The back cover is printed.

Now I need to get some plywood and machine the horn parts.

After being on hold for a while, 7 out of 11 parts are machined now. I hope all will fit together nicely. There were some small errors that need to be addressed when building the second one. If I am lucky, I will finish the last parts within the next two days and glue everything together during the weekend.

Putting it slowly together. I admire precision professional carpenters. It gives me a hard time to have everything fit perfectly together (and still not perfect). But it is still better than my first try, so maybe one day...:)

So the horn is built up. With a brad nailer, it is much easier. If I worked on a bench and fixed the bottom to it, it would have been even nicer. Happy so far.

That looks great!

My recent DOSC adventures are kinda inspired by this thread (and Danley's ILE speakers.)

I've been running an ambiophonic setup at my desk for about a year now, using a barrier, and I think I might be able to achieve something comparable using very narrow directivity speakers instead.

I did some first measurements with open back on the Fane and I feel this will be a success! Both drivers have a really good overlap, the Fane Sovereign 8-225 plays easily to 800 Hz, the bandpass is super nice, the GRS down to 300 Hz. Also the sensitivities are really close. I need to finish the box as sealed and maybe add bass reflex later to see how deep it can play in this format. If I wanted to keep the size, it would need a 12" subwoofer box below.

First in-room measurements. 1/12th smoothing and no gate. Lots of reflections, for the final tuning, I need to take the box out. It seems that with just a little EQ I can make these pretty flat. The first crossover was a textbook BW24 at 500 Hz.

The funny thing was, that even the reflected sound was pretty good, I originally thought my back enclosure for the PT6816 was leaking, but it was not. The HF directivity is relatively narrow (as intended) and seems to follow the conical expansion nicely in all directions. The dip around 430 Hz seems to be position/room related. All in all, I am pretty excited:)

Almost done. I should have been a bit more careful with fitting the parts together:) It feels solid and will deserve a proper finish. I have not decided yet on the color, maybe black or anthracite outer shell and the horn in "Altec grey" should look good.

Looks like it will end up really well! (y)
I'm kind of surprised by the planar dip between 2-5kHz though. The horn should have started loading the driver there considering the width of the driver aperture. I'd probably take some EQ to that. Do you have some impulse responses you could share?

While on forced break from speaker building, I just had an idea that the half height GRS planar would be ideal for a home synergy horn. No need for round to square transition and the top end dispersion looks better. On the low end, 800 Hz crossover point would be easy. The only downside is maximum SPL - but still loud enough for home use. I will keep the long ones I have for now though.

The weather is great now, but work travel is too much at the moment. I just had a chance to fire it up with closed back and did some mono (right channel only) listening and I was again impressed. I am really looking forward to measuring it and finalizing the DSP crossover. So far it is still without any EQ and just a simple textbook crossover. It seems to allow any position when pointed properly at the listener.

I am still listening to it in mono with the first crossover. The mid is Fane Sovereign 8-225. Other projects got in the way, but I am happy with it and the second one will be built, too.

I am now building a SLOB and 7331-like midbass unit to test with this one as well (I also need to finally refurbish one of the 15" horns I have in the garage) And a pair of large DCX464 equipped horns to hear which combination I like the best.

Too many things to try and too little time. If you are interested, I can share the 3D files if you send me a PM.
