Most amazing dumpster dive ever!!!!

Dumpster diving takes on a new dimension if you've worked in radio long enough. I'm cheating a bit however, all this stuff was intercepted on the way to the dumpster. To offset that fact I didn't include the collection of 1930's and 1940's microphones. Does that still count? 🙂

They DO recycle wives... the funny thing is they are much nicer to the next guy... as we are, to their replacements... hmmmmmmmm......

Hey RDF, yeah that counts... that WAY counts... is that a McIntosh there in the background?

😉

Yup, an early MC240. Picked it up around 1984, a year into my first gig. It was beneath a pile of rack panels under the bench and the boss was only too happy to get rid of it. The facility had upgraded to SS MC250 models. It was in need of a bit of repair though, the thermal surge limiter failed and it cost me two, three dollars out of pocket to replace!

Radio's just such a stange industry. You work with this stuff for years and the percieved value goes to zero. I'm amazed myself at some of the things I've given away in the last six years including: 10 kWatt AM transmitters, a working Studer analogue console, an MCI console, at least a dozen Revox reel-to-reel machines. That captures what people were willing to pick up, plenty went to recycling.

IMO, Something like that is just begging for a choke input power supply. Would render about +/-51VDC after rectification and smoothing. You also get to use 100% of the AC current rating of the transformer as DC current instead of about 68% for cap input. Not that you're going to run out of current either way with that transformer.
Alright, I'll cry uncle.

I have been looking around for a good PS design based on your recommendation but have not found anything that looks good. Did you have a specific circuit in mind that you could point me towards? (Thanks in advance for helping the noob!) I think the +/-50 VDC is a little more reasonable for the LM4702 and the transistors I will be using with it. Plus I had never heard of a choke input PS before you mentioned it and now I am intrigued! 😀

Thanks again!

not quite a dumpster dive, but found a guy locally that was selling all his machining tools.

i picked up 24 end mills (some new, never used) in various sizes, and 20-30 pounds of aluminum for my CNC conversion project. all for $20. thats not too shabby.

i can believe some of the stuff you guys are getting out of dumpsters! i need to find some dumpsters around here. there are plenty of tech companies and stuff. any suggestions? anyone from around here know of where to go?

I have yet seen a Tektronix scope in our town dump. However, I have seen scopes used by the US DOD (7900's and 7100's) for a minute fraction of their original price on EBay.

A couple weeks ago my youngest son picked up a Kitchen Aid Mixer at the Millburn Town Dump -- the gears have to be "repacked" but a $300 mixer for nothing????

WooHoo! More goodies in the trash! Some old equipment was getting thrown out, and though most of it was trash, I was able to pull several high quality linear power supplies! The two on the right are +5V@2A and +/-15V@400mA, the top left is 28V@4A, and the bottom left is 5V@3A. Gotta love it!

found a lot of sweet stuff on the heap in my time as well, to nemption a few:
Eltek 20A 48V SMPS in aluminum rack box.
HP procurve 4000m switch with 40 ports, uppgradable to 80.
asus mini pc with celly 1700\512mb ram\dvd burner++
3 24 ports 3com\allied telesyn switches
"digital" 4*pentium pro server with 1 gigg of ram, monster redundant psu's, and the motherload of 7 18.2gb scsi disks, 15k rpm.
and offcource tonns, and tonns of damaged\defect electronics i ripp the guts out of.

I'm writing this on my latest dumpster dive find. The most recent version of Apple's G3 PowerBook (400 MHz/320 MB RAM). I guess it was tossed because a new battery was worth more than the resale value... i had a spare battery from my older PB & i swapped a bag of cookies for an AC power adaptor & a wireless PC Card, installed Panther and i have a very usable machine to use for road trips & for serving lossless audio.

It's a Pismo (my other PB is a Lombard but it has a broken EN port and won't run X). I'm very pleased with it and my wife uses the old one with wireless for dealing with a couple OS 9 aps

Ahhh it's so nice to sit here on a dual core intel MacBook Pro 🙂

Hows the Pismo hanging in there ?

Broken en port. Should i fix this one too ? No one around to step on that ones screen either 🙁

latest dumpster Dive. Well it was not a dive, BUT i did go into a second hand shop last year and pay 20$ us for my fluke meter that works 100% now after cleaning the carbon display pad 🙂
