I'm planning something like a karlson design for a simple speaker for bass and acoustic use- the v shaped aperture really helps to spread the sound well. I'm curious if anyone else has done something similar from a single driver.

That will work for sure.
But it is limited to only provide you with the proper sound - not necessary the rest of the band or the audience.
By this I imply that no PA is used.
It can also be a little bit difficult to tilt the speaker if you are using a seperate top (non-combo).
