Hi Niels Bak!
do you have a picture of your reflector? or a picture of ballast?

Hi ywh

I found this picture of the original lamp.
Hope it will help a bit.

I have ordered a 400w AC JYs-SE lamp and a 400W DC JYs-SE lamp for two projector projects I am working on.

For the AC one, can I just use a ballast and capacitor suitable for a 400W mercury lamp running from 240V

As for the DC bulb, other than starting, can I simply drive it from a DC supply with some form of current limiting - or is it "not quite that simple".

I was toying with the idea of feeding the bulb around 52VDC with a chunky 50W resistor dissipating the surplus (16 Watts or so)

I have searched the forums heavily for "DC PSU" DC ballast and so on, and cannot find anything - apologies if this has been covered before but despite searching hard, I could find nothing.

Kind Regards
Mark

I have ordered both an AC bulb and a DC bulb from the diypro.us website - so as and when they arrive, "Yes". 🙂

Will a 400w mercury ballast drive an AC lamp please?

I have already started to make a little switched mode DC unit -but if the AC can be driven from a mercury 400w ballast, then this should be lovely and simple.

Ahh, thank you for that.

If I order the JYs-DE lamp (Double-ended): 400w AC double ended, will this work ok with a 400w 240v electromag ballst intended for mercury lamps please?

If so I will order one of those - and think of something creative to do with the single ended one I have coming! 🙂

Kind Regards

yes!
400w AC double ended will this work ok with a 400w 240v electromag ballst intended for mercury lamps .

where will you intall this lamp? DIY projector? or Commercialization projector? what is the reflector? I can take off a ended of 400w AC double ended lamp, so you can intall it in a reflector, like other single lamp

It is an unusual application this one, it (may get two as 1 spare) is being used in a large metal reflector (ellipsoidal I think) to make a powerful search beam. I wanted an AC one and a DC one - but in the short term, I might get two double ended lamps for AC and use a sinewave inverter to do the DC>AC part.

I have a friend who lives in the Highlands - and many times amateur walkers misjudge the time it takes to come back down. He has used a 130W torch on more than one occasion to provide some light for them on their descent, but if at all foggy / misty, the beam has lost a great deal of its power by the time it gets there - about half a mile away.

Having bought a couple of these torches (huge metal reflector and heat resistant glass front), I am almost certain I can replace the halogen lamp with a 400w discharge bulb for him. This should mean that even from half a mile away, some serious illumination can be provided in an emergency.

I can also buy 400W ballast EXTREMELY cheaply at the moment (surplus) so that's a nice bonus.

So, alas not commercial, most of my tinkerings cost money, not make it 🙁

I was going to use a tile-drill to bore a hole into the protective glass window and then feed the other electrode out through that - and then place a SECOND section of glass over that for safety. I appreicate the offer of removing a cap for me, but not sure if that will really make too much difference. I can connect to a stud with a crimped eyelet easily enough and feed it through the hole I think thanks 🙂

If nothing else, it will be a fun project which ought to provide a bit of light on the mountains / hills near him.

I shall plonk an order for the two 400w AC lamps in the morning - lol and try and think of something creative to do with the AC and DC single ended ones I alreayd have ordered. I am sure I will find SOME way to drive them a bit lol.

Thanks again for offer of help on removing an end, but I think it will be ok as a double ender anyway thank you.

Kind Regards
Mark

Hi Niels Bak!
you need 120W BSM-AC-H bulb, price is $80, shipping is $5.

Hi again ywh

Now I bought the projector.

And The lamp is an UHP 132W and not 120W as I wrote earlier.

A freind of mine, told me that he is shure i need a UHP replacement bulp that is different than the one you have told me. So now im a bit confused.

I have Attached some pictures of the actual lamp in the Projector.
