414-8B availabile?
When I last communicated with them, Great Plains said they lost their Alnico supplier and the 414-8B would not be available for awhile, like months from now. Did he indicate that these were indeed available now?

Hi Jon,
Well, from what I understand they are available. I told Bill that I just want to see the specs of the 414-8C and then decide which one I will order. We were talking about an order in the next few days and Bill never told me that the 414-8B (Alnico) was not available. So, my comprehension is that they are available.
Have a good day,
Sébastien

Alnico available
Hello Sébastien:
Indeed, just order my Alnico pair. They said a couple of days to build them, but parts were in stock.
Thanks,
Jon

Hi there,
Some new informations regarding the project. Great Plains Audio sells the 414-8C which is the ceramic driver. Be carefull on eBay, because even if the title of the add says "414-8B, 414-8C, etc...", this add was intended only for the 414-8C. I almost buy the wrong speakers and I told Bill at GPA about that confuse title.
Regarding the differences between ceramic vs. Alnico version, Bill told me that the T/S parameter are the same and that he can't head any sonic difference between both. Finally, I decided to go with the Alnico one, same as the original Petit Onken project.

Interesting link about petit Onken on DIYaudio
I just want to add this link to the petite Onken litterature. Sure, you have to go trough the 23 pages, but they contain great infos for petite Onken project:

Measurements?
Hello Jon,
Will you post a measurement of the GPA 414-8B when you have them?
I noticed that the frequency response curve GM posted is identical to
http://www.labsp.net/images/AL-414-8B.jpg
whereas on this website of a Japanese shop there is also another frequency response curve:
http://www.labsp.net/images/AL-414Z.jpg
which is more similar to the frequency response on the drivervault website: a 6 dB/octave rise between 600Hz en 1.5 kHz which is extremely easy to compensate.
It might be that 414-8B in the Japanese shop is partially demagnitized and thus measures flatter.
I am quite interested in the alnico version but shipment costs from the US are substantial. I noticed that Wolf von Langa - who I believe buys membranes and frames from Great Plains Audio - also makes alnico magnets next to his field coils: Alnico | Wolf von Langa , so this might be an option.

GPA 414-8B measures
Hi Peter,
You can find some measures of the GPA 414-8B on this thread:
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/202439-standing-waves-something-else.html
On my side, I've just reveived my pair last week. I'll report later as I plan to work on this project in July.
Have a good week-end,
Sébastien

Hi everyone,
I just want to tell you that I've finish my petite Onken. They are running since last week. I'm really impressed by their sound. Wow!!! One of my goal was to get more bass than my actual AMA 3x100 and it is totally accomplish.
Plus, their sound is full, rich, pleasant, natural, dynamic... All the best! I'm also VERY surprised by the quality of the Emilar EA-175 compression and EH-800 horn. Thanks Michel (4mc2) for the suggestion.
Here's a few pictures.
Have a nice summer,
Sébastien

Very nice!
I have some Emilar EC-175 (w/ Radian diaphragms) that I like a bunch as well on some DIY Tractrix horns, but it's cooler in a way to use the Bowties.

Hi Eldam, Pano, GM, IG81 and everyone,
Sorry for the late reply. Usually, I received automatic email about new post on this thread but seems like it is no more automatic... 🙂
I'm glad that you guys appreciated the project and the "visual" result. Thank you very much for your positive feed-back. Regarding the "auditional" result, it is also excellent and I enjoyed my petite Onken all summer long with many hours of listening.
I worked a bit on the attenuation circuit of the compression driver. At first, I set it a -15 dB. I had a wonderfull bass but I found the midrange a bit setback in comparisson of the my last speakers.
Then, I tried -10 dB of attenuation. The result was an impressive deepness in the soundstage, awesome details on voices, strings, etc... Unfortunately, the impressive bass was more shy and I can't live without it. So, I decided to try -12 dB, the setting which I'm still running. It is the best sound I get from them now.
Eventually, I'd like to buy the equipment to take some mesures of the speakers at home but I can already say that I like a LOT what I heard from my petite Onken.
GM, yes the color is a kind of industrial gray. In fact, it's one tone darker than the back wall which is a very light gray. At home, we do like speakers' color very much.
Have a good day all,
Sébastien

If using a passive attenuator, one often has to wire a by-pass cap around it to let the exteme HF 'sparkle' come through, which can change the entire tonal balance in such a way that more attenuation can be used on the horn without it sounding 'recessed'.

Hi GM,
Yes, absolutely. I used a 3.3 uF capacitor there and it works very well with the high frequencies response.

Super..........
Having a good bass & mid bass is one of my main problem ! Pleased than you enjoy the Petite Onken...

Bonsoir Eldam,
Yes, the idea of a 4 ways with a dedicated mid-bass speakers seems very good. Many audiophiles went there. I know that Francis Ibre often talks about the importance or this mid-bass fourth way.
Regarding the source, don't worry, I have a good one. I'm mainly on vinyl with a Technics SP-10 mkII turntable, SME 312S arm and Ortofon X5-MC cartridge. Cd player is a good Cambridge 840C. I haven't dive in the dematerialized music yet.
Bye,
Sébastien

Tip Top ... stay with the turnable... I'm still enjoying my little Rega Planar III sometimes.
Yeap for the dedicated mid-bass, we have not so high effcienty replacement for the Audax PR17Z0... do you know its mms & efficienty😀😀😀😀 Even the little PHL1120 is far behind with its 94 DB & 4 times higher mms 🙁
