Marantz CD63 & CD67 mods list

Hi,

I had a similar problem recently, in my case it was a lifted PCB trace under CD15 letting large amounts of DC through the signal channel.

I found it useful to record a steady sine wave signal onto a cd and play it back so I could check voltages at all the pins on the opamps and at various other points to look for differences between the L and R channels.

Regards

Pete

Thanks for the info Pete.

I opened the box again tonight and in this instance, the problem was another bad solder on pin 6 of the top opa627. I fixed it once and it read OK, but then when I resoldered the Brown Dog to the main board, the connection went bad again. But I redid it and it has been working fine for the last hour.

I must say the improvement seems to be positive across the board, especially in the treble, but also with imaging and soundstage depth.

I listened to Dire Straits 'Private Investigations' and noticed an echo/repeat in the lyrics which I never noticed before. Good stuff.

My next plan is to bypass the HDAM and perhaps remove the DC coupling caps and muting caps. Hopefully, I won't kill it in the process 🙂

Thanks for everyones input so far.

Im looking at buying the Burson Audio discrete op amps for the cd63KI. I read on these forums that they tried some underhanded posts that didnt reflect to well on them, some time ago though.

Does anyone actually know if they are any good or not, i can purchase for £41, so may try them and post some reviews.

has anyone actually purchsed them, i see a few have posted some links.

Just need to clean up the output on the cd63 ki because its still sounds wey too bright for me. Ill post seperatly on that later.

This circuit is already in your player: the HDAM circuit. Try bypassing it. If you want the player to sound less bright try OPA627 and/or OPA132. If you want to go all the way: rip out all the output parts and build the passive filter and the discrete FET-stage. That cured it for me 😀. Lot cheaper, and more fun too.

Regards,

Ray.

Just a whisper - watch out for LM4562.

It's leaving the AD8620 in the dust.

6h5c, avr300 any links guys ???

i was planning on bypassing the HDAM so no problems there.

i think ill go without the burson stuff, its sounds like the advertising and support just aint right !

LM4562 is simple, it's just an OPAMP swap. And what a swap!

LM4562 is not in production yet, it's only available as sample. It has awsome specs. just take a look here: http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LM4562.html

But I would first consider this when the rest of the CDP is "ready". First the HDAM has to go.

Hmm, there's lot's of info on this in this thread.....somewhere in these 3800+ messages. Try a search for "HDAM bypass" 😀.

When you wait for the sound

I like it (a lot).

Is it really that good compared to an opa627 + opa132 combo? It must be pretty special then.

I have my new player now and am about to put my mods back in with the addition of a new pcb with x2 audiocom %V regs and a 7805. I might have to get a sample of this new op-amp 😀

Yes, i'd like to test them, but I have to get my hands on them first. Where did you guys order them, at National?

Ray

Yes on their sample program. I ordered mine yesterday late night, and they didn't ask for a fee at that time. I ordered 5 DIP package ones, so they should be drop in replacement, and their voltage seems to be OK for a drop in replacement, but i still don't know what the caps on our AD8620 are for and if those new beats need it also.
