Iron Pre Essentials Kits For The DIYA Store - Register Your Interest

Look the other direction. It's based on the source(s) you use vs. the amplifier you're using.

The output impedance of the source is considered. Also if the output of the source is coupled and/or the input of the pre-amp you're building, then that can also factor into the decision.

I like the rule of thumb that 10k is probably good for almost any "modern" sources. 50k is probably good for any source with a tube output stage. 20k is a very nice compromise. I put 20k into everything I've built if I recall correctly since I never know what sources I'm going to use, and I've never opened up any of my commercially purchased gear or measured it to check output impedance or to see if it's got an output coupling cap or its value.

tl;dr - Pick one and don't look back unless you have a tube source. Then, ask some other experts. 🙂

I had this link pasted into my notes when I had the exact same question. I think it provides a much better answer than I could with just enough detail.

https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/337794/choosing-the-value-of-an-audio-pot

As always... I just read a lot and cut and paste. Others may have differing thoughts, and the information I use may not be perfect.

funny, when uploaded directly from phone, something shrinked pic automatically

heh, even phones are smarter than Mighty Moi

edit: I figured it - I did pick pic from Viber repository, not from Camera; pic sent 5min earlier to my Buddy

so, Viber did shrinking

Didn't have to. I asked if they could exchange them instead. They did with no complaint. A very good company is Edcor USA. Received them very well packaged. 👍

Now to figure out how to use them in the Iron... Is it best to hand wire or make a board? Hopefully someone will attempt before me.

one of the ways is - mount them in same enclosure with Iron Pre, wire, add pair of outputs

ending with one set of "normal swing" outputs and one set of "high swing" outputs

clarify what you want exactly (which Iron Pre - SE or Bal) and what high swing output - SE or Bal?

Both Iron are SE. Held off on Bal when system is more capable and store in stock.

I like your idea/method of having 2 output high/low swings. Does away with a switch.

To hard wire them in or make a circuit board to mount? I can do either, whatever is best practice. Do not wish to embarrass our benefactor with shoddy werk. All will be mounted in custom billet case. Werking 6061 or 7075 instead of wood. There must be a wire diagram out there to decide.

OK, I'll make some graphical files for both Bal and SE Iron Pre, with additional Edcor 600:15K

tonight, mine

you can use piece of veroboard to mount it, or you could use ''non-PC" xformer package , having wires instead of pins

of course, if you already have PC ones, veroboard or custom made pcbs will do the job

custom made pcbs , just measure of builder's OCD, nothing more

I'm with Zen Mod on this one, but only because I haven't heard the J2 yet..

worthy building them all Papamps, for joy and neverending fun

but, M2 ....... not "just" Swiss Knife of Papastable, but definitely most impressive wall poster

important note: there are some, obtaining place in Audio Hall of Fame, with much lesser drek than just this one
