Depends on the software / system you want to run. Some of the common options are meant for the RPi only (Ropieee), while others also have a x86 incarnation (e.g., Volumio)
Something like this?
Refurbished: HP t630 W10 | ThinClientSpecialist
Yes, but I was meaning a bit older models for a bit lower price 🙂
E.g. FS Futro S920, HP T610/620, etc., all on ebay for a pick.
Great source for thin clients info is the famous site Thin Clients
That thin client world is totally new to me.
Is there also something like an obese client? ;-)

Corporations use them extensively and when they get replaced at the end of their warranty, the used/refurbished sellers get flooded with that particular model, driving the price low. They are built to last (including properly-designed power adapters), often nice-looking, decently equipped (USB3, gigabit ethernet). Some have options for multiple SSDs which can be handy for inexpensive raid1 https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-source/377502-external-ssd-music-storage-6.html#post6808144
The older models are too underpowered for running graphical Windows (CPU and drive space), but for headless linux they have plenty of power and space (1GB RAM, 4GB SSD is enough).
Some 5 years ago I built a simple streamer/CD player/amp with FS Futro S450/550 (20EUR from ebay.de at that time including the power brick) Home * pavhofman/plabs-player Wiki * GitHub, it has been running basically every day since then in my parents' kitchen (close to the stove, a bit demanding environment) and never had a single failure.

I stream via a Raspberry pi 3+. I currently use Volumnio but I find it hard to navigate through the music with this. But it all sounds great.
OT question - just got hit!
Fired up the AP and the Apwin 3.3 software and got an error message from the runtime library it seems, see attached.
What I did:
Ran Apwin in demo mode, no AP hardware powered up, no USB connected: same message.
Repaired the latest C++ runtime's I found in the Settings|Apps: same message.
Uninstalled Apwin, restarted the PC, installed Apwin: same message.
Apwin runs fine on my other PCs, and it ran fine on this one until just now. What the heck?
Any ideas?

Windows update recently? What version of C++ run time is required?
May need an update to apwin?
May need an update to apwin?
I don't know which version of the runtime is needed. And there is no update to Apwin, for at least 5 years ;-)
It is intriguing that this just happen out of the blue, on this particular PC only.
Thinking about the error message, it doesn't appear it is the runtime, apparently the app (Apwin) requested to the runtime to terminate it, in an unusual manner. Hmmm.
When I launch the app, it says, can't find hardware, you want to run demo? Yes, then it brings up de screen, the analyzer panel, the generator panel, next should be the sweep panel but then it quits.

All thin clients support suspend-to RAM sleep and wake-on-LAN, unlike RPi, allowing much faster startup. Power button press - sleep, power button press - wakeup. Absolutely no problems with weak PSUs etc.
.
You don't shut down a pi. It costs around 5$ to run it for a year.

Got a new iFi Zen Streamer. Install via the app went well, until at the very end. Then I get the rotating circles (busy) and the text https://ifi.local/
I've talked to their service desk, no immediate solution, send in a support ticket, but that will take some days for a reaction.
Any Zen Streamer users here have an idea what is happening and how I can fix it? I can send it back for a refund again, but in the end I'd just want a working streamer!

Just use your RPi...

I decided to just disregard that spinning wheel, call up the app on the PC, and lo and behold, it plays a local radio station!
Going back to the phone, no more spinning wheel, and I can play the radio stream.
Now how do I make it read my music disk??

On your PC's browser, go to http ://ifi.local
to check the configuration settings. Apologies if you knew this already.
EDIT: I had to add a space after "http" for it to display properly.

So, slowly, it's discovering my music. I can also play from the phone through a UpNp player (Bubbleupnp).
Sound quality doesn't leave anything to wish for, on first listen.
(Although, right now, Bette Middler sound a bit rash).

Thanks, I'll see if I can/need to do an update.
I didn't realize that the ifi.local is actually the device itself ...

So I went to the update function, and yes there was a newer firmware and I started the download. It ran until 50% then stuck there for 5 minutes. In despair I closed the browser, opened again and the thing was totally unresponsive, half of the menu's weren't there, no play list, what have I done!
Tried again 10 minutes later, all was well, and the new firmware was installed. So it looks that the internals are fine, except they seem set to scare the user whatever he does! Get a grip guys!

+1Just use your RPi...![]()
Great start Jan, but you will probably end up with a RPi DAC streamer one day. 😉Sound quality doesn't leave anything to wish for, on first listen.
I doubt it! I can't think of a better DAC than the ADI-2 Pro Fs R, to be honest.
Except maybe Bruno's Mola Mola TAMBAQUI, but thats another $ 10k for an inaudible (for me) improvement.

Sure -- the idea is to connect your ADI to the streamer USB. It does not matter if you use an iFi or RPi as streamer, the ADI will sound exactly the same.
