Hrrmmmm. Yes of course the will be more and more interesting smd's that enhances the possibilities of today. But as Salas puts it we are not quite done with through holes yet. I solder whatever as long I can see them but identification of parts are not of my liking. To be sure every part hast to be measured unless they are from the same roll...
I can't say it was better before but sure it was easier... Maybe an global movement against quarterly reports might give some ease...

Which pins can I use to check power supply voltage? I'd like to check from the top of the board while it's in the case and running.
the three pins (@ 0.2" pitch) that pass through the PCB near the middle.
They have +ve, Power Ground and -ve on them.
These pins could be made as test loops to make measuring of "live" safer.
they should read:
outer to outer 20Vdc
outer to middle 10Vdc

Thanks Andrew. As luck would have it the relay power section of my Mez just died. The LED lights up bright for several seconds then fades out. None of the relays engage. Any troubleshooting hints?
Look if a rectification diode has blown. Then if the 7812 regulator is OK, if MOSFETS show 3.5-4V between G-S pins so they are still good, such things.

Just to be clear, the buffer section is lit up and seems fine, it's the relay section that malfunctioned.
Some cold joint? Better revisit the area with the iron and a thin solder wire? Also is there a small sink on the 7812? If not, use one.

Yep, the main ground wire was barely soldered to the board. I re-did that and it's back to normal.
did anyone ever compared a complementary (2sj74,2sk170) versus the traditional b1?

Different sound. Coming across as more tactile but ultimately colder also. B1 makes good synergy with complementary power amps.

Not that good. Do the "leg trick" to equalize currents before re-trying with Leds which will be much and possibly ugly rework.
