensive.
As usual, good electrostatic shielding (including the pot's metal housing parts) is required for best hum/buzz performance. Again I would recommend non-isolated RCA jacks in a completely closed aluminum box (Hammond), and the knob is best choosen from a non-conductive material.

This populi sez YUP. A idea better than the unified speaker.
Where did you get the pin-out info for the Alps pot ?
