How better is a Turntable compared to a CD?

Veeeery nice ... extremely accomplished player, beautiful tone on that guitar, expertly recorded - thanks for linking to it! 🙂

Edit: And, just caught the Paper Moon clip - my applause, also ... talent runs in the family, eh ... 😉

Well, you've got me going now! Tracked down Sound Proof - Fifteen Minutes of Fame -, this is very much my cup of tea, very interesting musical experimentation going on ... this is where replay has to be super, super clean - otherwise the harmonics will kill the impact, and 'enjoyment',🙂, of the music ...

Frank you overwhelm me, I don't know what to say but thanks. That is really a nice gesture and I genuinely thank you.

The other aspect of bass 'extension' is that many subwoofers are largely effects boxes: the hardest notes to reproduce cleanly for a transducer are the lowest bass notes, go below 100Hz and the levels of 2nd and 3rd harmonics tend to go through the roof - so what you end up hearing from those ultra low notes is actually the distortion tones, lying above 100Hz - creating a very 'rich' sounding bass. An absolutely pure note below 100Hz is actually very boring to listen to - I wonder how many people have done the exercise of driving their bass speakers with pure tones, and listening for the variation of distortion harmonics building as the level of sound rises, it's quite easy to distinguish each harmonic coming on song ...

As another exercise, brickwall filter a bass heavy recording so there is zero above 100Hz waveform content, you have a musical track with a 20-100Hz bandwidth. Play this through your system at various SPLs, and record it with any simple device - I wonder what the spectrum of above 100Hz sound content in the room will be? 😉 ...
Subs may be acceptable for crash bang wallop movies but not for music.
I listen to my music through a pair of 15 inch vintage Tannoys and if I switch to a system with a sub, the fidelity goes out of the window.
The sub just flaps around producing bass without any harmonic overtones, which is so important when listening to classical or any acoustical music.
Soo, some of you guys using subs can hear an appreciable difference between vinyl and cd?😉

No flywheel (or rather small inside that black thing), and the cylinder will be wobbling, wildly varying torque.
Likely sounds as a sewing machine.
You guys are impressive!

Here's a video of the thing operating, I've set the link to start just as he sets the tonearm down (it appears to play in the right direction, even though the rest stand for the arm is on the other side of the record):

If you don't immediately recognize the recording and don't want to mess around (I can only see the big "RCA" on the label, can't quite read the artist or song), this link goes straight to the chorus (making the song more easily recognizable), and also demonstrates quite well the amount of wow (WOW!) and flutter this thing has:

Now I want to try that green felt for a platter mat.

Bill, I hope you didn't interpret my post as a virtual reality.
I just meant that it is simply impossible to recreate a live event; just no way jose. The instrument's tones are different when reproduced by loudspeakers; all of them. And the dynamics; no way you can get the live dynamics of a full orchestra with choir and 16Hz pipes from that church's organ.

The best loudspeakers in the whole world ($2,000,000+/pair) simply cannot replicate the accuracy of live instruments and voices (piano, tenor, alto flute, cello, violin, viola, trumpet, saxophone, xylophone, trombone, clarinet, baritone, flugelhorn, etc.) in a way that you'd be completely fooled.

Besides, the mixing consoles, the tape recorders, the microphones, their critical positioning, etc., are all liabilities to the live events and venues.

* What's in room 889 Bill?

NorthStar, no worries, no offence taken.

In room 889 at TAVES where my speakers, and the rest of my system from home. Let's say 'Euphoria' is my name.

There are some nice things being said about my speakers, and system at Canuckaudiomart. Look under 'must see rooms at TAVES.

Thank you for sending a friend to the show. A nice fellow, he came in, introduced himself, and said hello from NorthStar. At that point he was ready to leave. I told him he had a job, he needed to listen for a few minutes, and in his own mind, and words, let you know if Neil Young Live at Massey Hall 1971 sounded as if he was actually in a club, with Neil playing in the room.

It is his answer, and only his answer which is the truth.

Thank you again. This is a fabulous hobby, with new friends emerging with every key stroke.

Billy
