Hi Guys,
I have another question if I may. Earlier in this thread someone asked if the two boards would run on just one of the power supplies and he was told yes. If this is true, is there any advantage in using two supplies. It just seems that increases the chances of ground loops and just a lot more wires running around with current in them. Could one of you expand on this. I am getting ready to layout my case and want to know this.
Thanks, Terry

Terry keep going! looking forward to you getting this pre-amp built and working. In fact I am right behind you, Mine is almost done also.
I plan to run both my pre-amp boards from one power supply.

Theoretically separate power supplies provides improved sound. You may or may not hear a difference. If you can afford it, why not try both ways? It's just one more connection to your star ground...
Hi Bob,
Really not a matter of affording it. I already have both power supplies built. It was more about the extra wiring and space in the case. If you think it will improve the sound I will go ahead and use both PS. I'll build the case tomorrow and maybe try dry fitting the parts in there and take some pics so I can run it by you more knowledgeable folks. For now I will just use the large transformer since I have it. I still plan to buy some smaller ones but just have too many irons in the fire right now. I just finished the B1 Mezmerize and am loving it. I asked in that thread but maybe it won't hurt to ask here as well. I'm going to need something to control the inputs. I like the relay circuit in the Mezmerize. Wondering if there is a pcb for something like that floating around.
Blessings, Terry

Yahoo! I finished it. Well sort of. I have it playing. Wow, it is a really clean sounding. Maybe just as clean as the DCB1 with a little more gain. Very happy I stayed with it. Definitely worth it. I spent a good portion of the day looking for some chassis mount XLRs with no luck. Then I decided to look through the shed and I came upon a small outdated piece of studio equipment that I rescued from the recycler a while back. It was loaded with 1/4" insert jacks. Perfect! I was trying to figure out how to get all those XLRs in there. I installed enough to allow for three input channels though I only have one connected so far.
I ended up just using one of the power supplies. It doesn't break a sweat. I put a 1.4V sinewave into it and it was totally clean on my scope. The best part is it sounds beautiful.
Thanks for all your help guys. Here are a few pics. Who doesn't like amp porn?

Nice one Terry. Looking forward to a deeper analysis on the DCB1 and this one. Similarities, differences (exept gain), pros and cons. Witch schematic did you end up with? Any special components etc?
That toroid looks, ehrm, huge, for the job. Is it?

Congrats Terry. Glad you're enjoying it. Have you considered allowing some airflow to the heat sink? Between the PSU and pre you're dumping around 40 W into the enclosure. I bet it gets pretty toasty inside. Component longevity may be an issue.
Hi Bob,
I could drill some holes but to be honest, the heat sinks get just barely warm. The only thing that feels hot at all are the load resistors. I have them elevated and separated so I think they will be fine. I have been listening to it all day today and I have to say it was definitely worth finishing. Can't wait to get some cords made so I can try it in balanced mode. Hopefully it will wake up the A_X. If not I have a Perreaux 9000B that is balanced. The cool thing is, I have a nice little power supply for something else now. 😀

Congrats Terry on getting your's working I could never get mine to work maybe I will revisit it here in the near future I would like to get it going.
Thanks, thought I should put a more recent pic. 🙂
I just hooked the X-BosoZ to my Perreaux 9000B. Oh my! That amp never sounded so good.

Hey Gooch,
Let me encourage you. I'm really enjoying it. Playing it through a Perrreaux 9000B right now. Really, really nice. It adds just a tad more kick than the B1 but still very true to the sound. I hope you get the bugs ironed out.
Blessings

Rocker Terry reminded me of a high school buddy. Now, I have to tell you that you have a doppelganger in the Adirondacks.
Hey Bob, Good call. The old pic was a crop from me holding a Strat.
Thanks Russ. This is actually a very good sounding Pre. I have been using it a lot. Unfortunately it wasn't quite enough to make my Aleph-X sound good. I'm afraid that amp is going to give up it's case for something new. Too bad Twisted Pear gave up on these. I think you really had something here.

Terry, I see the new profile pic, you clean up well.
A little more rounded around the edges as they say! I was about to say that you and I are the only ones who have not changed our icons in a decade but you got to it before I could say that.
Hey Terry- told you so! Its a great preamp and your design looks super cool, love it! Glad you got it working.
You are a music guy so seems like you have a lot of commercial amps over there? I **used to** have a lot of high end audio over over here, you have no idea! Your preamp will get a lot out of those balanced units.
I am down to DIY and 1 set of commercial stuff, had a fun journey but am out of it now.

Hi lgreen,
Yeah, I kept looking at that old pic and thinking I should step into the present. I remember you and I were hot and heavy into it when I was here in 2008. If feels good to be back. I'm having a lot of fun and finally have time to dig a little deeper into electronic part of it. Starting to get a little more understanding. I'm glad you are at least still lurking. I could never afford good stereo equipment back when it was popular. Not that I could now if it wasn't for DIY. If you hang around enough you'll get the bug again. 😀 I did.

Yeah I had a great time back then and the community here was really fun, you gave me a couple zingers, hah! I'll maybe make some stuff with the kids later on when they get older.... and learn letters and numbers! They are very little now (1 and 4) but are growing up very quickly.
Hey, seriously though you are doing great- keep it up! You have become an expert builder here and I think a lot of people can and do look up to you and how you succeed at these technical projects that many give up on. Only a few people here stick it out successfully on these things. Ever notice that the 'experts' here rarely show or own up to building their own projects? Your posts are very helpful to lots of people.
And dump that AX for the DX.

Hi lgreen,
Thanks for the kind words. I'm just having fun and trying to learn. I figure by posting my mistakes and ultimate fixes, they might help someone else some day. I know that when I use the search feature in the forums, it will often take me to a thread where someone has had a similar problem and reading through their journey will give me a better understanding of what I have done wrong. Maybe my journeys will help someone else in the future.
