Acoustic Lens Articles

I bought my copy from lean business, the price is actually a bit less than normal for such a specialised book of such a large size. I am enjoying the unique style which is far less dry than most text books. So far my only disappointment has been the treatment of acoustic lenses which seems a bit brief and doesn't seem to take into account this data:
http://www.jblpro.com/pub/obsolete/Acoustic_Lens_Family1.pdf
which does show constant directivity behaviour

With the emergence of 3-D printing, this technology needs to be revisited. WHG

Disagree

Hi Bill,

Publishing this book, or its physical design, are not business decisions. One of the reasons we went for self publishing is that we wanted the book to be the way we envisioned it, with the content we wanted to include. Physically we wanted it to be more along the lines of the old classics than the modern style.

But self publishing also means you don't have the marketing force of a publisher, nor the contacts. And when you spend essentially every waking hour February-August finishing the contents, and find sales and marketing slightly less interesting than washing up, there isn't much time or energy left to make a massive effort to get the book into every possible relevant bookshop. Also after finishing a massive creative project like this, you just want to do something completely unrelated afterwards.

AES and ASA: we have checked.
AES sell only their own publications, except at conventions. We sold books at AES NY and will also have it in their book shop for the convention in Vienna next year.

ASA seems to only sell their own stuff, and books regarded as classics. A new book isn't a classic.

eBay? I don't want to go to the post office with a ton of books every other day. And shipping would be more expensive.

If you have any actual contacts that can help us get the book into other bookshops, please PM me. We're happy to sell through other channels, but we haven't had much luck so far.

This all sounds like the complaints of typical client who needs help, but is inclined to kill the messenger instead. This whole message here is nothing more than an outline of the "business decisions" that were made. Book presence in a bookstore is not were the action is. I am certain that orders placed from a dedicated website could be implemented in a cost effective manner. You only ship once every two weeks, not "every other day"; and where possible, consolidate shipments by destination country. An employee could be hired to do this on a part-time or commission basis. It seems to me that the main challenge is how to make more people and institutions aware that the Horn Book actually exists, and that it is well worth the purchase price. The current distribution arrangement with Lean Business Audio appears to be working just fine. I see from the Horn Book website Home that the authors have decided to discontinue selling through Amazon, which is a very sensible move given the exceedingly poor service they have been receiving from the company.

Sorry David, here I go again with a new idea...

Since one of the multi-entry challenge is often about not adding too much resonnance from entry port, it would be magical if it should be possible to add stuffing at this precise segment (entry port). It would allow to use bigger front chamber for ME1/ME2 that would compensate for loose in low frequency doing a kind of aperiodic 4th order bandpass, since it would be damped. I feel it's a really interesting idea. Do it make sense ?
I've always had lot of idea for christmas list...

Hi Damien,

I will have a look when I get a chance, but I suspect that it may require just too much work to implement.

Besides, you have already received your Hornresp Christmas present for this year... :).

Kind regards,

David

Well there are a lot of people that frequent these pages. And many of those people are in the business of making horns and loudspeakers for a living. A good word to acquaintances would not be a bad idea. It would be terrible if the book had to go into a second printing ;)

Bjørn, um wow.

I know you talked to me about the book you were doing back at the beginning of the year, and looking back you even said it would be a "1000 page volume on horn loudspeakers," but it really did not hit home until I finally noticed that it was out today.

Looking at the table of contents on the website is humbling. The time and dedication needed to compile that amount of information into a cohesive whole is unreal.

Glad to see you finally have it out there.

David McBean, I really love to see you still tweaking your baby year after year.

I really need to find my white rabbit...

I recieved my copy of "High quality Horn Loudspeaker systems" last week.
Alas, the packaging was also torn-up to an extent that even the danish "postvæsen" had left a remark that I should check the content and respond asap !
The book is useable, however, but not mint as you would like for a 1200DKK purchase. Thus, it seems a good decision to let Amazon go.

But excellent work, Björn and Thomas !
Good reading for the X-mas holidays indeed, pretending one understand some !
Turns out that I have copies of many of the references in the "historical section", and I remember John gave mention of you last time we visited them in Heathfield, UK.

Hi Damien,

Thanks for reporting this bug - another thing I overlooked, it seems :). The throat adaptor is included in the loudspeaker wizard schematic, but not the main diagram. It will be fixed in the next release.

Also in the next update will the absorbent filling Christmas present you asked for recently :). The existing Fr parameter will be "multi-tasked" to remove the need for the user interface to be modified. This reduces the implementation work required to a much more acceptable level.

Kind regards,

David

Hornresp Update 5050-191206

Hi Everyone,

BUG FIX 1

Trying to export horn data from the schematic diagram of a direct radiator loudspeaker would generate a fatal run-time overflow error. To prevent this the export horn data menu command is now disabled for direct radiator loudspeakers. Attachment 1 refers.

BUG FIX 2

A throat adaptor specified using the Ap1 and Lp labels was not being included in the main schematic diagram. This bug has now been fixed. Attachments 2 (before) and 3 (after) refer. My thanks to Damien ('papasteack') for reporting this problem.

CHANGE 1

The semi-inductance model free inductance parameter Leb can now have a zero value. Attachment 4 refers.

CHANGE 2

Absorbent filling material can now be specified in the ME1 or ME2 throat port tube of a multiple entry horn loudspeaker by setting the Fr parameter to the airflow resistivity value, and the Tal parameter to zero. Attachment 5 refers.

Kind regards,

David

Wow ! This one was fast !
Can you verify ME response, i got a strange result with added filling. Adding a lot of filing at ME1 port, i got the red response for ME1 driver compared to the original green one. 125/130db, this is a lot of boost adding filling ^^

Effect on "Nd driver" response is really nice to see !!!

Here the Nd, Me1, Me2 files if you want to play :)

This year santa-david came really early:santa2:

Thank you, David. This program is completely ridiculous in the finest of ways! It gives me great joy on a regular basis to "discover" things when I accidentally double click something :) And yeah, I know, stuff is in the help section, but I swear these things manifest just like easter eggs. It is just so much fun to use this thing whenever life permits that keeping up is a side hobby off of a tangent off of an avocation. THANK YOU!

Hi Damien,

Thanks for the feedback. I have identified the problem, and will try to release an update tomorrow (Sunday). I have noticed a couple of other minor "loose ends" that need to be tidied-up at the same time. The response for your test example should have been as shown in the attachment :).

Kind regards,

David
