UZ07H & UZ03D now reduced to £7.98 from £12.99 & £10.99 at maplins! Both 5 1/4" drivers. MY22Y 34mm tweet also was £24.99 now £14.98

cheers steve

could someone please tell me how to work out which one of these 5 1/4" units would be better in a closed box, upto 300Hz? I want tight, fast bass.

Hello,

I stumbled across this forum whilst looking for something else and have ended up making some small monitors for my PC!

The local Leicester Maplin thought they had three of the HDA coned drivers but due to a stocktaking **** up (typical Maplin) only had one. They gave me a couple of the Paper coned ones for the same price so I was fairly happy.

I have ordered a couple of the HDA drivers to upgrade with and they are "in the post". According to the parcel tracking they have been 10 miles up the road for the last 3 days...

Anyway heres a pic of what i have so far, dimensions are 200x300x130 i completly miscalculated and didnt take into account the thickness of the 18mm MDF so the internal volume is not much more than 3l. A bit low!

They sounded very uneven in the bass to begin with, a little reseach made me realise I should use much more stuffing.

After putting in 110g of pillow stuffing into each cabinet they now sound much better. As I'm using them with a PC i'm using an eq curve on the bass to compensate for the low end roll off.

Driven by a 32w chip amp they sound very detailed with a good rendition of voices. The bass is there and suprisingly deep, you just cant have them too loud without the cones hitting the end stops. I'm still contemplating a tweeter (testing some peizo tweeters with a 1uF cap in series) as they might not need one. Cant decide yet will have to experiment more.

I just ordered 6 AP100Z0 from Maplin and then needed to amend my order so I went back in and thought I had amended it only to find that I have ordered another 6. Rang them up and they say that I cannot cancel, I have to send them back when they get to me?? Sounds mad.

Any ideas waht I can do with 12, I only needed 2 but thought they were good value so bought a few more. 🙂

With twelve you could make a nice HT set up on the cheap.

Bipole rears, MTM centre channel and three way fronts using one AP100 for mids and a pair for bass. All you would need then is a sub and your sorted!

Thanks for the graphs sreten. your not trying to sell me a ported solution are you, by any chance? from what you've posted ported apears to give "something for nothing", there must be some dissadvantage? Reading Weems's speaker book, Q > 0.38 should be closed only, have you altered the enclosure size to negate that? or is it that Qtc= 0.707 = fast, tight bass, however it's acheived?

A ported solution usually requires a box twice as big as a
sealed solution, which can be a major factor, and IMO not
a good solution if a subwoofer is going to be used.

However for full range use maximum SPL capabilities and
increased bass efficiency of a reflex design are overwhelming.

Shown are the two alignments I'd use for sealed+sub and full range.

I'd also go for a floorstanding 20L to 25L 2.5 way for full range.

🙂 sreten.

Hi Sreten, thanks for your input-again, I don't need high SPL or a large quantity of bass, i have other systems for that😉 I am happy with the quantity and quality of bass i get from the 5 1/4 inch monacor unit i have in the sealed box in the picture below. What i need is a bass unit to marry with the visaton WS13E mid i am going to use in my next project. I like the sound of the monacor (bass), that's why i was going to stick with sealed. I was thinking of "borrowing" it, but would rather keep these speakers as a reference. I would like to use something from Maplin, ie V. cheap! upto 300Hz.
Thanks again.
Mark

interesting

Wonder if my Edgware or Kilburn Maplins has got any of these very reduced drivers left.

Just found a large quantity of very nice grey/silver sparkling laminated 25mm MDF[meant for kitchen work surfaces] in my loft;which i never knew was there, because it was hiding behind some very large paintings and broken mirrors.

Anyway want to buy loads of the the maplins drivers on offer and make it into a line array. With 2 Morel soft dome tweeters and 2 2.2uf 600v single polyproplene caps i have lying around from some product i never got round to building.

I was thinking of 8 drivers per side in a line array with 1 tweeter and single cap, wiring them in a series-parallel arrangement.

A pic of a completed little monitor speaker. The AP100Z0s arrived today and the paint had just about dried!

Still need to paint the other speaker and let them run in, and also decide whether to have a tweeter or not. I'm thinking of using the cheap polycarbonate Audax ones from maplin
A friend has left some Alesis active monitors with me for a month so it will be interesting how they compare as near field studio monitors. I think that except for bass & loud levels they will be fine for my uses.

which of the remaining Maplin Audax drivers would get closest to the quality of the SPH-135 sreten? i am happy to loose a bit of quantity/dynamic range at the lower end!
Cheers Mark

I'd say the 6.5 inch fibreglass woofer, presuming 8 inch is too
large, given that the AP210G6 is excellent value, very efficient.
