Hi DJN,
If I used a flexible drive to remove the screw I could, but a straight screwdriver probably not. I bought 14 of the Vifa drivers, the driver will live it's life in that speaker. 🙂

Webber, Djn:
I use a straight driver to loosen the screws then use fingers to unscrew it the rest of the way. It was worried at first because it looked too tight like I would not be able to remove the driver - but with a slight twist it comes out cleanly.

Thanks web. I am building mine out of .5" mdf then veneered do I'd like to have no screws in front. I'll yes Allen heads so the short end of the wrench will fit
Hi X,
I use my laptop to drive either the 2020+ or the TPA3116d2 and I have powered the amp from 12 volts to 20 with little difference in volume. I have swapped the amps playing the same song on the 20" cornu and the Lepai at high volumes almost feels like it will hurt the driver and the TPA3116d2 doesn't come that close. The amp sounds real pleasant and does a better job filtering out noise from my laptop power supply. I wasn't sure if it was a bad component on the amp??
I did double up on the wings on the .4x Karlsonator, I just glued a curved piece of foamboard the same shape as the slot on each side.
I'm listening to Jackson Brown, and the acoustic guitar seems like he is sitting on a chair beside me, very rewarding build!!!!!!!

Hi DJN,
A Bondus ball allen driver should work too, good idea on the cap screws. I was thinking of building them out of 1/2" MDF, but it's raining out and cold, didn't want to build it in the shed. 🙂

Webber,
Good idea to double up the front wing panel. I have the Lepai TA2020+ too and my TPA3116d2 goes way louder and cleaner. Try a better power supply - a 19 volt 4.6 amp laptop brick is what I use and that can drive 70 watts into a 4 ohm.

Hi X,
I have a 20 volt 3.5 amp that I have to change the plug side of the amp and will try that before I buy a brick. Such a nice amp for $13.99 and a $1.28 for the RCA jack adaptor from Yaun Jing Audio. If I buy another amp, I will buy their 24 volt 5 amp power supply.
Still listening to Jackson Brown, unfreaking believable, the speaker is now on the tile floor 8 feet away and sounds best, the bass is better. I had it on my Island 4 feet away and was a bit much that close. I will build the second one this week. It would be funny to build a foam board big one for the Pioneer Bofu drivers I have, might blow it apart. 🙂 Thanks X for sharing your knowledge!!

Just turn the volume down 🙂. I think I know what he means: at 8 ft away on the floor the room modes come into play and you get bass enhancement. I will put it on a desk and listen 2 ft away and see what it sounds like.
question on scaling
i just discovered i had 4 of the tc9fd drivers laying around and was fooling around and took the original box dimensions and scaled by 0.53 and compared to what you published (see attached picture). I am trying to understand the slight differences i am seeing (red = xrk, green = 0.53 * original). Also would you share your akabak script? btw i quite enjoy these threads (built the cornu spiral)

Harperrc,
Honestly, I don't recall how my dimensions ended up so different than 0.54x. My height is 15 inches and as I said optimized the dimensions to maximize foam core usage as boards are 20 in x 30 in so 15 in is half of a board length. You can go with the actual 0.53x or whatever it is not that critical. Good luck. Try the 0.4x if you want a quick and easy build.

Webber,
You are welcome 🙂. In have thought of a big foam speaker using the XPS sheathing at Lowes or Home Depot. 0.75 in thick x 4 ft x 8 ft pink board for $12 I think. If you have a Bofu - it might work well in a full sale 30 in tall Karlsonator. You will need a thin sheet of 1/8 in or 1/4 in ply glued to the foam board where driver cutout is as foam cannot handle weight of a 6 lb driver.
Hi DJN,
My ears and knowledge of all things audio is at the newbie stage but what I FEEL when listening to them 2 feet away even at low volumes seems like the bass, mids and highs are there. What happens when it is at a low or higher volumes on the floor 8 feet away something magical happens, the sound seems to have the time to coalasce so my brain hears it all with out being harsh. Like a person that is a close talker, lol you feel uncomfortable when they are that close. 🙂 I think X has a better grip on what I hear. I hope this helps. By the way your craft is beautiful how you merge art and sound!!

Hi X,
I bought 10 Pioneer Bofu drivers just before they went extinct. I used 2 in the ceiling in my dining room a 3.5 cubic foot box sealed, stuffed with a super tweet built between the floor joists when I was remodeling the kitchen. They put out crazy bass and coming from above, when I have time I will EnaBL them. Getting back to the foam build, I have more drivers to play with and knowing how warm the Bofu is they would be good in the 30" Karlsonator. Is there anything different I shoud watch out for building a big one? Would there be a drawing here for the 30".
Thanks,
Webber

I seem to recall similar questions having been asked before elsewhere but I'm feeling lazy, so anyway:
Considering how much experience you have with the Vifa driver, how does the Karlson slot change the tonal character of the driver?
And, how much better efficiency would you guess/measure that you get by using the slot?

Hi Y'all,
Repeatedly I see questions to the physical dimensions of the Dual Vifa TC9FD .53x Karlsonator; a while back I was trying to come up w/ an AkAbak script for the Karlsonator .53x, but just ran out of time, and I just cannot come up w/ a relationship between radiators and walls that results in an SPL curve that makes any sense to me. But, I did get to the point of making a drawing of the beast 🙂, so maybe someone else will get some use out of it.
Regards,

Nice drawings Oliver! Thanks. I am sure this will be very useful to folks building this in the future - especially out of plywood. 🙂

Squeak,
I don't think it improves the efficiency - just the smoothness of the directivity - less lobing. It's in the Kicks Butt thread somewhere - I measured it and is a 70 to 80 deg wide equivalent of a horn.
