Most amazing dumpster dive ever!!!!

if you see what looks like a crappy koss or similar crappy DVD player someone threw out you might normally pass by take a look to make sure it is not part of one of those mini "home theater" systems. they have to have a more beefy PSU inside.

i found one the other day and it has a very nice toroid inside.

looks to be about 100 VA but it has extra secondaries for pre amp and logic circuits.

the rest of whats inside is rubbish. it has 2x 3 channel car amp chips for the power amps. about 60000 electrolytics in the signal path etc. as for the transport LOL its a bit of plastic with 3 toy car motors in it. it actually played a CD but took about 5 minutes to load it. and it sounded really dull and horrid.

anyways it was worth scrounging for the toroid. I am sure i will find a good use for it.

"I just went and pulled one. On to the bench, just give me a minute here..... haha.

240V / 40W
DCR 27 ohms

It reduces the voltage on a 10k resistor by 3dB at 2kHz. Predictable effect below this. Above this it rolls off to a minimum at 20kHz.

So, inductance is approximately 0H8 and interwinding capacitance is approx 80pF."

Doesn't sound to impressive. People have reported good results as plate loads, but I don't know what size of choke they used. I will lash up my 100W ones and tell you what I find.

my best dumpster dive

While traveling abroad I found a bank that was replacing it's computer system. Outside the building was an 8 foot high, 8 by 15 foot dumpster filled to the top with slide in circuit boards. DC to DC converters, power boards, and the likes. Big ones, small ones and even aluminum carrying cases with test equipment. I made two trips with both hands full of goodies. Can't seem to identify some of the component, or find info from the number that are printed on them. I keep telling my wife to come and look at this list, as she thinks I am the only one that dumpster dives!!

Hi,
I just thought I would report back on the light ballast. I ended up using the 100W ballast as a power supply filter for a driver stage of a PP amp. Passing about 50mA with 300uf of cap before and after gives flat response on the output. My conclusion is that they will make fine power supply filters in a preamp stage.

What I do to get Parts for my projects is I have an add on line looking for Old Stereo"s and Such and poeple just e-mail me and tell me to come pick the stuff up.....

I just picked up 2 JBL Speaker Cabnets from the 70"s with the Mid range and tweeters and Crossovers intact but missing the 12in Subs, but the Crossovers and other Components are worth a Few bucks.....
it also came with a Nice Vintage set of Onkio Speakers which sound reallt nice....

I also got one of those old 70"s Stereo systems that weight like 50 lbs which after I opened it up turned out most of the weight was in the Motor for the record player but it also had a Big 100 to 250vA Transformer and a Bunch of Tip41/42 Chips in it and a Lot of Big metal Capicitors in it.....

I also got an old JVC Stereo reciever/Amp rated at 160w and 200vA...It had a Huge Amp Chip in it but it was Burnt out but the 200vA 24v Transformer will come in Handy.....

I also got 4 CD Players which all work fine and a Nice Sansui 120w 5 Channel Amp/Reciever which works perfectly and 2 Old Tape decks that all work perfectly....

I got all of this stuff off of just a single guy who was the first to answer my add, I also have a Whole Truck full of Stereo equipment to pick up in a couple days....I don"t know what I will do with it all but I guess I will save and sell what works and can be sold and will salvage parts from the rest of the stuff that doesn"t work.....

If anyone is looking for something for a project and doesn"t mind useing salvaged parts then let me know and I might have what you need.....

Cheers

I'll get back to you when I stop grinning so dang much.

For starters:

-Step-up transformers for small tube amps
-ANY guitar amp parts
-output transformers
-FR drivers, even singles or with bad surrounds (I'll fix 'em!)
-Woofers/subwoofers
-Decent volume pots
And I'll probbably think of more later.

Well I will probably have some of the stuff you are looking for in a few days....

What I do have now that you might be interested in are Volume Pots (Log Pots in 10K 50k 100k and 1m Values) that are in Good shape and well cleaned (Not scratchy)...

I also have a couple Power transformers but I don"t think they are suitable for Tube amps as they are Low Voltage High Current and not High Voltage Low current.....

I also have quite a few Opamps many of them Discontinued models...I also have quite a Few PCB Mount Pust button On/On (Or on/Off) switches some that can switch up to 4 different things at a Time....I also have a Lot of PCB Mount TS and TRS Jacks and RCA Jacks....

Tomorow I am picking up a whole Crap load of stuff and I will be sorting through it on the weekend so I might have some more goodies that maybe of intrest....

Cheers

Once I was flying to the Midwest from NJ and we stopped in an airport with inexpensive av-gas in the middle of Pennsylvania -- whenever I spy a dumpster I just have to get a look -- we found a whole bunch of Collins/Rockwell/Bendix av communications stuff in there -- none of it worked but did fetch a nice price on EBay.

This is a pretty good one IMHO, and I can't help but jump up and down bragging 😀

Crunchville dump......

The pre worked fine after replacing the power cord. The amp is fine after a small zero dollar repair and power cord replacement.

(someone saw it fit to chomp the cords off prior to dumping...duh)

That copper is worth money you know.......

I barely know where to start on what I've snagged from our town dump. It has a swap area and I've lost count on the number of speakers, amplifiers, receivers, cd players, ham radio gear, and so on that I've dragged home. On top of that clean outs from a TV repair shop and two companies that manufactured RF gear. Very little vacuum tube stuff, a couple Bogen PA amps & tube testers, but gear from nearly every hifi manufacturer. From the electronics outfits, gauges, transformers, spools of wire, chassis, racks, capacitors, boxes of resistors, stainless hardware, aluminum & composite parts (rod & sheet stock), and the list goes on & on & on. For a couple years, comical. Go with a car load to throw away make several trips back & return with a full car loads. Some I've sold, much I've given to friends of like mind in need of project fodder. (I won't even talk about the great furniture from Knoll, Herman-Miller, etc. I've gotten there.)

😉

Not sure if it exists everywhere, but I regularly, as in every two weeks or so collect a mostly functional receiver or amp from freecycle.

Perhaps I'm lucky, but here's yesterdays 'find':

Subject: [SantaCruzCountyFreecycle] OFFER: Denon Receiver - B'forte
Model DRA-635R. Works well although one channel needs repair. Good for someone who knows how to tinker w electronics.

Got a Sony with a flaky volume control the week before. I ignore the every other one listed as working perfectly...I figure there's someone out there that can use them...

Dumpster diving is fun and all, but if you can get the same result without the dumpster or the diving...

Since we're swapping illnesses, we recently did another house cleaning at work. I just couldn't toss these out. On the left three or four dozen 10K ohm linear conductive plastic faders w/ audio taper, mostly Penny & Giles. On the right, two transformers with a 12b4A for scale. The smaller is from a Bell/Nortel ring supply; Teflon leads, 18-0-18 @ 5.5 amp per side, telephone service rating. On the right, same voltage but unknown current from an 50 watt FM exctier. I'm guessing higher than 5.5 amps.
