It helps a lot if you have a distortion analyzer. An analyzer would allow you to display the distortion
waveform on an oscilloscope and with today's scopes you can also capture that to a digital image.
Even an old HP334 will give you this, and they start at $300 on ebay, although they might need a
little work....
