Thank you! That is a great idea. It will still be surgery getting the volume control back out, but this idea of the extension will make wiring possible compared to what I have now.
As for the balance pot, I need it for the room that I have. Acoustically lopsided.

Ok, so at least now I have a rational way forward.

I just took both the volume control and balance control off of the front panel, and soon I will be planning the placement of the extensions. If it turns out that the transformer is part of the problem, then I have some Mu-metal that can be used for shielding. One thing at a time, instead of how it went last time.

I carry the fault of doing really good work until I see the end and then rush the rest. Hand in hand with that fault is another. Making what I put together very difficult to get back into. In this case, both the volume control and balance control are useless after the removal. In both cases, because of the brass disc used, epoxy was the only way to attach and still get the depth right for the knob. There have been cases where I have threaded the brass disc, but not this time.
Anyway, the idea of using extensions will solve all of this and maybe even help the original problem of hum. One thing at a time!

And so, the rewire begins. I have some parts on order and while waiting, will be considering the mounting of an extension for the volume control as well as the balance control (which is on order). I will take my time to be more proud of the result this time.
