Kit in Australia

Don't want to hijack the thread but it does have a good title 🙂

What if we expand it so that other "kit in Australia" is included? Building speakers in Australia is often quite a budgetary challenge if you have to use locally sourced components. Looking at whats available in shops like Parts Express and some of the European shops online etc.. and all the exotic drivers and bits that the US and European speaker builders have access to can make you green with envy. Well, up until you check the postage costs

However, looking at the amount of aussie diyaudio members I'm sure that there has been a few very resourceful designs that would give the rest of the better resourced speaker builders a run for their money 😉 I mean hey, Thiele was an aussie! (for you young whipper snappers reading have a look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thiele/Small ).

Also, there are some lesser known but awesome Australian speaker driver companies. Lorantz in Victoria, Etone in NSW. Is anyone using any of this stuff in HiFi? Iv'e used Lorantz 15" subwoofers, they are to die for and in the aussie pro audio industry the Lorantz 18" are a industry standard. Where are all the HiFi designs?? Did you know that old man Lorantz will do custom driver orders if you want more that 10 of a driver? where are all the group buys?

Would be interesting to see how other aussie builders are getting around the budget/driver market obstacle and to see what they are using.

Isn't the Kurre4 (with the Visaton tweeter) also a great Australian loudspeaker.

Only for the funny part of it...

And for the good speaker builders of course.
There is another thing in common, or worse, there are no kits for sale. They come more from Spain/or the rest of Europe. Now there is a new guy, here in Portugal, buiding good ones (high performance speakers) from Fostex that are not for all.

Hey, I have a pair of Crocs! NO fur on them, but they're fabulous shoes. Fantastic; I can wear them anywhere, including fishing off the beach or rocks, and can just rinse them out under the tap when sandy.

Grip like hell on wet rocks, too.

It's a lifestyle thing...

Cheers

NO!
I haven't used any of the Etone range because of the rude and abrupt emails I received when I asked about a small run of low Fs sub-

we could organize a group buy of enough drivers I'd go with some HQ subs from Lorance, but I can't afford a run on my own, I'd like some good 15 or 18s better than the CV I already have

OK
Enough idle chit chat and ragging on my slippers, back on thread every-one ( or not )

The only way I got around driver prices was having a trade account with the distributor.

I did run an online business years ago selling drivers with little markup that only covered my costs. Sold $22,000+ of drivers etc for around $350 profit but in the end wasn't worth the effort. Also had a speaker kit (excluding the box) for $180 which received little interest.

thats a real shame rabbitz 🙁

I do think part of the reason the LSK kits are as popular as they are is because they come with the box, even if it is just flat packed ikea style.

Speaking of aussie kits, anyone try out or know much about http://www.adelaidespeakers.com/ ?

Apparently the guy is retired for the most part and the web site it out of date but he can still be called and is very helpful and makes great speakers.
